Each one has a unique story, but each chose TOS as their spiritual home along many others in the last two years. Last month, at a lovely new member reception hosted by John and Beth Gamel, I had the opportunity to bring some of them together and welcome them formally. As we draw these wonderful people into synagogue life, they are already bringing blessings into our community. Please join me in extending a prolonged and warm welcome to the newest members of the TOS family. Get to know them and invite them into your home! For my part, one of my delights as your rabbi is the opportunity to get to know you and for us to become important parts of each other’s lives. To that end I invite you, if you haven’t already, to come by for a cup of coffee or tea, whether it is to discuss a serious personal issue or simply to schmooze. May the spring bring us all new life, personal growth and renewal! I hope all of us had a joyous and meaningful Passover, and that “Dayeinu,” is still echoing in our ears. “Dayeinu,” after all, is more than a catchy tune. It represents an attitude for living Jewishly. Especially in an age that prizes perfection and continually urges us to want more and do more, “Dayeinu” teaches us the spiritual values of feeling satisfaction with what we have achieved already. It instructs us to count the blessings with which we have already been bestowed. It helps us to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. And what would life be like without the “Dayeinu” approach? Consider that as the Israelites marched out of Egypt and into the wilderness, the greatest threat they faced wasn’t Amalek or Pharaoh, or even starvation or drought. The biggest threat they faced was of becoming wanting, demanding, and overcome by a sense of the grass being greener. For this they brought on themselves many a disaster. In the end their dissatisfaction exacted a heavy price. Only the new generation, the one born after the Exodus, would enter the Promised Land; and only their descendants would come to experience the meaning and satisfaction of “Dayeinu—It would have been enough!” With this in mind, particularly in this season of our joy, I invite us all to take stock not of our many wants, challenges, and shortcomings, but of our many blessings as a synagogue community. We are blessed with wonderful, caring congregants. We are blessed with a talented and dedicated staff. We are blessed with a magnificent facility which is being renewed, expanded and modernized. We are blessed with a growing and thriving preschool and a religious school that is working hard to engage our kids and families in a 21 st century context. We are blessed with engaging adult learning which now includes Torah Study, Adult b’nei mitzvah, and weekly Introduction to Judaism classes (now with upwards of 35 students!). And we are blessed with more worship opportunities—on weekdays and Shabbat, on holidays and festivals, at Hebrew school and preschool and beyond—than probably any other Reform synagogue in the entire country is. We are also blessed by the many people who in the last several months have chosen to join our Temple community. Every night at bedtime, my children sing the Sh’ma. They sing in lovely, little girl voices, the “traditional” melody composed by Solomon Sulzer in mid-nineteenth century Vienna. But my daughter, Sonya, has taken to singing the Sh’ma twice each night. She sings it first, as she has learned it, with her best possible Hebrew. And then she sings it her way. Sometimes she changes the words or tune. Sometimes she echoes each word as she sings (“sh’ma-ma-ma-ma Yisrael-el-el-el…). In short, she has a great time while singing

the Sh’ma.

That a five-year-old has a great time performing a millennia old Jewish ritual every night is no small statement. It says a great deal about her, our family, our Jewish community (both Temple Ohabei Shalom and the JCC) and the future of our people. And it exemplifies my ideals as a cantor and as a Jewish leader, and the ideals of our synagogue and education programs. Judaism has wonderful traditions, but in order to create a vibrant, relevant Jewish experience, we need to embrace both our traditions and our unique, modern sensibilities. Here are a few upcoming events that exemplify this approach and the joy and fulfillment that the participants display:

Temple Ohabei Shalom’s Annual

Friday, May 21, 7:30 PM

Honoring our beloved member, Spencer Gould

Come hear 40 voices united in song as our guests, the Boston Community Choir (a.k.a. The Boston Pops Gospel Choir), joins our own Temple Ohabei Shalom Choir for this energetic and moving service. Invite your friends and neighbors to join us for this highlight of our music and worship calendar. Please note the later start time for this special Erev Shabbat service. This is a night not to be missed! A festive Oneg will follow services. A Congregational Dinner will precede the service at 6:30pm (RSVP required).

