Remember – And Come On, Let’s Go!

Dear Mayfield Friends,

We begin this week with World Communion Sunday (October 4). On Sunday, we will hear the words of Jesus: “Do this in remembrance of me” (Luke 22:19) as we join with Christians from around the world, remembering that together we are “the Body of Christ – alive and at work in the world.”

Remember is a great word. Think of recall, remind, ref lect, recollect; all of these words can bring back to our awareness something of great importance, something that gets put back together.

When we remember who Jesus is, we bring to mind all that we love about Jesus – his love for God and for others, his saving work in our lives, his welcome of the children, his compassion for the least and the last and the lost, his connection with regular people like you and me.

We remember his wisdom that comes from the Father; we remember his courage to “speak truth to power” even when it leads to the Cross; we remember his integrity that aligned his words and actions with the Father’s will, work, way; and we remember his goodness that is a full expression of the goodness of God the Father, demonstrated in Jesus, and produced in us by the Holy Spirit. When we remember who Jesus is, we remember he is our Savior and Lord who calls us to his mission: to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world (Matthew 28:16-20).

When we remember who Jesus is, we also remember who we are as followers of Jesus, seeking wisdom from the Father; finding courage to “speak truth to power”; aligning our thoughts, words, and actions with integrity; expressing his goodness in all we say and do.

We are planning a celebration for “All Saints Day” on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 PM. All Saints Day comes six months after Easter in the Christian calen-dar. It is a day for remembering those in our families and faith community who left us for the loving arms of Jesus during the past year, but who continue to be

present with us in our hearts. We will read names and remember the lives of those who graced our path and journeyed with us as a gift from God.

If you have a loved one whom you have lost since November 2019, we would like to remember and celebrate that person’s life during this service. Please contact Cyndi Nicholson, our coordinator of care and prayer ministries, at [email protected], or call the office at 440-729-4006.

So we begin our book study together, The Sermon on the Mount: A Begin-ner’s Guide to the Kingdome of Heaven, by Amy-Jill Levine. This will be no remedial course in Basic Christianity 101. Rather, it offers the possibility of going deep into a transforming encounter with Jesus, our Living Lord!

The Sermon on the Mount is the lens through which we can read all the rest of the New Testament. What comes before Matthew 5-7 anticipates these teachings of Jesus, and these teachings of Jesus then resonate with all that follows through all four Gospels, echoing through the Letters of Paul, the Epistle of James, even the Book of Revelation – and resonating in our lives and the Church as well.

In short, this is not really a guide only for new Christians just embarking on their faith journey; this is a guide for discipled veterans that will take us deep into the essential teachings of Jesus. I expect we will encounter Jesus in our work together, and I expect we will be challenged to the core and – as we take the words of Jesus to heart – transformed from the core outward into word and action.

The time is right for this study. We are truly in a time of turmoil and crisis as a great but troubled nation and as a great but troubled Church. May we find wisdom, courage, integrity, goodness to speak truth and act justly no matter where we go or whom we are with.

Come on! Let’s go Mayfield Church! “The time has come. The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” (Mark 1:15).

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven,

Pastor Jim

Every Sunday at 10 AM!

You will be able to access the weekly services through our YouTube channel and the link will be emailed every Sunday morning. If you don’t already receive our weekly emails, please email your preferred address to [email protected].

If you do not have access to the internet and would like a CD sent to your home, please call Cyndi Nicholson at 440-729-4006 x106.

You are invited to worship with us in the Worship Center every

Sunday at 10 AM! We ask that you try to arrive as soon as possible after the doors open at 9:50 AM, so that we can get everyone seated and ready for worship. You will be asked to proceed immediately into the worship center where the ushers will help you find your seat, and when the service is over, exit directly to the parking lot. We understand that this will be uncomforta-ble for some, but we are doing our best to keep everyone as safe as possible. We will not be able to have our custom-ary greeting during the service, and there will be no passing of baskets for our tithes and offerings. Baskets will be placed at the end of each aisle for your contributions. We will not have hymnals available, but you of course are welcome to bring your own Bibles. We will have music and soloists, but there will be no congregational singing. This worship service will be different from any you have ever attended – that’s for sure. But we intend to make it a joyful, warm-hearted, worshipful experience for so many of us who have missed each other during these long weeks, and we look forward to normalcy for Mayfield Church!

