assing right through the département theMayenne was for a long time the region’s mostimportant economic artery. The first known textthat talks about navigating the river dates fromthe time of Charlemagne. But we may supposethat this method of transport began wellbefore then in the Gallo-Roman period. Andwe know that it continued right up until themiddle of the last century with the bargesthat went to and fro, plying their trade intimber, oil or Loire sand.
It is around this emblematic valley that the département forged its soul and construc-ted its first buildings. To begin with the sacred foundation of temples, churches andmonasteries; after that fortified châteaux used the river as a line of defence andthen finally towns and villages came to cluster around this river of life.
After the short period of disaffectionwhich followed the cessation of com-mercial activity on the river, theMayenne has today found a new lifethanks to the river tourism for which it iseminently well equipped but alsobecause of the recent re-opening of itstowpath.
From what was historically a first naturalroad where horses pulled their water-borne loads, the Mayenne has todaybecome a leisure facility for all non-motorised pleasure-seekers.
This 85km. long ribbon also constitutes an excellent refe-rence point from which to experience and taste the rich-ness and authenticity of the area: its protected wildlifeareas rich in flora and fauna... its pretty, floral lock-kee-pers cottages... the gourmet welcome of its restau-rants... the cosy charm of its houses... the numerousleisure activities available on or close by the water.
This is where the towpath begins. In the heart of the town of Mayenne the MacRacken bridge marks the zero point and the beginning of an 85km. long journey,85km. uninterrupted kilometres that allow you to travel right across the département as far as Daon and the edge of Anjou.
Restored by the Conseil général, open to all forms of non-motorised * pleasure traffic and equipped with information boards that make this ‘road’ a truly openbook, it is unique of its type, as much for its length as for the quality of its restoration. Access to it is regularly indicated on the N162 to the north of Laval andon the N162 and the D112 in the south.
The towpath is open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Obviously we ask everyone to have regard for other users.

he Mayenne is the kingdom of the coarsefish and big catches: pike, zander, carp etc. A localpeculiarity: you can even fish at night thanks tonight swims made available especially for carpanglers.
For the rest it’s up to you. In the north, above thepublic reaches, the banks remain in private hands and fishing is subject to prior per-mission. On the towpath, on the other hand, you can fish where you please with theproviso that you have a rod licence etc.
Access to fishing areas
Access is usually easy and from the paths that lead to the locks. Motorised traffic isprohibited on the towpath but you will not have to go far to uncover a nice spot. In addi-tion, the Mayenne federation has developed bankside areas “especially for anglers”.
Reserved fishing areas
Situated near car parks and easily accessible, these areas areclearly designated and are reserved exclusively for use byanglers so as to avoid the problems that other types of towpathusers could cause.

The Mayenne valley is a protected naturalarea... and will remain so for as long as peoplelook after it. Put another way, there are certaincommon sense rules to observe.
Firstly the environment itself. Apart from res-pect for people and the properties that borderthe river, we ask you to leave places in thesame state that you find them - clean andunspoilt – an obvious priority.
The same goes for the towpath where theobservation of a few simple rules makes lifemore pleasant for everyone: horse riders andcyclists to keep to a sensible speed, have res-pect for other towpath users, especially whenpassing, etc... And finally, don’t forget that alittle ‘bonjour’ is always welcome.
Restaurants
There are many possibilities tochoose from and you will findquality gite accommodation inthe heart of the Mayenne valley.
There are hotels, guest rooms, gites and camp sites: all in adelightful setting and all wai-ting to offer you a warm wel-come.

Water currents below a weir are dangerous. Typically there is a whirlpool motion which sucksunder everything on the surface at the foot of the weir. It is a danger little recognised by riverusers and is the cause of numerous fatal accidents. It is absolutely forbidden to approach.
