Mayfair Care Centre successfully completed the Certificate of
Recognition (COR) Maintenance audit for our Occupational
Health and Safety Management System. This internal audit was
conducted by our internal auditor using the Alberta Association
of Safety Partnerships protocol and was conducted from Octo-
ber 21-28 2019. The purpose of the audit is to ensure workers,
including contractors, at every level are familiar with the re-
quirements of Alberta Human Resources and Employment Oc-
cupational Health and Safety Legislation as it relates to their
work processes. We are happy to report we achieved an overall
score of 99%. Mayfair Care Centre continues to promote a cul-
ture of safety for our residents, staff, contractors and visitors.

Hospitality
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The Hospitality department is busy working on some initiatives for 2020.
These include a mild renovation of Mayfair, thorough and regular room audits of
our resident spaces and better use of technology by our staff.
Did you know? Mayfair welcomes families to utilize our spaces for gatherings,
celebrations and such. Please contact Stuart or Tracey if you wish to book a room.
Space is available on a first come first served basis. If an area is already in use we
will do our best to offer alternatives.
PRIVATE ROOM REQUEST
Our office receives a lot of requests to understand the process of moving into
a private room for their loved ones. All residents who arrive to Mayfair do so in-
to a semi-private space. They are also added to our waitlist for a private room.
Each unit has only a few of these. As they are occupied it requires them to be
available. Once they are available the list will be consulted based on the current
area your loved one lives in. Our Nursing Management group and Hospitality
then look at the suitability of a particular resident (next on the list based on their
arrival date) for being in a private room considering their medical needs, sociali-
zation/ isolation and risk management factors. Once these have been verified and
ok’d an offer will be made to the resident and their primary contact. Please note,
semi-private spaces, even with only one person living in it cannot be converted to
a “private” room.

WATER BREAKS
During the extreme cold we managed to get away with minimal issues to our systems.
We did have a few pipes freeze which have since thawed and returned to normal ser-
vice. The thaw that followed caused some burst pipes in Heritage unit. No resident
room was affected and the staff on duty and on-call managed the situation well.
We will continue to assess the mechanics and have experts coming in this week to re-
view. There may be some further work needed to fully repair the area in question. We
thank you in advance for your patience and support. If you notice anything unusual
when visiting please report it immediately to the Nurse on duty.

CLOTHING AND PERSONAL BELONGINGS
All clothing for our residents must be labelled even if family are responsible for laun-
dry. This ensures items return back to the correct resident in the instance where it ends
up in our system. This can occur if an item becomes heavily soiled and is unable to be
left in the room. Labels are created and applied in-house. Please bring all new items to
the Unit Nurse or directly to the Hospitality Office to be taken care of.
As a reminder Mayfair Care Centre is not an insurer of any personal items. These in-
clude Hearing aids, Dentures, eye glasses etc. Residents or their loved ones may organ-
ize for these items to be insured privately to cover costs associated with loss, damage or
replacement. Please seek further information from Stuart.

Nutrition By: Jaspreet Singh, Registered Dietitian
Nutrition at any life stage can be complicated…even more so as we age. Many factors can contribute
to poor nutrition in the elderly. Some of these factors include:
Dementia or other cognitive problems
Change/ loss of appetite
Physical challenges-chewing/ swallowing problems
Helping our resident’s manage their nutrition provides benefits such as:
Improved immune function
Improved energy levels
Better overall health
By encouraging nutritional intake throughout the day we aim to meet our resident’s nutri-
tional needs while also providing them with the enjoyment food brings! A variety of snacks
and beverages are always available. Do not hesitate to see the unit nurse if would like to
have something to offer to your loved ones when visiting.
Additionally, please feel free to join your loved one to share a meal together. Meals can be
purchased for a small cost. Eating together is an important part of meal enjoyment and sat-
isfaction!

ONGOING INITIATIVES
Resident and Family Council:
Resident and family council is a vital and essential aspect of our facility vision which is to es-
tablish a safe and supportive environment that facilitates residents and/or staff developing
trusting relationships and to encourage self-expression, personal choice and open communi-
cation. We meet together every last Monday of each month to discuss and identify resident
concerns, develop suggestions on improving services, or to resolve differences in resident’s
home. We encourage and welcome family members to attend as this directly affects their
loved one and the environment they are residing in.
Upcoming programs for the New Year:
Our department strives to ensure that our programs we provide our residents are evidence-
based, innovative, and fun. We are constantly developing new programs and revising cur-
