May Flowers...
Mission Statement: At Clifton Public School all members of our Learning Community (students, staff and parents) will
work together in a safe and caring environment to achieve their personal best (academically, socially, and emotionally).
Thank you to those who joined us for our Education Week Open House.
Students worked very hard to showcase the Peel Character Attributes
(Responsibile, Inclusive, Cooperative, Caring, Honest, Respectful). We
had many wonderful activities for our students including bracelet making,
book fair, yard clean up and dramatic performances. We finished our
week with an ACE assembly and we presented Mrs. Piotrowski, our Office
Manager, with an Award of Distinction for all her hard work in the office
and around the school.
May brings EQAO for our grade 3 students and our grade 5 students
will be starting to talk about their transition to middle school. Staff
start reflecting on Term 2 and begin writing report cards. With the con-
struction nearly finished, we will start planning for the big move at the
end of the school year. The improved weather also brings an added en-
ergy to the school and the students are much more active during their
recess times. Although the school year is winding down, it is a great time
to remind your son/daughter that there is still plenty of learning left.
They need to stay on track and do their very best right through May and
June!

School Council
The School Council will be hold-
ing a parent presentation on
May 10th with a guest speaker.
The speaker is Ron Morrish and
he will be speaking about the
Secrets of Discipline. The
presentation will be in the li-
brary from 6:30—8:00pm. Baby
sitting will be provided.
Kindergarten PIE (Parent Involvement in Education)
Preparing for Kindergarten PIE (Parents in Education) started on April 12th and will run every Thursday for 8 weeks from 11:25am - 12:25pm.
During the time together, adults and children listen to stories, partici-
pate in a variety of types of play and socialize with their new friends.
Parents learn about the 12 different kinds of play and get a good under-
standing of the various literacy and numeracy activities that occur in a
Kindergarten class. These sessions are a great way for students to see
the school, meet some staff members, and meet new friends which will
help with their transition to the Full Day Early Learning Kindergarten
program in September.
Families with children 4 years old and under (as well as younger broth-
ers or sisters) are invited to join us at Clifton for the PIE program.
Please call the office at 905-277-2611 to register.
Education Week 2012
Clifton celebrated Education Week from April 23—27. During the week there were many great activities
planned for our students. We had a kick off assembly to present the theme of the week “Clifton Has Char-
acter”. Students made bracelets highlighting the important character attributes we focussed on for the
week. The Book Fair started as eager students created wish lists and purchased books throughout the
week. On Wednesday, students cleaned up the school yard and our Junior students cleaned up a local park.
Students in grades 3, 4 , and 5 watched “Music Travels the World”, a wonderful performance showcasing
Latin American music. Mrs. Menzies was a story teller and told stories to our kindergarten and primary classes. On Thursday, students participated in Book Attack. On a signal from the office, students read a
book for 10 minutes. If the students read a particular genre of book or a book by a specific author, they
received a prize. We also opened the classrooms for our Open House and families participated in a scaven-
ger hunt to see the character attributes that the different grade levels worked on. On Friday, students
from Munden Park Public School joined our grade 3, 4, and 5 students to watch a French performance of
Cinderella. We closed Education Week with an ACE assembly, a performance by our Primary Choir, and skits
by our Grade 5 students around Responsibility.
We would like to congratulate Mrs. Piotrowski, our Office Manager, for receiving the Award of Distinc-
tion. This award recognizes a staff member at the school who goes above and beyond for our students,
staff and community. Congratulations Mrs. Piotrowski!!!

Staff vs. Student Basketball
The Clifton teachers had their hands full as they challenged the Clifton basketball
team to a game at lunch. It was close, with the teachers winning by only one bas-
ket. Thanks to Mrs. Currie for coaching the team and organizing the game!

Keep your child safe on the Internet
Even without trying, children can come across materials on the internet that are ob-
scene, violent, hate-filled, racist or offensive in other ways.
Here are some steps to help you ensure that your children use the internet as safely as
possible:
• keep the computer in a common area of the home like the kitchen or family room
• discuss the meaning of an ‘unsafe’ site with your children
• explain to your children what they should do if they reach an unsafe site
• make exploring new websites a family activity
• pay attention to the games your children may download or copy
It's important to review safety tips with children regularly. It is possible for children
to meet unsafe strangers on the internet. Ensure your child knows the following rules:
• never give out personal information
• never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet online
• never use bad language or send mean messages
• never respond to e-mail messages that make them feel confused or uncomfortable
• tell an adult immediately if something on the internet makes them feel uncomfort-
able