Mission Outreach Council By Phil David

The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is creating special challenges for our MOC team and the missions that we support. This month I want to high-light a couple of those challenges as we enter the final quarter of the year.

The current environment both increases the needs for assistance for the missions that we support while making fundraising more challenging. At Mayfield Church, a key example of this is our inability to have the missions breakfasts we have become accustomed to for raising funds each month for our “Hands That Serve” ministries.

November is customarily the month that we have the Angel Tree mission as our “Hands That Serve” minis-try. Our team is especially concerned about getting enough support for Angel Tree this year. We expect to have 50 children and may be asked to consider taking additional names in order to assure that all needs can be met. We would ask that you include those planning for Angel Tree this year in your prayers along with the children and their families. If you have not participated in Angel Tree in the past, it is a ministry which provides gifts for children with incarcerated parents, providing a gift in the name of the parent for the child.

If you plan to participate in Angel Tree this year, we would ask that you take a minute and send a quick email letting us know of your support to [email protected] or you may note this on the registration card if you attend worship in person.

This month, we will hold our annual Heifer drive. Many of you are in the habit of visiting the Heifer table to make your contribution and pickup greeting cards to send to friends you are honoring with a Heifer contribu-tion. This year, we will have a table set up on Sunday, Oct. 25, for Heifer Honor Cards, but we will be taking donations through the giving portal or by mail and will be sure to get your greeting cards sent to you if you choose not to attend church in-person.

In November, it will be time again to choose “Hands That Serve” ministries for next year. Hopefully we will soon be able to return to our delicious monthly mission breakfasts. Please see the application on pages 10 and 11 of this newsletter.

Heifer International is on a mission to end hunger and poverty. They do this by forming a partnership with the communities they serve.

Heifer’s programs start with a seed investment of livestock or agriculture. Then they train the participants to care for the animals and crops, which culminates in the recipients being able to start their own businesses. These families are able to earn a living income and contin-uously lift up their communities as they train the next generation of leaders.

By supporting and training the world's farmers, ranchers, and female business owners, Heifer International gives these families opportunities for education, improved nutrition, and independence.

However, there is still a long way to go. More than 800 million people around the world go to bed hungry every night. Heifer International’s goal is to change that!

Mayfield Church has supported Heifer for many years. Last year, we raised over $8,200 because of your generosity.

It is not too early to start your Christmas shopping. This year, make Christmas even more meaningful! When you give the gift of Heifer, you can avoid the crowded stores. You do not have to pay for shipping! In addition, you do not have to worry about size. A gift of Heifer “fits” eve-ryone.

When you give a Heifer gift, we will provide you with a greeting card for you to send to the person you are honoring with this gift. Heifer Honor Cards make wonderful alternative gifts for Christmas and other occa-sions.

On pages 8 and 9 of the newsletter, you will find a list of Heifer gifts from which you can choose. Please make your check out to ‘Mayfield Church’ and write ‘Heifer’ in the memo area of your check. If you want Heifer Honor Cards, please attach a note to your check, or contact Carol Mulhern at [email protected] and the cards will be mailed to you.

Covenant / Application for 2021

“HANDS THAT SERVE”

Mission Program at Mayfield Church

In October, our Missions Committee will meet to determine which local, national, and international projects will be the focus of our congregation’s support in 2021. Applications from mission and ministry teams are encouraged. Here are the rules for applicants:

The team agrees to publicize its ministry in the newsletter and

on the website by providing a story of up to 350 words and a photograph by the newsletter deadline.

The team agrees to have a member present on the first Sunday

of its month to address the congregation during worship. The team may provide a slide show or video during the four-minute presentation at announcements time.

If permitted by health and safety guidelines, the team agrees

to host a fellowship / fund-raising breakfast on the second Sunday of its month (the third Sunday in the month of May) to help communicate its ministry. An informational table in Fellowship Hall during the month also is helpful.

The team may ask the congregation to collect items for its min-

istry. If the team collects items, the team agrees to pick up the items by the last day of its month.

If the team leads a mission or travel trip, the team agrees to pro-

vide the Missions Committee with a pre-approved budget be-fore it leaves and a list of its expenses when it returns.

