May – September 2016
Latest happenings…
With the unwavering support of our funders, supporters, and the educators
whom we work with, we have been able to work with full momentum in the
second half of 2016.
We have poured our energy into the following areas:
1. Training and supporting trainers, teachers and schools in implementing our
early literacy program. We continue to work with over 120 trainers and
mentors in Papua and West Papua in a literacy improvement program
piloted by UNICEF. We have also trained six teachers from Maluku Tenggara
to be mentors to support teachers and schools in their district and continue
to work with schools nearer home in Jakarta to implement our program. The
specialized skills gained by the teachers from Maluku Tenggara have been
recognized by the Department of Education and the teachers have already
been assigned to work with struggling readers in the area.
2. Collaborating with teacher training institutions. We are in the stages of setting
up programs with the University of Education Indonesia-Elementary
Education (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia) and the School of Further
Education for Teacher Training and Education (Sekolah Tinggi Keguruan dan
Ilmu Pendidikan) in Sorong, West Papua. Both programs will be in the form of
teacher and lecturer training focusing on creativity and early literacy
education.
3. In-house trainer and teacher training. We are aiming to have a new group of
trainers ready by the middle of next year. Their current role as teachers in
Klub Belajar Credo will be filled by our trainee teachers who will complete
their teacher training program by the end of this year.
4. Development of teaching resources. Our early literacy program is near
completion and we will begin development of a foundational mathematics
program that we aim to disseminate in the same way as we have with our
early literacy program.
Thank you to all the people who have enabled us to keep going with our work!
