2nd Semester Attendance Waiver Forms Second Semester Attendance Wavier forms will be available beginning

April 19 in the attendance center. Attendance forms will be due no later

than Monday, May 10, at 4:00 p.m.

The waiver provision was written into the policy for the sake of students who

had something beyond their control happen to prevent them from being in

attendance (e.g. a severe illness or death in the family). Vacations and ap-

pointments are scheduled activities and are within the control of the family.

Absences on days such as “senior skip day” or the Royals home opener will

not be waived. There are no circumstances under which an UNEXCUSED

absence will be waived.

All requests for an attendance waiver MUST be in writing. We request that par-

ents and students plan ahead and begin collecting documentation and turn in

waiver paperwork to the SME Office as soon as possible. All Waiver applica-

tions are due in the SME Office by Monday, May 10, at 4:00 p.m.

Submit your attendance waiver and any additional documentation to the

SME Office. All materials must be received in the SME office by

4:00 p.m. on Monday, May 10. If materials are received after this date,

the grade card will reflect an “N” for No Credit.

Visual Arts Showcase It’s time once again for the Spring Visual Arts Showcase! Please join us on

Thursday, May 13, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. to view some of the outstanding

work by the SME art students. Awards will be presented that evening at

6:00 p.m. in the Choir Room. The mediums presented will be Jewelry, Pho-

tography, Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Watercolor, Fibers, Commercial Art,

and Sculpture. The Art Foundations classes will also have a showing. The

show will be judged by independent experts from the local art community.

There will also be a Portfolio Award and a Purchase Award given. The

P.T.A. purchases one piece from the show for the school’s collection. Please

plan to take a stroll through the show and to join us for the Awards Cere-

mony! You’ll be amazed at what talented artists we have here at East!

over to next year? Whatever money is on their account the last day of school will transfer to next year even if your student changes schools within the district. Nega-tive balances will also transfer so it’s im-portant to clear those up before the end of

you will be able to apply for the pro-

gram online. It will be available at

www.smsd.org on July 19. We encourage you to use the online application process as it will speed up the approval process. If you don’t have access to a computer, you can visit the food service office and apply online there. Paper applications will still be available in our Food Service office at 6701 W. 83rd in the Broadmoor Technical Center Room 120 or at the school. Please apply before school starts so you can begin receiving your benefits the first day of school. It can take up to 10 days to proc-ess your application and you will be re-sponsible for any meals your student buys before your application is processed. Waiver of Confidentiality letters for kin-dergarteners can also be submitted online for anyone using the online application

process

Honors English Classes Attention honors English students: Hon-

ors English classes carry a summer

reading requirement. Students are re-sponsible for checking the posted signs in their English classrooms during the month of May. These signs indicate the websites which students must access in order to ob-tain information about the summer reading assignments. Detailed instructions will be posted on the indicated websites. All of the web addresses will also be posted on the counseling webpage throughout the summer.


Theatre News The Thespians will host the annual Theatre Banquet on May 7 at 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. This is an awards ceremony that celebrates student accomplishments for the year. Productions planned for the

2010-2011 theatre season will be announced at the banquet.

Congratulations to our students and teachers for the wonderful pro-ductions this past year! It has been a fantastic year as we moved back

into the newly remodeled auditorium.

Thanks to SME families for your wonderful support of the theatre

department this year!

SME Choirbooster News Congratulations to all students participating in the State Music Festi-

Spring wouldn’t be spring without the wonderful SME Spring Choir Concert on May 12, 2010. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Dan Zollars Auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.. Come hear all SME choirs perform, celebrate the choir year and honor the graduat-

ing seniors.

The SME Chamber Singers will sing at the last PTA meeting of the

New Kansas State Immunization Requirements The Kansas Department of Health and Education has notified SMSD that the immunization requirements for schools have changed. This happens from time to time as the CDC (Center for Disease Control) makes new recommenda-

tions and KS updates their state laws. The following are changes from earlier requirements.