Today in our prayer devotion corner I would like to take you on a virtual tour of our prayer walk. At each station, we have a bench for sitting and reflecting. As you enter the prayer walk you will notice the first bench and it says “Hear my prayer”

Ps. 17:6 “I call on you, my God, for you will answer me; turn your ear to me and hear my prayer.”

What is your prayer that you want Our Father to hear? What prayer do you want Our Father to answer? Maybe peace in our world, or to have a cure for covid 19,

maybe a prayer for your child this school year, or how about Lord show Mayfield Church how to seek your Kingdom today.

Let the Lord hear your prayer and move to the next station where the bench reminds us to “love.” Examine your heart are you loving your neighbor? Are you loving the Lord with all your heart? Are you loving yourself?

Jn. 14:23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.”

Continue to the next station – this is where we are to “Be Still.” Sit and be still, you may receive direction from the Holy Spirit or you may receive His peace that surpasses all understanding. You might receive strength to go on. Or you may just be filled with His joy to pass on to others.

Page 15: Mayfield Newsletter October 2020€¦ · Newsletter Editor: Rebecca Sulzer [Cont. on p. 2] Remember – And ome On, Let’s o! Dear Mayfield Friends, We begin this week with World

15

Ps. 37:7 “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him.”

I hope you are enjoying the new prayer walk and were able to see the beautiful Hibiscus plant last month. I noticed some butterflies checking them out. I wonder if they were smiling as I was when seeing them both.

A note from Pastor Jan Jan Health Update (Actually Something Different)

Friends, many of you know that my mother, Marga-ret, died last month at 95. It happened the night be-fore my second chemo treatment. While my brother, sister and I celebrate the many years we had with Mom, we also miss her. It is difficult to lose a parent, no matter what age they go to heaven. I wrote a life story that I read at my mother’s service on Sept. 23. I thought you – especially those who prayed for her

and sent her cards throughout the years, and those who have reached out to me recently – might enjoy learning more about my wonderful mother and her life. – Pastor Jan

Mom, you were born in April 1925, in Delaware, Ohio. Your life, however, was shaped well before your birth, by the lives of your parents, Donald Jay and Anna Naomi (Mothersill) Hornberger.

Your father, known to everyone as Don or DJ, was born in Michigan, and graduated from the University of Michigan.

It took your dad eight years to get his degree, because he and his brother, Ted, would alternate attending school. He would attend school for a year, while his brother worked to send him there, and then he would work a year to send his brother to school.

Both brothers became professors; your dad became a professor of eco-nomics at Ohio Wesleyan and then later treasurer and vice president of business affairs at the university.

Before that ever happened, however, your dad went to Holly, Mich., to teach math and science and coach baseball and basketball at the high school.

That’s where he met your mother.

He needed a place to stay, and he was told to talk to Henrietta Church, whose husband, Howard, a pharmacist, had died of appendicitis a while back and who had a large old home with possible rooms to rent.

Henrietta didn’t think she needed a roomer, but she listened to the young man, and after an hour, decided he was a pretty good guy … so she gave him the smallest room she had.

Henrietta had a niece named Anna Mothersill.

Page 17: Mayfield Newsletter October 2020€¦ · Newsletter Editor: Rebecca Sulzer [Cont. on p. 2] Remember – And ome On, Let’s o! Dear Mayfield Friends, We begin this week with World

17

Anna’s mother, Carrie, had died of pneumonia when Anna was 8, and she had been sent to live with Aunt Hettie. It was supposed to be temporary, but it turned out to be permanent.

Anna lost not only her mother, but also her father and three older siblings, as they lived on the family farm a good distance away.

But Anna persevered. She went to the Cleary Business College and then the Ypsilanti Normal College for Teachers. At this time she was a first-grade teacher in public schools in northern Michigan. Many of her students came from immigrant families.

She came home one spring break to Aunt Hettie’s house and was intro-duced to Don.

Anna wasn’t really impressed with Don, so much so that when he asked her to marry him, in the basement of Aunt Hettie’s house, where they were sent to get the popcorn maker one winter night, Anna said she’d have to think about it.

Eventually, she came around.

Mom, you were the first of their two children; Howard Dean was born two years after you.

