Education Week 2012

Clifton celebrated Education Week from April 23—27. During the week there were many great activities

planned for our students. We had a kick off assembly to present the theme of the week “Clifton Has Char-

acter”. Students made bracelets highlighting the important character attributes we focussed on for the

week. The Book Fair started as eager students created wish lists and purchased books throughout the

week. On Wednesday, students cleaned up the school yard and our Junior students cleaned up a local park.

Students in grades 3, 4 , and 5 watched “Music Travels the World”, a wonderful performance showcasing

Latin American music. Mrs. Menzies was a story teller and told stories to our kindergarten and primary classes. On Thursday, students participated in Book Attack. On a signal from the office, students read a

book for 10 minutes. If the students read a particular genre of book or a book by a specific author, they

received a prize. We also opened the classrooms for our Open House and families participated in a scaven-

ger hunt to see the character attributes that the different grade levels worked on. On Friday, students

from Munden Park Public School joined our grade 3, 4, and 5 students to watch a French performance of

Cinderella. We closed Education Week with an ACE assembly, a performance by our Primary Choir, and skits

by our Grade 5 students around Responsibility.

We would like to congratulate Mrs. Piotrowski, our Office Manager, for receiving the Award of Distinc-

tion. This award recognizes a staff member at the school who goes above and beyond for our students,

staff and community. Congratulations Mrs. Piotrowski!!!

Staff vs. Student Basketball

The Clifton teachers had their hands full as they challenged the Clifton basketball

team to a game at lunch. It was close, with the teachers winning by only one bas-

ket. Thanks to Mrs. Currie for coaching the team and organizing the game!

Keep your child safe on the Internet

Even without trying, children can come across materials on the internet that are ob-

scene, violent, hate-filled, racist or offensive in other ways.

Here are some steps to help you ensure that your children use the internet as safely as

possible:

• keep the computer in a common area of the home like the kitchen or family room

• discuss the meaning of an ‘unsafe’ site with your children

• explain to your children what they should do if they reach an unsafe site

• make exploring new websites a family activity

• pay attention to the games your children may download or copy

It's important to review safety tips with children regularly. It is possible for children

to meet unsafe strangers on the internet. Ensure your child knows the following rules:

• never give out personal information

• never arrange a face-to-face meeting with someone they meet online

• never use bad language or send mean messages

• never respond to e-mail messages that make them feel confused or uncomfortable

• tell an adult immediately if something on the internet makes them feel uncomfort-

able
