NEWS FROM ST. PETER SCHOOL

On the weekend of June 23-24, the Archdiocese of Wash-ington will take up the Peter’s Pence second collection. Gifts to this annual collection help the Holy Father sup-port victims of war, oppression, natural disasters, and oth-ers most in need of assistance. In responding to those who are suffering, Our Lord teaches us, “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). Our participation in this collection gives us an opportunity to be a witness of Our Lord’s love and mercy for the vulnerable and suffering around the world. Please give generously as you are able.

Steps to Caring for Creation: See, Act, Judge

“Begin with a story,” advised Lonnie Ellis as he opened his talk about climate change, held at St. Peter’s on May 18. And make the story a personal one—not about some-thing remote, like disappearing polar bears, but about something that shows how cli-mate change affects people you know and love. Following his own advice, he told a story about seeing mosquitoes in the Himalayas: formerly unknown at that elevation, the insects now flourish there and can carry malaria to his Indian friends, who have no resistance to this deadly disease.

Ellis, a secular Franciscan, is the founder of In Solidarity, a nonprofit firm that serves the Catholic Church’s commitment to the poor and marginalized. Formerly, as the associate director of the Catholic Climate Covenant, he worked with the U.S. bishops to introduce Laudato Si, Pope Francis’s 2015 “ecological encyclical,” to the United States. Ellis devoted most of his talk to presenting its three key stages in addressing climate change:

See: Understand how climate change is hurting people and God’s creation. The

fires, floods, and expanding sites for illnesses we hear about almost daily are not ran-dom occurrences but the result of changes in our climate. These changes are having disastrous effects on people in the United States and far away.

Judge: Recognize that personal and policy decisions made for decades have affected

the environment and accept that each of us has a responsibility to deal with their ef-fects. The encyclical, echoing warnings from three other popes over forty years, ad-monishes us to “care for this world in which we live.”

Act: Take steps to live simpler but fuller lives undergirded by spiritual values that encourage us to recognize God in all things. The encyclical invites us to “regain the conviction that we need one another, that we have a shared responsibility for others and the world, and that being good and decent are worth it.”

Perhaps one way to accept that invitation is to download Laudato Si at laudatosi.com

"No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends."

Christians are no strangers to sacrifice. Jesus lays down his life for our redemption, martyrs remain faithful to the end, and every believer faces "deaths" in the spiritual life when love requires a re-ordering of preference and prior-ity. On Memorial Day, we honor those who laid down their lives for their nation and for the values we espouse - freedom, justice, and a bet-ter world for our children. In a day that often fills with barbeques and boat launches, remem-ber to take some time in prayer! Intercede for those who have died and for the loved ones they left behind, and pray for peace on earth.