You and “H,” as he was called, were quite different – you excelled at English and social studies, and would become a teacher, while “H” loved math and science, and became an accountant – but you loved each other – and loved to tease each other – whenever you got together. A favorite time was winter vacations in Venice, Fla., until “H” died at 78 in 2005.

Throughout your early years, the church – William Street Methodist Epis-copal Church in Delaware – was a big part of your life. You helped teach Sunday school and also attended youth group there.

In 1943, Mom, you graduated from Willis High School. Your friends called you “Margey,” and you were known for your infectious giggle, competitive spirit on the basketball court, and skill in editing the yearbook.

You went down the street to Ohio Wesleyan, where in 1947 you graduated with a degree in early childhood development from the home economics department.

Page 18: Mayfield Newsletter October 2020€¦ · Newsletter Editor: Rebecca Sulzer [Cont. on p. 2] Remember – And ome On, Let’s o! Dear Mayfield Friends, We begin this week with World

You played field hockey, and were the executive secretary of the Women Student Government Association, senior editor of the yearbook, and a member of many service organizations.

You also were a proud member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority (Rho Deuteron chapter) and recently received your 75th-year membership pin. After college, your first teaching job was at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where you were part of the Child Health Research Project with the children of the doctors and nurses. You also would become a preschool teacher at a private school in Perrysburg, Ohio, and a kindergarten and first grade teacher for the Lisbon Public Schools.

Mom, you met Truesdell – Billy – Fillmore as a child, as your families had summer cottages five doors down from each other on Marble Lake outside of Quincy, Mich.

You learned to swim by the time you were 6, and became a champion frog-catcher (your dad used frogs to fish and would give you 5 cents for each frog).

Billy caught the creatures for his mom, who would cook up their legs to eat. One day you both were in a marshy area, searching for frogs – you with your hands and he with a trap and a net that he would flail about – when a snake jumped out of the water.

Billy panicked and ran down the beach.

“He never looked back,” you told me. “It was each man for himself.”

As you grew up, Bill and “Meg,” as he called you, kept in touch, even as he served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

Dad wanted to become a pilot, but he was color-blind, and was not accept-ed. So he became a gunnery instructor, teaching B-24 gunners at the Tonopah Army Air Field in Nevada. In later years, he would receive letters from men who said his words and advice saved their lives.

Dad’s first job was managing a factory for Tanglewood Industries in Philadelphia.

One winter day, Dad took a Greyhound bus back to Michigan to visit his family. In the middle of the night, near Paoli, Pa., the bus crashed into a truck carrying 33,000 pounds of sheet metal.

Dad and a sailor were sitting in the seats behind the driver; the sailor was killed and Dad was severely injured, breaking his shoulder, and needing 20 pints of blood.

There was a time when it appeared Dad might not survive.

Mom, you went to him and stayed by his side.

After he recovered, Dad asked you to marry him at “The Point,” on his parents’ property at Marble Lake.

Mom, you told me, “They [that is, Dad’s family] all knew he was going to do it, and had seen the ring and given their approval. I said yes immediately.”

You and Dad were married in April 1951, at William Street Church, a ceremony made all the more memorable when your brother offered to shine Dad’s shoes. “H” put black polish on the top and the soles of the shoes, so Dad left footprints all over the carpet in Pastor Lomond’s study.

Dad worked as a plant manager for Tanglewood and then Hood Chemical, which became Texize and then Dow.

Together, you had three children – Don, Janet and Julie – and lived in Lisbon, Ohio; Medina, Ohio; Somerset, N.J., and finally, Delaware, Ohio, where you had retired and where Bill passed away in 1996.

You would stay in your beloved childhood home 10 more years before entering Fairhaven Community, after a fall, in which you hit your head and suffered a minor stroke.

It took about nine months for you to adjust to Fairhaven, and I often was in tears when I would leave after a visit. But one day you just decided to make the best of it, and from then on, you did. You made friends, and not surpris-ingly, the nurses and aides loved you … up until the day you died, last month, at the age of 95.

Much of the information I have shared came from a conversation I had with Mom, in 1999, that I taped, as we drove to Marble Lake.

Her voice was strong, and she was giggling and laughing as she spoke about her life.

My last question was this: Mom, what would you want to tell your grand-children and your future great-grandchildren?

