KIWANIS ONE DAY//April 6, 2013

KIWANIS ONE DAY// April 6, 2013

Kiwanis One Day is an international event in which Kiwanis members

from around the globe participate in charity and community service related events. This extraordinary day falls on the first Saturday of April every year making it perfect for out door events as our valleys break out of winter. Many schools in our Division focus on the “spring cleaning” aspect of community service. This year, for example, the Grants Pass High School Key Club, along with the Grants Pass Kiwanis Club, removed hazardous materials such as old metal and rotting wood from the horse stalls at the Josephine County Fairgrounds. This Key club did an excellent job, and had fun! Way to go Grants Pass!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: There will be a DCM held on Friday, June 14th in Medford. The location is TBA. There will be food, drinks, and information. It is important that all club members attend!

LOCKER DÉCOR FUNDRAISER The Grants Pass High School Key

Club kicked off their Locker decorating fundraiser last week by covering all of their member’s lockers with wrapping paper and messages! In order to enact this fundraiser the officers had to seek the approval of the athletic director, measure the school lockers, then find wrapping paper that was eye catching on a budget! (the dollar tree had some great finds!) The Key Club officers originally heard about this fundraiser at DCON and heard that our own Ashland High Key Club had success with a similar fundraiser. They will charge non members $2 for similar decorations with customizable messages and locker colors. The Club aims to raise $50 by the end of the school year which they will put towards project expenses and DCON.

Is your school in need of fundraising ideas?

Here are a few (and yes, I did get most of these from

the Key Club International Website– so visit it! www.keyclub.org)

• Make& sell buttons • Sell snow cones • Val-o-grams • Yard Sale • Haunted house • Throw a Dance

• Hold a run • Make& sell paper

flowers • Have a bake sale • Hold a raffle • Decorate Lockers!

My name is Natalie Fontes, I’m a sophomore at North Valley and I’ll be the Key Club treasurer next year. At North Valley I have also participated in Brian Bowl and Speech and Debate, as well as taking several challenging courses such as honors and AP classes. I really like shopping and (spending) money so the role as treasurer seems to fit, and I hope I can do well next year managing our club’s budget.

NATALIE FONTES, Treasurer

Hey there, this is Bryce. Because you of course want to hear about me; I have lived in Grants Pass all my life, and I gotta say we really live in a beautiful place. I'm a sophomore at Grants Pass High and I am involved in a couple clubs and programs like the Marching Band and National Honor Society. I am going to once again be the Key Club Vice President at GPHS this coming year. I could say some pretty cliché things about how we are going to have "the best year ever," but instead I just want to say that I will do what I can, and that I came to this organization to serve. I hope we come in a common

goal.

BRYCE THOMPSON, Vice President

KATIE WESTBERRY, President

Hi, I am Katie! Some of my favorite things to do is: sing, study, and go hiking with my dog!

MEET THE NEW OFFICERS!

Hello fellow Key Club members! My name is Michaela Malos and I am the secretary of Grants Pass High School's Key Club. Last year I was also the secretary of our club. I have already learned an incredible amount on how to improve the efficiency of our club, mainly due to this years District Convention! I plan to use my knowledge and experience from other officer positions in similar clubs to enhance our service dedicated clubs. Every day I am reminded that my true passion remains in service and the betterment of our community, lets spread the passion! I cannot wait to work with each of you!

MICHAELA MALOS, Secretary

I don't have many hobbies, but I do like to help others in my free time.

MEET THE NEW OFFICERS!

YUDA BANDS: changing a life.

Just a few of the many styles, all handmade in Guatemala…

This month from May 6th until May 17th

North Valley High School Key Club is selling “Yuda Bands” (pictured below) around their school and com- munity. President Cheyenne Low first became aware of this unique opportunity at this year’s DCON in Seat- tle. As of May 10th North Valley is responsible for selling 61 of these bracelets and raising 427 total dollars in their effort. All of the money raised by selling these bracelets goes to children in Guatemala. Ana Lool (pictured above) is the child that North Valley High chose to sponsor. The money they raised will go to her education and the supplies that are necessary for her to have a good education. When Ana finishes school she wants to be a teacher; North Valley High School Key Club is helping her accomplish her dreams. Yuda Bands is a unique organization that allows children to empower themselves. Yuda Bands provides children in poverous (no that is not a “real” word) conditions with work making bracelets. All of the money made selling these bracelets goes back to the Children. This allows the children to bring themselves out of poverty, complete their education, and break the cycle that plagues so many families worldwide. **For more information visit the Yuda Band website (http://www.yudabands.org) or contact Cheyenne Low (President, North Valley Key Club, at (541)659-4845.
