The Mayne Tigers were able to break away from
their Noosa rivals in the dying stages of the game at
Mott Street yesterday in an enthralling battle of the
backlines.
Both sides were missing a few of their big stars but it
didn’t detract from a tense match where the footy
was in hot dispute for the entire game. The defensive
work of both teams featured with Mayne’s Tom
O’Malley and Bill Stephens almost impenetrable as
they grimly smothered, spoiled and repelled their
opponents good work. At the other end Bushie
Copeland was equally dour in defence which set the
scene for the day.
However, both sides were challenged in front of goal
with neither capitalising on set shot opportunities in
what was ideal conditions. The Mayne Tigers were
able to straighten things up late in the game to kick
away to a five goal win but will be sure to be setting
up in front of the goals during the week. Josh Caldow
was a key target for the home side as he brought
down what are now being seen as his trademark
hangers but will rue not being able to convert his
work into more majors.
In the midfield, it was close work and at times brutal
as both teams challenged each other physically as
they went in for the ball with no thought for life or
limb. The class of Ben Heffernan Roper gave the
Mayne side some clear air as he set up opportunities
for his forwards. Young Jasper Craven showed a
clean set of heals to drive the Tigers forward and
also finish with two goals. Craven’s diminutive
stature doesn’t restrict him to outside work as his

Reserves fight to the end
The battle of the Tigers in the reserve grade
competition has developed into a fierce
contest for the top spot with both clubs fielding
very closely matched teams.
The game yesterday at the Mott Street Den
was a physical encounter which the Noosa
Tigers led all day but there was never any
more than a two goal margin.
The Noosa side were determined to intimidate
their smaller opponents with their strong
physical approach but the local side was not
to be daunted and kept attacking all day.
The midfield of Paddy O’Brien and Danny
Evans were courageous and creative all day
while Dom Smith also played another bustling
role to break through packs and create
opportunities for his running teammates.
Up forward reliable club men Matt David and
Corey Massingham did everything necessary
to keep their names in contention for senior
selection kicking truly as the team
spearheads.
Gabe Dillon put his body on the line all day to
give the Tigers much needed possession
when required.
The home side was able to capitalise when
the Noosa side were forced to play with
seventeen men for much of the last quarter as
a result of a red card incident which had been
brewing all day.
The local Tigers kicked two goals and six
behinds as they peppered the sticks to one
goal two behinds in the last term and then
hung on for a critical win to regain the top of
the ladder with a one point advantage.
Scores: Mayne 9.10.64 d Noosa 10.3.63
Goals: C Massingham 4, M David, D Smith 2,
P O’Brien1.
Best: P O’Brien, M David, D Smith, D Evans,

Thirds big improvers
In an amazing improvement in form the
Tigers almost pulled off an emotional win
against northside rivals the Zillmere Eagles.
The Tigers were beaten by over 20 goals in
round one in their inauguaral match but such
has been the improvement for the Tigers that
they were a very real chance of taking out the
game on Friday night.
The mix of experience and youth has been a
heady cocktail for the Tigers as they show no
respect for their much more experienced
rivals each week.
The Tigers tackling and defensive effort was
first class putting the veteran Eagles under
constant pressure showing scant regard for
their elders.
The Tigers went into the first break with a
one point lead on the back of hard work.
Confidence was high as the game stepped
up a gear in both directions. Each side
kicked three goals in the second term leaving
the scores at level pegging at the main break.
The Eagles caught their breath during the
half time interlude and came out running to
kick two quick goals and have the Tigers on
the back foot.
Unfortunately the Tigers couldn’t bridge that
gap over the course of the game to finish up
ten points away from the Eagles at the end
but it had been a mighty ride and one that
gave all at Tigerland a big boost.
The Tigers midfield lead by Captain Tom
Ditchburn and Tony Stevens back from injury
got plenty of centre clearances while Jeremy
Falconer was courageous as usual.
Up front, the Tigers were inspired by a hard
working Al Norris who finished with three
goals and provided a busy and mobile target
all night.
Ollie Allbutt was dangerous off the backline
as he mopped up and ran forward on
numerous occasions.
The Tigers now go into their home game next
Friday night with the Kenmore Bears full of
confidence.
Scores: Zillmere 11.2.68 d Mayne 9.4.58
Goals: A Norris 3, O Allbutt, RJ Sapalo, D
Zanker, S Carrigan, S Forrester, T Stevens 1.
Best: A Norris, T Stevens, J Shanahan, O
Allbutt, J Woodward, J Falconer.

