Pre-commissioning

• When practical, components were tested before installation

– RFQ first operated with helium beam in Test-EBIS

– Superconducting Solenoid tested when received

– Major components validated in Test-EBIS

• Large supplies tested after installation ,e.g., collector supply

• Beam tuning and characterization (prior to injection into Booster) is following plan developed by D. Raparia and J. Alessi (Start-up Plan, January 2009)

Design of components

• Test EBIS – operated for ~10 years at BNL; most features and designs were copied from this prototype

• RFQ, Linac and bunchers – many similar devices operating throughout the world; C-AD has previous experience operating all these type devices

• Many commercial components (most power supplies).

• DOE CD-1, CD-2, CD-3 technical review process; EIR, etc.

Overall Schedule

• Prior to commissioning, sequential beam measurements are being made after each major element is installed: EBIS source, injection line, LEBT,RFQ,MEBT, and LINAC– Measured parameters are compared with calculations

• After ARR approval, begin commissioning with helium ions, then use gold and iron (commissioning = capture and acceleration of EBIS beam in Booster)

• If possible, try delivering helium to NSRL in June • CD-4 - by end of September (doesn’t require beam injection into

Booster)• Fall NSRL run - will use EBIS for some ions  • 2011 RHIC run – EBIS phased in as injector for heavy ions;

some time with U beam might be scheduled

Prior to commissioning

• All ARR prestart items complete

• Critical devices, beam-current monitors and reach-backs for radiation protection are established

• Emergency procedures are complete (done)

• Commissioning procedures are complete

• Fault Study Plan (done)

• Safety Check-Off List(s) prepared (RSC – D. Beavis; ASSRC – J. Glenn)

• Safety Review Committee issues closed out

• Accelerator Safety Envelope is approved (done)

• Training of commissioning staff is complete

Coordination With Operations

• Commissioning steps for beam in Booster planned with Booster Liaison Physicist (C. Gardner) and MCR Head (P. Ingrassia)

• Unattended operation of components, such as EBIS superconducting solenoid, monitored by Accelerator Support Group (CAS) which is staffed 24/7

• Training on required procedures done by EBIS staff

• Conduct of Operations Procedures are followed

• Project Head participates in weekly Accelerator Division meetings

Injection into Booster

• Establish oscilliscope traces of ETB beam pulse, Booster main magnet current, and injection dipole currents.

• Adjust timing of beam pulse so that it occurs on the injection porch.• Adjust Booster magnetic cycle to obtain desired measured field on

injection porch.• Adjust timing of injection dipoles so that dipole current falls rapidly to

zero at end of beam pulse.• Establish beam on ETB xfmrs and mws.• Adjust ETB dipoles and quads to obtain desired beam positions and

widths on the mws. • Adjust ETB dipoles and quads, inflector voltage, and Booster injection

field to obtain circulating beam in Booster.• Setup adiabatic capture and acceleration.• See K.L. Zeno’s procedure and notes for details.

Training and Qualifications

• EBIS is operated and commissioned by system specialists

• Experience required for commissioning was gained from construction and operation of Test EBIS, operation of the H- RFQ and linac, and operation of the Tandems.

• Radiation safety experience from similar ions and intensities at the Tandem

• Major Systems (RF, power supplies, vacuum, etc) done by experienced C-AD staff who are responsible for similar systems throughout C-AD

• Large power supplies and RF systems initially tested at vendor facilities with participation of EBIS system expert

Page 12: May 4, 2010 EBIS ARR Jim Alessi May 4- 7, 2010 Pre-commissioning and Commissioning

May 4, 2010

• Procedures have been developed to protect workers from hazards during an emergency or routine operations.

– Some (emergency, Booster injection) are maintained in the C-AD OPM, chapters 3 and 15.

– Other procedures have been developed for the system specialists to aid in the operation of equipment and are not in the OPM. These will be put into the OPM as appropriate prior to the transition from commissioning to operations.

(Covered in D. Passarello talk)

Operating mode during commissioning

• Starting in June, will begin to operate continuously for significant periods of time with coverage by EBIS experts in cooperation with MCR

• For the NSRL fall run - will use EBIS for some beams, while still in the commissioning mode.

• Will be able to switch between Tandem and EBIS injection to insure continuity of Operations

• During FY11, EBIS will be phased in to become the injector of choice for heavy ions – this may include some U beam for RHIC

• During 2011 will gradually eliminate 24/7 expert shift coverage
