THANKS •• CLEAN·UP

I want to thank the 25 people who showed up for the clean-up on Saturday before the open house and picnic. These people do a fme. fine job of cleaning and should be commended. for these seem to be the same ones who show up every time we need workers. Only about four signed the work party sheet. so I do not have their names. but you know who you are. Again. thank you. Also. though. some were out of town(1). Tho.Ie who were not there missed a good. time, and you also know who you are. We had a good. time with friends. What could be better.

Thanks for all your support Candy

FEDERATION SHOW

Are we ready {or the big show? WeIllU, yes and no. We are as ready as we can be at this poin1. The Show Committee has been working hard for a full year: and the plans are nearly complete. It will be a wonderful show with plenty of chann and many activities. It will be the belt.

We wouJd. like to stress exhibits. We hope that some of you .-e }ftparing a competitive exhibit {or the show, or wiD participate in a combined case or cases with others to Ihow the Federation and General Public what we do with rocks. If you are not familiar with exhibiting rules, there is a new rules book out with all the latest rules. information, and what to do. One copy is in the library. Ask Fern Brown to see it, and choose your category. I do not think Chat the librarian can let you take it out on your own, as there are many who wish to see it, and only one copy, as of now. However, you can look it over in the library and let Fern know what pages you would like to have duplicated. I am sure she can arrange this for you. There are some major and minor

Page 6: May Monthly Bulletin of the Mineral Gem Society 1992 of

changes, so you should see this new rules book; however, the library has several copies of older rules books with most of the format to see and then you can see the new rules book.

Then there are the commercial awards to compete for. See the information printed in the ~ issue of the Petrograph. This explains exactly what is expected of you if you wish to compete. Try your hand at iL At least read the information so that you can be prepared in the future when you do decide to compete.

Also, the Federation offers a lovely plaque for the outstanding club competitive exhibits, called Sweepstakes award. This is decided by total points. Each Society case in competition receives a certain score; and each individual case in competition receives a score. Also, non-competitive exhibits also help. We won the Sweepstakes Award in 1978, so why not win it again in 1992. After all, we are the HOSTS, aren't we?

We hope to have Society cases of cabs, intarsia, minerals, spheres, carvings, jewelry, etc. Each case must have at least five contributers; so you don't have to set up a whole case ourself. What we want now is someone to organize each case specialty. Are you willing to help?

If you need help in deciding which category to compete in, or understanding the rules, or workmanship rules, or showmanship -- ask on of our experienced exhibitors: Vern McCullough, Arnold Barron, Ednah Antunovich, Jeanette Korstad, Ron Hassemeyer, Bill Walsh, Phil Clarke, etc. Let's hear from you.

ORIENTATION CLASSES

Orientation classes are held every third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. at the shop.

MEMBER INCENTIVE

Last year the membership voted for an attendance incentive when they set up a special door prize. One hundred dollars is to be set aside with $10 per month added until there is a winner. To be eligible for this prize (just think how many things you can buy at our club show), you must be a currently paid-up member and be present at the meeting. After a winner is proclaimed, the sequence will start again. Odds are better than the state lottery, so why don't you come to our next meeting.

I had a great aunt who always said that if your "thank yous" are not prompt, they ShOLlld be profuse.

I am profusely grateful to all the new members of the Society who really jumped in and did great jobs, and to older members who undertook different jobs than they had done before.

Ther e are too many to list i ndi vi dual I y, but I w.:Jul d like to especially thank Ron Miller and Arn~' ~ Barron and their food committee; Carol Hernandez and Melinda Hopkins on a tough job well done; Ren~ Henderson for efforts above and beyond the call; ALldrey Azevedo for an inf ormati ve, entertaining demonstration room. John Gullak for doing a great job, although it was totally unfami liar to him, and to Jim Ewing and Brian Buehnerkempe for doing their usual excellent job on short notice. A special thanks to Bob and Stella Raymond for their carryi ng on under adverse conditions. My thanks to all.

There will be a wrap-up meeting and dinner on Saturday, May 16, time and place to be announced at H . .? May General Meeting.

ROCK RUMBLES II

Bring 'em back, please. To those of you who have used a piece of club equipment and brought it home

) 10 finish the work. PLEASE bring it back. Weare milling investment equipment, dop sticks. etc. Others need them now.

Thank you to those great providers of treats we often find on Saturday. Sunday and Wednesday morning. They go great with morning coffee.

Mr. Fix-it, Don Gillespi, got Doc's hand piece working again. Good thing, too, because Doc still had a few more cornucopias to finish.

Arnold Barron is using George Covell's crutches, We certainly hope George doesn't have to loan them to anyone else. George was using his cane while at the San Mateo show. Arnold has been visiting the shop in between therapy sessions,

Oet18 Stedeford will never finish her intarsia. She recently left for Pennsylvania to take care of her mother who broke her ann. She will be running a taxi service geuing her mother to therapy.