• On April 30th, our Judaism in Motion service will be enhanced by the participation of all of our ARS students and teachers for our Teacher Appreciation Service.

• On May 18th, we celebrate the festival of Shavuot and the Confirmation of our tenth grade students.

• On May 21st we sing and dance on Gospel Shabbat as the TOS Choir joins together with the Boston Community Choir for a moving Shabbat experience for all.

• On June 5th, Six adult women will lead us in Shabbat services as they become B’not Mitzvah. I think it is fair to say that this year and a half long journey has been transformative, captivating, and fun for all.

None of the above would matter at all if the participants didn’t feel a similar connection as Sonya does. As Reform Jews in particular, we cannot participate for purely traditional reasons. Our Jewish connection succeeds only when we are engaged and inspired as individuals. So come, join in and lend your unique voice to our communal Sh’ma. L’shalom,

Great Opportunity!

Seize the opportunity to participate in a unique tradition at Ohabei Shalom. Openings are available for new worship leaders. Training will be provided. Hebrew reading skills are not a requirement. To find out more call: Ita N. Wiener at 617-734-7137 or Spencer Gould at 781-329-7439. We look forward to seeing you at services!

May 1, 2010 • 17 Iyyar 5770 Parsha Emor

For my Bat Mitzvah project, I have chosen to serve dinner every other Thursday at Hebrew Senior Life in Brookline. I love participating in this because I can offer kindness to people who may be lonely. I do this with a few of my friends and it is rewarding and fun to be together helping people in our own community. I also will donate some of my Bat Mitzvah money to the Animal Rescue League. I love animals and have been a vegetarian for four years. I look forward to volunteering there when I turn sixteen.

May 8, 2010 • 24 Iyyar 5770 Parshat Behar-Bechukotai For my Bat Mitzvah project I have been working to assist people suffering from cancer, especially brain tumors. This is of special importance to me as my grandmother Helen died of a brain tumor. At Chanukah I began this project. Rather than exchanging gifts, I asked members of my family to make donations to the Brain Tumor Foundation. After my Bat Mitzvah, I wil l be riding in the Children’s Pan Mass challenge. This bicycle mini-marathon fundraiser will help raise money to provide support for cancer research and to help in the care and treatment of cancer patients.

Isabel Schulman Daughter of Wendy Wolf and Andy Schulman

May 15, 2010 • 2 Sivan 5770 Parshat Bamidbar

For her Mitzvah Project, Isabel chose to support Grassroot Soccer (GRS). GRS trains African soccer stars, coaches, teachers, and peer educators in the world’s most HIV-affected countries to deliver an interactive HIV prevention and life skills curriculum to youth. This organization uses the power of soccer in the fight against HIV and AIDS. As an avid and competitive soccer player since kindergarten, Isabel is excited and honored to support this vital cause. To learn more about GRS, visit their website: www.grassrootsoccer.org. Emmett Howard Gordon Son of Christina and Michael Gordon

May 22, 2010 • 9 Sivan 5770 Parsha Naso

Emmett's Mitzvah Project is related to his personal interest in The Special Olympics of Massachusetts (SOMA). Emmett will be volunteering at the State Soccer Tournament in Byfield, Massachusetts in October. Soccer is one of the most popular sports for Special Olympics athletes and it contains the youngest age bracket of athletes in all Special Olympic events, so this is a natural fit for Emmett. SOMA hosts 115 teams at the State Soccer Tournament, so they are very grateful to have Emmett on board as a volunteer. In addition, on Emmett's Bar Mitzvah invitation, he requested that his guests make a donation in his honor to SOMA instead of receiving traditional gifts.