2010-2011 School Year

� Tdap – all students entering 7th grade if at least 2 years since last Td

� Varicella – 2 doses K and 1st grade, 1 dose 2nd – 10th, (previously 9th).

� Hep B – 3 doses K – 10th (previously 9th)

Please provide copies of all immunizations or a note from your doctor that your student has had the chicken pox to the school nurse before the beginning of school in August, 2010. Students who have not received the required im-munizations will not be able to attend school until documentation is received. Library News The big spring Used Book Sale has been rescheduled to coincide with the fall SHARE garage sale on October 23. As you go through items during spring/summer cleaning, we hope you’ll consider donating any used books, DVDs and CDs to our sale. If you are a book club member or know of a reader who needs to weed their home collection, please let them know. With your help, they can purchase more great new materials and technology for our SME Library Media Center even during this time of drastic budget reductions. questions. Reuse, re-read, and recycle! Your support is appreciated!

The library could use your help in getting materials returned by the end of school. Please check with your student about overdue library materials. All books out to seniors must be returned before senior check-out sheets can be

Advanced Placement Exams—May 3-7 and May 10-14 Dates and Locations Advanced Placement Exams will be administered May 3-11 and May 10-14. Students should refer to the schedule provided by their AP teacher to verify the time and locations of their exams. All Exams will be administered at East. A list of students and the hours they are testing will be provided to the attendance office to excuse absences due to

testing.

Times Morning Exams: Report to the testing location no later than 7:25 a.m.

Afternoon Exams: Report to the testing location no later than 12:05 p.m.

Most exams will take approximately 3 hours plus break and instruction time. Plan on a minimum of 4 to 4 ½ hours total for most exams. All students are required to stay until the entire testing time has expired and all exam materials have been collected and counted. Students will not be given permission to leave before the testing time has ex-

pired.

What to Bring � Several sharpened No. 2 pencils (with erasers) for all multiple-choice answer sheets.

� Black or dark-blue ballpoint pens for free response questions.

Calculators for the Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Physics B, Physics C and Statistics exams. Students may bring up to 2 calculators but may not share them with another student. Students should refer to page 2 of the bulletin they received from their teacher for exam descriptions or at www.collegeboard.com/ap/caclulators. This describes

the types of calculators students may and may not use.

� Student’s social security number. This is not mandatory but is used for identification by College Board � A photo I.D.

� Physics only: a ruler or straightedge

Spanish Language and French Language exams: a battery operated cassette tape recorder will be provided.

Important Information Regarding Finals Seniors and students enrolled in AP and IB classes may be exempt from taking some or all of their final exams. The

following information was given to students by teachers and via the morning announcements.

Senior Final Exam Exemption (seniors only) � A student can elect this option for a maximum of three classes. � A student must have earned a 90% or grade of “A” in the class. � A student cannot have any in-school or out-of-school suspensions. � A student cannot have any unexcused absences in any class. � The exemption option is not available for College Now classes if the student is taking the class for College Now

credit.

� This option is only available for the second semester.

Advanced Placement and IB Final Exam Exemption (any student taking an AP/IB course) � Students can exempt out of each class final for which they take the formal AP/IB test. Proof of AP/IB registra-

tion is required. � Students must meet all criteria for the senior exam exemption regarding grades, discipline and attendance. � The exemption option is not available for College Now or Baker classes if the student is taking the class for dual

credit. � A student who exempts the final in a first semester AP course but does not take the AP exam in the spring must

either take the course final in the spring (the final grade will be adjusted based on the score attained on the final) or have his/her grade in the course changed to reflect the equivalent to earning 0% on the final

Summer School As you many know, summer school enrollment has been underway since February 8. The lat day to enroll for Se-mester 1 will be June 10 at 12:00 p.m. and the last day to enroll for Semester 2 will be July 8 at 12:00 p.m. You can enroll on-line using Visa or Mastercard at www.smsd.org or you can go to the summer school office located at Broadmoor Technical Center. If you choose to enroll in person at the Broadmoor location, you will need a course request form signed by your student’s counselor. The cost of summer school is $150 per semester. Semester 1 classes will e held from June 14-July 2 and Semester 2 classes will be held from July 12-30. Classes will begin at 7:00 a.m. and will last till 12:00 Noon. The location of summer school this year will be Shawnee Mission North-

west, 12701 West 67th Street.

