It is becoming clear that even the highest standards of construction that are regularly being implemented today are simply not enough to achieve Net Zero Energy construction. As such, there are not any clear and simple guidelines to follow when considering designing building envelopes or buildings in general to meet this important target. Zero Energy design is an extremely complex task, fraught with the benefits that can only be gained by working with synergies and climate responsive strategies.

The four basic steps that are required to begin to design a building to meet a zero carbon target for operating energy, in order of importance are:1.       Reduce loads / demands first (bioclimatic design, orientation, passive solar design, daylighting, shading, orientation, use of natural ventilation, site design and materiality)2.       Meet load efficiently and effectively (energy efficient / effective lighting, high-efficiency / effective mechanical, electrical and plumbing equipment, controls, etc)3.       Use on-site generation / renewables to meet energy needs (doing the above steps before will result in the need for much smaller renewable energy systems, making carbon neutrality achievable)4.       Use purchased offsets as a last resort when all other means have been looked at on site

This presentation will:• Focus on the climate responsive architectural strategies that are essential to impacting load

reduction - i.e. passive design• Examine envelope design and detailing strategies that work with passive design to further

reduce the energy requirements• Speak to the divide in concern between operating energy and embodied energy as it impacts

the low carbon design target in building

Summer Student Internships

The internships provide students approaching their final year in undergraduate or graduate architectural education at the University of Manitoba an opportunity to experience architectural practice and make the connection between content learnt in school with the reality of practice.

It is an opportunity for the professional community to further architectural education and knowledge of the profession in Manitoba, while making contacts with students who might become valued employees in future years.

In the program, students can gain an elective credit for spending at least three months working for a practice, while the practice will employ the student in the normal way, along with ensuring that the student comes in contact with a reasonable range of professional activities.

The practices will make sure that the student is engaged in a range of work that gives the student exposure to key elements of architectural practice and are exposed to other elements that they may not have the experience or expertise to participate in, but are able to observe such as contract or client meetings. The practice will appoint a supervisor (not necessarily the student’s line manager) who will make sure that the student under their supervision gets a balanced range of experience beyond the most productive employment of that student by the office. The practice will take a greater interest in the educational value of the student’s internship than they might when employing a student under normal circumstances. The supervisor will make sure the student intern will be exposed to:

Production drawingsProduction informationMeetings with consultants related to the project they are working onInternal project meetings and reviews

The supervisor will communicate (most likely by ‘phone) with a Prof. from the University before the student starts and at the end of the internship. The student will collect examples of the items they work on for a portfolio documenting their experience in the practice. The work in the portfolio will be confidential, to be seen by the supervising Prof. from the University, an appeal committee in extreme circumstances, and on occasions, the visiting board from the CCAB.

What should a practice do if they want to participate in the program?

Professional Development Workshop Offering From Ethics to Ethos, Inter-Professionally

Ethos-Making: Meshing the Personal, the Professional and the Spiritual [An Experiential Workshop: Evolving Professionalism Beyond the Status Quo]

Ian Wight PhD MCIP, Associate Professor, City Planning

Faculty of Architecture, University of Manitoba What will be our lasting legacy as professionals? How can we better negotiate the institutional and corporate landscapes we live and work in? Can you position your ‘professing’ essentially as ethical inquiry in action? In this experiential workshop you will engage in an inquiry – around ethics and ethos - exploring, with fellow professionals, where your professionalism is grounded and how it is evolving - or might evolve, and what we might share in common – in the form of an ethos. In this particular workshop, one in a series considering the evolution of professionalism beyond the status quo, we will explore the space between our individual professions, and our role there as an ‘inter-professional’, operating beyond our normal solo/silo professional confines. This will also involve considering what it means to bring our whole selves to this work, effectively meshing the personal, the professional and the spiritual. This call, for expressions of interest in participating in this workshop, is particularly directed to members of professions involved with the built/engineered environment, including engineers, architects, designers, planners and other development professionals - especially in areas such as green building. The workshop will be capped at 20 persons on this occasion, but may be repeated later in the year depending on interest expressed. Much of the work will be in small groups of four, each group being comprised of individuals from different professions. It is expected that participants will have some enthusiasm for exploring inter-professional terrain in novel ways. We’ll address 'the pillars' of your professionalism, the 'bridging' challenges (especially as regards inter-professional relationships), and 'over-arching' ethical imperatives. The work we do together will be framed as ‘ethos-making’, beyond codified ethics (although we will look over our shoulders at our respective ‘official’ professional codes of ethics, or statements of values). More than mere dutiful referencing of these codes, the workshop will effectively involve attempting to mesh our personal, professional and spiritual selves – aiming for an ethos that we enact, always, as a matter of course.

Page 11: May 6, 2011 INFORMATION MAA E-Bulletin May 06_11.pdf1 award to an engineer (or engineering firm) for innovation in wood structures. 1 award to a designer that exemplifies the aesthetic

In particular, we’ll work through some recent proposals by Parker Palmer, on ‘re-educating the new professional’, translating his ideas into our professional contexts. A related reference article can be accessed at: http://www.changemag.org/Archives/author-lp/Parker-Palmer.html He offers five 'immodest proposals' that professions like ours will want to consider as a response to these challenging times. Do his proposals resonate, and how might we want our home professions to respond? How will we respond, individually and collectively? Part of Palmer’s message involves rejoining 'soul and role'; it also entails 'prospecting a new professionalism'. Are you up for this kind of action inquiry? If time and interest permits, the presentation will also offer some possible lines of response, including a combination of: interweaving (of single-, double- and triple-loop learning), presencing (to help us – literally - get to the heart, and soul, of our work) and meshworking (much more than mere networking, but including interweaving and overstanding). Potential integrative perspectives to be explored together include well-being (which includes, but transcends, happiness) and place-making (involving the integration of physicality, functionality, community and spirituality – a form of truly integral practice). We can work on them, based on our own experiences, with a view to seeing what we can further co-create together, as emerging inter-professionals. Facilitator: Ian Wight PhD MCIP is an Associate Professor of City Planning at the University of Manitoba. His current research focuses on ‘evolving professionalism – beyond the status quo’, with a particular interest in ‘educating the agents of the next enlightenment’. This workshop design is now in its third iteration after successful offerings to professional planners in the US (Vancouver WA) and Canada (Winnipeg MB). This will be the first time it has involved professionals from a range of different professions, all involved with the built/engineered environment. Registration: A limited number of places are available, at no charge, for interested practicing professionals, on a first-come, first-served basis – but recognizing the need for a mix of participants from a range of professions. Register your interest with Ian Wight [email protected] as soon as possible, and no later than May 16, 2011.

The objective of this seminar is to expose the true nature and associated costs of

change orders and help project managers, engineers, architects and owners fully

appreciate the detrimental impact of change orders and streamline the process

with professional and consistent documentation to support the price.

Change orders cause disruption and nasty side effects for all parties involved in

the project and if not properly managed they will cause staggering cost

escalation, delays and possible litigation.

The agenda will include: exploring the true nature of change orders; assessing

the nasty side effects of change orders; understanding owners’ and engineer’s

points of view and concerns; assessing the direct, indirect and consequential

costs; proven process to document all reasonable charges; preparing

professional, detailed and consistent proposals; responding to owners’ needs and

requests; process to minimize the number of changes; mitigating costs and

retaining credibility and strong relationships.
