Edition 283 — Friday 26 April 2019
From Mr Trent Citrano, Head of School This Thursday marked another milestone for MIS as, for the first time ever, we hosted the 2019 Sakura Book Bowl. But what is the Sakura Book Bowl? The international school librarians from all over Japan, choose the very best new children’s books for the year and challenge students in their schools to read as many of them as they
can. At the Sakura Medal Book Bowl, teams of students from these international schools come together to compete in a quiz
format to determine which team has the greatest comprehension of the book selections. It was a real pleasure for us to host this event this year and to admire how well all of the students recalled the key themes and messages of these wonderful new pieces of children’s literature. Their preparation, collaboration and teamwork was commendable. I would like to extend a special thanks to our MIS Librarian, Mr Brian Hall for his work in making this event such a success!

From Mr Anthony Hall, Deputy Head of School Greetings from MIS. The final week before our Golden Week holiday has been one filled with much activity and plenty of highlights to celebrate. Monday’s as-sembly was a special occasion in the school year as it was used to hold the elec-tions for this year’s Student Council Representatives. Two students from each class would have spent last weekend composing and practicing their speeches and on the day they were all well-prepared for their big moment in the spotlight. Each candidate had their turn at the lectern and delivered the speech that they felt would win over the hearts and minds of their electorate. The audience listened attentively to every candidate. After each grade pair finished their turn, it was
heads down from the audience as they marked their choice onto their voting sheet.
The votes were counted and the news of who had been elected
was shared in Friday’s assembly to great applause. Commisera-
tions go to the candidates who were not selected. They have done
themselves proud to be selected for the final two in their class and
will make excellent vice-councillors. Congratulations go to the
elected Student Council Representatives. I wholeheartedly look
forward to supporting them in their endeavours to improve their
school and support the wider community this year. I am sure they
will do everybody who voted for them proud.

Bringing Learning Outdoors Spring brings so much joy to the outdoor learning environment. The Koinobori flies high and moves softly in the wind as the children gaze up, in amazement, at the beauty it brings to the garden. Butterflies, ladybirds and caterpillars can be found in the plants. This week the children have participated in picnics and decorating trees with colourful eggs.
As the sun gets warmer, we do suggest each child brings a hat to school to wear during outside
play and learning experiences. This promotes positive self-help skills and knowledge of how to
keep ourselves safe in the sun.

Grade 4 Take Science to the Garden
G4 have been investigating the parts of a flower for science. They took advantage of the lovely spring weather, and
our flowering gardens at MIS, to draw detailed diagrams, use microscopes, and practice their art skills as well!

G1 Thrilled by JEF United Captain (and MIS Dad) We are fortunate to have a strong connection with local soccer team JEF United. This week, JEF United Captain (and MIS
father of two MIS students) Mr Sato wowed our students with his incredible footwork. Mr Sato led our students in a num-
ber of warm up and teambuilding exercises, then the children even got to play with him in a real soccer game. At the
end, G1 asked many excellent questions of Mr Sato. Overall, our students had a wonderful experience!

Beans, Pods & Seeds, Oh My! The student in Grade 2 have been learning all about beans, pods and seeds - what they are composed of and how
they sprout and grow. You can see from the photos below that they used magnifying glasses and dissected beans in
class then when on a seed and pod hunt outside in the MIS Gardens. We can’t wait to see these grow!

For Grade 5, It’s About Baseball & Beauty
As part of their studies of capturing movement in Art, the students in G5 spent a day outside of the school. First, they went to the historic, beautiful Japanese gardens of Mihama-en where they were able to examine the movement of water, leaves and other items in nature. Next, they headed off to Zozo Marine Stadium to catch a Chiba Lotte Ma-rines baseball game where they could examine (and later illustrate) the movements of the players in action. What a fun way to learn! The children reported that they had a wonderful day. Can’t wait to see their illustrations!