Tiger Tales
By Byron Parish
This week’s Tiger Tale is centred on one of
the newest, but most loved members of the
playing group.
Matt David strolled down to Mott Street one
fateful preseason night after hearing good
things from Ben Davies, and after just one
training session knew there was no looking
back.
A loud mouth, but dearly loved member of
the group, Matt has forged an incorrigible
reputation since moving from the Redlands
outfit.
A self-proclaimed gun forward, Matt David
has hit the ground running in his short time
around the club and is continuing his good
form in 2015.
Welcome first and foremost to Tiger Tales
Matt David
Thank you very much Byron Parish
First Question, what is your age?
I am 21
When did you make your debut for the
Mayne Tigers Football Club?
I made my debut for the Mayne Tigers
Round 1 2014 at Burpengary against the
Caboolture Lions
Did you win?
We won by about 198 points I think,
which was a pretty good start to my
Tiger career.
Was that your first taste of Senior football?

Graeme “Wally” Wallace has plenty of company
these days with the Reserves joining him each
week. The singing and chanting yesterday was
not exactly Cardiff Arms Park standard but it was
entertaining.
It was, I’d played a few pre-season games
for the seniors at Redlands but, no that
was my first actual senior game.
Before you came to Mayne you were at
Redlands, was that your junior club?
Yeah, I had been at the Redlands football
club since Auskick, so I was lucky enough
for my old man to coach me from Auskick
to senior, well reserve grade football, and
then Redlands entered the NEAFL.
What inspired the move from Redlands up to
the Mayne Tigers?
Benny Davies. I played footy at Redlands
with Ben and when I knew my time was
up there, Ben said what were my
thoughts on coming over to the Mayne
Tigers. My uncle actually used to play for
the Tigers back in the late ‘80’s, so it was
a no brainer. One session in and I was
hooked.
How did you know your time was up at
Redlands?
I probably knew playing reserve footy,
knowing that I probably wasn’t good
enough to make the step up to NEAFL
footy. I’m not there to be drafted, I’m here
to have some fun with my mates and to
come back to this league and you know
it’s a quality league, don’t get me wrong.
But there’s not the pressure there is in
NEAFL football.
Did you fight that decision to step away from
the NEAFL?
Not really, it wasn’t for me. Never having
to leave my junior club, and never being
the new guy. That was probably the
hardest decision, and I think it would have
been harder if the boys weren’t so
welcoming. But like I said, from day dot,
from the time trial, the boys were getting
around me and I knew this was the next
club for me.
You’re renowned as a forward, what’s your
best personal haul of goals in a match?
How much time do we have? [Laughs….
A little too long] Well set the scene, we
were driving up the Bruce Highway on a
Saturday morning. No, I kicked 10 straight
against Nambour and Hinterland up at
Palmwoods last year.
And your best Senior return for goals?
Probably, 5 straight against Nambour up
at Palmwoods again. The more times we
play Nambour the better.
What are your aspirations for the rest of the
year?
Mate, to win two in a row would be
absolutely fantastic. You don’t get that
opportunity to win a premiership that
often, and to win two in a row with some
of your best mates is something that really
drives me. With the young blokes coming
through, this club’s in a really good
position to set itself up to whatever we
aspire to be, but this year I think we’ve got
the talent, we’ve got the squad, we just
really need to make sure we knuckle
down over the next 10 weeks and long
deserved silverware back in the Mayne
Tigers footy cabinet.
What do you do outside of football?
I actually just recently graduate from a
Bachelor degree in Business
Management, so that’s a weight of the
shoulders. For casual work, I work for
Chipper Craven, I work at the Snooze at
Windsor as a delivery driver.
Is he a Task Master?
He is a micromanager, he loves it. No,
but he’s a good man, Chipper, and I
probably wouldn’t be able to keep coming
here from Redlands if I didn’t work, so I’m
very grateful.
Who is the biggest pest at the club?
Well, ooh jeez it’s tough. Zac Maclean is
the biggest pest I’ve met in my life. I’ve
never met a bloke who can drink as little
alcohol and talk as much garbage as that
man. He’s very funny, but he is the
definition of a pest.
You are renowned around the football club as
the inventor of the ‘head wobble’, where did
you get your inspiration from? Where did you
see it or did it come to you in a dream?
I have to give credit to my dear friend
Thomas Sulter, who plays over at
Redlands. I remember playing reserves
footy, and I kicked a goal from the
boundary line and given the arm raise. I
can see ‘Sults’ my mate in the stands,
doing the old head wobble, and I thought
I might adopt that. So ever since I’ve
adopted the head wobble, it’s a beautiful
thing.
Next week’s Tiger Tales will feature young
gun and future star at the Mayne Tigers, Josh
Griffiths.