And Mom said this: “I would tell them that they are all wonderful and I am so glad that I am related to them. I wish them a lot of luck and love.

“And wherever I am, I’ll be rooting for you.”

Sometimes, an article that has been in a previous newsletter is worth repeating. During this day and age, this is one of those articles. If you find yourself in any of these situations, or others, please reach out to Stephen Ministry.

People often ask, “What exactly is a Stephen Minister?” One way to put it is that Stephen Ministers are the After People.

Stephen Ministers are there:

-After the phone call you hoped you’d never get.

-After the divorce papers are served and the bottom falls out of your life.

-After the funeral, when everyone has left and the emotions you’ve held at bay come crashing in on you.

-After the doctor says, “I’m sorry, but there’s nothing more we can do.”

-After the nursing home director shakes your hand and says, “Welcome to your new home.”

-After the last child honks the horn, waves, and drives away - and the house suddenly seems empty.

-After the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and your loved one is led away.

-After the baby arrives, demanding more of you than you ever dreamed possible.

-After you find a pink slip with your final paycheck.

-After your family and friends have heard your story one too many times, but you still need to talk it out.

Stephen Ministers are the “After People.” They are ready to come alongside you - or your friends, neighbors, coworkers, or relatives - and provide comfort and support for as long after as needed.

If you or someone you know would like more information about receiving the services of a Stephen Minister, contact the Stephen Ministry Referrals Coordinator, Joyce Gordon, at 216-570-3767 (leave a message) or [email protected].

A note regarding our Children’s director

As many of you know, our Children's Director, Jessica Martz, and husband Brandon, welcomed Beau James in this world on Tuesday, Sept. 8 (see announcement on page 22). A few days after Jess and Brandon brought him home from the hospital, they noticed Beau twitching on the left side of his body. After taking him to the pediatrician, it was confirmed that Beau was having seizures and was transferred to Cleveland Clinic's

PICU in Cleveland. The results of his MRI showed the seizures were from a stroke, likely during delivery. The MCA stroke was considered major, affecting a third of the right side of his brain. Now for the good news. He’s otherwise healthy and happy! The con-nections in his brain are still pliable and it is possible he won’t present any issues from this stroke if his brain rewires and makes new connec-tions helping with his development. About 90% of infants who have a MCA stroke never have another one. Beau was able to go home while on anti-seizure medication and is do-ing great! Yay God! Jess and Brandon are grateful for the prayer warriors across the entire WORLD who are lifting them up in their homes, churches and everyday lives. Thanks for being Beau’s fans. If you would like to send a card, prayer, or love offering to Jess, Brandon, and Beau, please send it to:

Congratulations!

Jim and Jan Atterholt have attended Mayfield Church since the late 1990's and are moving to the Chicago area to be closer to family. Jim was a member of the Building Team, which accomplished the church relocation to Chesterland, as well as many other church com-mittees. Jan has been very active in the Prayer Ministry and they both attend the Seekers LifeGroup.

Jan and Jim, you will be dearly missed in our congregation and we will continue to lift you up in prayers during this new chapter!

In honor

Bible Memory Verse of the Month:

“I trust in God and am not afraid” Psalm 56:4

It is already October! We have all settled into this school year quite nicely and we are ready to add a few more teachers and a few more kids. We are maintaining the lower, safer ratios in each classroom and plan to grow slowly and responsibly. There is a lot of excitement in the fall air around here! For us, October brings lots of opportunities for learning activities and outdoor fun. The Heartland teachers will utilize all that the fall season offers to explore nature and how it changes. While doing this they are helping preschoolers recognize seasonal changes. Learning about season changes is important for their understanding of time and more about the physical world that God created for them. In keeping with a long Heartland tradition, we will end the month of October with our annual Story Book Celebration and Pajama Day. This celebration will just be a little different (but isn’t everything this year?). In years past, we had guest readers come in and share their favorite stories with the kids. This year, we are inviting EVERYONE who wants to make our day more fun, to video record themselves reading their favorite children’s story and email it to [email protected] before Oct. 29. On Friday, Oct. 30, our children will enjoy the videos all day long! We will have special treats and enjoy being together. If you want to learn more about how preschool play-based learning happens in a warm Christian environment, just ask by contacting Patty at [email protected] or 440-729-4006 ext. 116.