Annual Sports Physical Night Mark your calendar for our annual sports physical night. The date is Tuesday, May 11, 2010 beginning at 6:00pm.

In order to alleviate the long lines and lengthy wait times, we have made some changes to the process. One of those

changes is assigning times by alphabet instead of grade. Physical exams are provided by physicians at a charge of

$10.00 for a basic physical without ECG. The expense for an ECG will be covered by the Jordan Robert Mann

Foundation, although a minimum donation of $15.00 to the Foundation would be appreciated. This is a tax deducti-

ble donation. This physical can be used for any fall, winter, or spring sport. Please note that if you had an ECG last

year you do not need another one.

Summer Camps There are many camps available over the summer, including basketball, football, baseball, soccer, volleyball, wres-

tling, and bowling. Registration forms are available on the individual sport’s website or in the office. If you have

any questions, please contact the coach or the AD Secretary at 993-6602.

What Do I Need to Do to Make Sure I’m Ready for Fall Sports? Practice/Tryouts for the fall athletic season will begin on Monday, August 16. It is not too early to begin preparing

for participation I the following fall sports: football, girl’s golf, girl’s tennis, gymnastics, boy’s soccer, cross coun-

try, and volleyball. Please make sure that you keep the following in mind:

� Get a physical exam on or after May 1, 2010. Make a copy of the physical exam to keep at home and bring the

completed 4-page original to the AD Secretary in the front office. Please hand it directly to the secretary. It is

best not to mail the physical to the school.

� Fill out an Athletic Participation Packet, making sure that you have signed on all pages requiring a parent and/or

student signature. Bring the completed form to the AD Secretary in the front office.

� Make sure that you are in compliance with KSHSAA and SMSD Policy, which states that all students involved

in athletics, debate, forensics, and cheerleading must be passing 5 subjects from the beginning of the semester

through the end of the week in which the competition occurs. The student must have passed 5 new subjects the

previous semester in order to be eligible. Credits for serving as a lab assistant do not count towards academic

eligibility.

Fall Sports Meet the Coach Night Fall Sports Meet the Coach Night will take place on Monday, August 23 at SM East at 6:00 p.m. Meet the Coach

Night provides parents an opportunity to meet their son or daughter’s coach and receive information regarding team

rules, expectations, procedures, etc. Parents/guardians and athletes planning to participate in any fall, winter, or

spring sport must attend.

Welcome Please welcome our new head volleyball coach, Rosacarla Ribeiro Salanoa and our new head girl’s basketball

coach, Scott Stein. In addition, please welcome Jeremy Higgins as the new Athletic Director for next year.

Jim Ricker will be returning to the classroom full time.

prior consent of parents or eligible students. If you have objection to the release of such information regarding a

student in said district, you must file your written objection on or before September 15. Such written objection

should be signed and filed with the appropriate school. Upon the filing of such written objection, the designated

information will not be released without prior consent.

Beth Giles, computer clerk in the counseling office. At the time of submission, student information will be re-

stricted. If the refusal is not filed, Shawnee Mission East assumes there is no objection to the release of the informa-

dent. If you submit a Refusal Request, student information will be restricted for ALL contacts. Requests submitted

“Celebrate Tradition - Lancer Blues & BBQ” - An Adult Social and Auction benefiting

The Shawnee Mission East Educational Excellence Fund.

Join us for the 2010-11 Feast for East. This adult social and auction called, “Celebrate Tradition - Lancer Blues & BBQ”, will be held at Milburn Country Club in Overland Park. Come join in the fun, socialize with old friends and meet new ones as patrons of SME come together for an enriching event. The East Fund supports and enriches our students’ learning environment. Funds raised at Lancers Blues and BBQ will support classroom programs, staff development, technology needs and other requests submitted by those involved in the educational environment at SME.