The wire wrap class has sute grown big. There is Ibardly room for the librarian the past Tucaday nights. We hope to see one of the producta at the ' auction. Jamie McDonald is the instructor. This ' eager bunch has to be pushed out the door at 9:30. 'They don't want to leave. Come by some night and (watch Pat Rigor make spiders and dragon flies.

Edna A csn't seem to get the printers ink off her hands. She's been very busy printing for the federation as well as for our club stuff. This does not include the small posters done by Ken Buschke for U8 or the large fancy posters done by Ouie. But everything else has been done by Edna. We wonder how she had time to finish cabs for her case because on Saturday she also instructs juniors.

Bill Walsh put on a program on crystals at the Berkeley Club last month. He talked so much he has had bronchitis ever since. Bill is scheduled for surgery in April. We will miss him at the shop. Doc Buschke will be putting on a program in Berkeley in May. Is bronchitis catching?

Saw man, Nonn Hodgson, has been sawing rocks for the Open House Auction. He and Ioe Hunt found a fantastic flame obsidian. Ask them about it .

The Wednesday a.m. crowd misses John Gullak. faceting instructor. Roy LeRoy continues to instruct beginners in cabbing assisted by Horace Robertson when he isn't sawing rocks or talking to school kids, or getting his name in Ray Orrick's column in the Daily Review. He had remarks concerning baseball. Ask him about it and why halfway through the column Ray referred to him as Howard. Roman is here on Monday helping beginners. And Bill Collins has taken up residence at the shop.

The Snyders are off to L.A. and Emma and Carlos Castillo are headed for Mexico by way of Texas, Hurry back. We need all of you. Elmer plnns on talking to his grandchild's class about rocks while in southern California. Bob and Mrs, Si lVa arc off to Aruba,

Open House Notes

Roman Groves and Viola turned out to be terrific shop keepers at the Open House. John Gullak and Don Giliespi almost outdid Allen Ashely, auctioneer. Nonn Hodgson bought out the jade from the tailgaten who were forced to sell under the overhang. Great to see Al Richter demonstrating his bead stringing. We are also sorry to hear about the passing of his wife.

Nancy Roach of the S,P, club brought her intarsia to show us. It will be on display at the S.P. show in August. She also went home with just what she needed •• more rocks.

Santa Rosa's pres bought a lot of equipment and rocks. He and Bob Collins looked like they'd been friends for years. They just met Sunday.

Joe Hunt was SO organized he put Adrienne Hardin to work selling while he enjoyed the refreshments inside.

By the way. it took a half hour to sweep out the water before the Open House. When, oh when. oh when is the Y going to fix the roon

The crew worked hard on Saturday to clean up the shop. With the increased usage, it's important to clean up daily. No sneaking out early hoping someone else will clean your mess. You should see Steve Corral wield a mop.

Page 10: May Monthly Bulletin of the Mineral Gem Society 1992 of

Walt Schneider's grandchUdn:n showed their grandparents bow to make gem trees.

Hey __ 10hn K finally got back from tramping all over Europe -- well, Moscow, DcJUll&lk. and Portugal. Before that be visited Tucson and parts of Arizona.

Rene Hendcnon is planning on. renting a Mayflower van to get her stuff back to Indiana. Fint it was a package rack, then a small trailer and now even the van may be too small.

FIELD TRIP NEWS

CFMS WORKING FIELD TRIP

PLACE: Wiley Well District (see Map on P.75 of Desert Gem Trails by Mary Frances Strong.) West of Sly the on 1-10, look for the Wiley Well off ramp and follow the markers.

DATE: May 22, 23, 24, and 25, 1992

WHAT TO COLLECT : Nodules from several different collecting areas within the Wiley Well area . They vary in size from small (robin's egg size) to very large (basketball size) and it depends on how hard you wan t to dig. It is not guaranteed you will find anything, but your chances are very good. I have been there a couple of times and hav e not been disappointed. Some of the nodules I have cut have been very good, and some have been fair. There is a lot of material to be found ther e . Like I said, you may have to dig for it, but that is half the fun. Some of the areas we will be looking in are dangerous because of overhangs and deep pits . Caution and common sense will have to be pract i ced.

We will be camping on the BLM area like Coon Hollow or one of the many camping areas available. Our camp will be adequately marked (more info to come later) . This will be a dry camp . There is no potable water for cooking or drinking, but there is water for cleaning up with . In the established campgrounds there are clean, pit toilets and campgrounds are clean and patrolled by BLM. We will be approximately 25 miles west of Blythe. In Blythe there are stores for supplies and for those who do not own an RV, there are motels available .

THINGS TO BRING: Eye protection. Picks and Bars. Rock Hammers , chisels. Fire Wood . Water and whatever else you desire .

We will have a Happy Hour on Saturday afternoon, the 23rd and a Potluck Dinner Saturday evening . Those of you who playa musical instrument might like to bring them so we can sing or just listen to good music.

Watch for more information on the Field Trip in the CFMS Newsletter. Any questions, please contact : Don Pomerenke, CFMS Field Trip (South) , 2344 CalleAlucema, Thousand Oaks , CA 91360. Phone : (805) 492-4276.
