Pianist Maria McGarry, a native of Ballyhaunis is one of the most exciting musical talents in Ireland at the moment.One of only two pianists worldwide to hold the prestigious Artist Diploma in Performance from the Julliard School in NewYork, Maria also studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. Widely acclaimed as a performer in Europe andNorth America, Maria’s career has generated much media interest, most notably appearing as guest on Lyric FM’sDrivetime show, as well as extensive recital broadcasts and interviews for Lyric FM and RTÉ. Several TV appearancesinclude RTÉ’s Late Late Show, ‘Nationwide’ and Irish language station TG4.
Composer and pianist Brent Parker left New Zealand in 1956 with his teacher Frank Cooper. He taught at the DITCollege of Music in Dublin for 25 years, before retiring to Achill Island in 1998. Brent has composed many works, amongthem two piano concertos, both of which he performed as soloist with the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra in the 1970s. Hewas commissioned by John Feeley to write guitar concertinos, which he and John performed and recorded. His first pianoconcerto was played by Finghin Collins in the National Concert Hall in 1996. Many of the pieces that Brent will performwere written during his time in Mayo.

Since Declan O’Rourke released his debut album Since Kyabram to critical acclaim in 2004, he has become one of themost exciting songwriting talents in the country. The album’s first single ‘Galileo’ announced his arrival, with its lushorchestral arrangement and dreamy lyrics. Over the last few years Declan has opened live shows for such luminaries asPaul Brady, Planxty, Eddi Reader, Kila, Thin Lizzy and music’s more recent success stories of Paddy Casey, Damien Rice,Glen Hansard and Gemma Hayes.
Ballina – AnúnaSt. Michael’s Church, Saturday 23rd July at 9.00pm
Dublin born Michael McGlynn founded Anúna in 1987. The original, and current purpose of the group, is to exploreunique, beautiful and sometimes forgotten music and texts from medieval and contemporary Ireland and the Celtic landsthrough Michael’s powerful arrangements and original pieces. To date the group has released 10 albums. The nameAnúna derives from the ancient Irish name An Uaithne, which collectively describes the three ancient types of Celticmusic, Suantra (lullaby), Geantra (happy song) and Goltrai (lament). Since their departure from Riverdance – the Showin 1996 they have performed in eleven European Countries, often returning for repeat performances. One of thehighlights of Anúna’s career was in August 1999 when the group performed at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hallin the first ever Irish Prom. They were nominated for a Classical Brit Award in 2000. This one of Anúna’s onlyappearances in Ireland this year.

Multi-cultural, multi-national and multi-talented, Mozaik gathers together the significant talents of Irish music legendsAndy Irvine on vocals, bouzouki, mandolin and harmonica and Donal Lunny on bouzouki, guitar, bodhrán and backingvocals, as well as Dutchman Rens Van Der Zalm on guitar, American Bruce Molsky on fiddle and banjo, and BulgarianNikola Parov on Kaval and the Gadulka.
A group of friends who got together in 2002 to tour Australia (where they recorded a live album at The Powerhousevenue in Brisbane), Mozaik combine Irish folk and traditional music with Eastern European styles, as well as Americanold-time music.
Louisburgh – The Camerata Swing BandLouisburgh Parish Hall, Saturday 30th July at 9.00pm
The Camerata Swing Band was established in 2003, after accepting an invitation from the Queen's University of BelfastFoundation to perform George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' with the internationally renowned pianist Barry Douglasand the orchestra of Camerata Ireland. In April of next year, the band will headline the opening gala concert of the 2006Ludwig Van Beethoven Festival in Warsaw, Poland. The Camerata Swing Band players are drawn from top Northern Irishjazz musicians and the Ulster Orchestra Jazz Ensemble.
Castlebar – Bollywood Brass BandMarket Square, Saturday 2nd July at 2.00pm
The Bollywood Brass Band was formed in 1992 to perform with the Shyam Brass Band from Jabalpur, India, at theInternational Festival of Street Music in London. Since then they have created a uniquely London blend of Hindi film hits,Bhangra rhythms and brass arrangements, with influences from jazz, other world musics, and the thriving UK danceremix scene. The band is made up of 10 musicians, playing sax, trumpet, trombone, sousaphone, snare and brass drums.This is an open-air event so booking not required.
Charlestown – The Rough Deal String BandThe Town Hall Arts Centre, Thursday 7th July at 8.00pm
The Rough Deal String Band is Bill Whelan (5-string banjo), Tim Rogers (fiddle and vocals) and Ben Keogh, (guitar andvocals). Playing a mix of Appalachian, Cajun, traditional American, Old-time country music and cowboy ‘prairie’ songswith an authentic charming old-timey sound, they have released three well-received albums. They regularly play at musicfestivals in Ireland and England. Based in Dublin, the Rough Deal String Band play a weekly session at the CobblestoneBar.

Pauline Scanlon comes from a family of singers and musicians in Dingle, Co. Kerry. After making her mark as vocalistwith Sharon Shannon’s band, Pauline released her debut album, the critically acclaimed Red Colour Sun. Featuring anumber of original songs – co-written by Scanlon and Lúnasa guitarist Donogh Hennessey – alongside stirringinterpretations of material by Willie Nelson, Peggy Seeger, and Don McLean, as well as a few traditional songs, the recordsums up the many sides of Pauline Scanlon.
Joining Pauline in Achill will be Donogh Hennessy, guitarist with celebrated Irish band Lúnasa. Pauline and Donogh hopeto release their debut album as a duo later this year.

This widely renowned group has built an enthusiastic following amongst audiences and music critics alike, performing atcountless prestigious venues both at home and abroad. Their unique sound of tango, gypsy and French musette will takeyou on a captivating journey from Parisian cafés to the exotic Far East.
Inishturk – Liz and Yvonne KaneCommunity Centre, Saturday 16th July at 8.30pm
Together Liz and Yvonne Kane create a highly exciting and vibrant sound. These sisters come from Dawros on theoutskirts of Letterfrack, a village in Connemara , Galway. With a musical tradition on both sides of the family, it was onlynatural for the girls to play music. In 1992, Liz won the Fiddler of Dooney in Sligo and went on to win the All-Irelandsenior fiddle and duet title as well as the Fiddler of Oriel in 1995. She returned to Monaghan the following year andregained the Fiddler of Oriel title.
Liz studied music at University College Cork and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree and a Higher Diploma inEducation. Yvonne moved to Galway and began playing music fulltime. After finishing in Cork, Liz returned to Galwayand they both shared a house with musician, Sharon Shannon. The following year, they joined her band as part of'Sharon Shannon and The Woodchoppers'. For the next three years, the band took them all over the world to promotethe release of the album 'The Diamond Mountain Sessions'.
Ballyhaunis – Brent Parker, Iain King and Maria McGarryThe Friary, Wednesday 20th July at 8.00pm
After completing his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, Iain King was appointed First Violinin the Philharmonic Orchestra and then Assistant Leader of the English Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his classicalcareer, Iain has worked on over six hundred commercial recordings, including film and TV soundtracks and poprecordings. In 2000 he and his Mayo-born wife moved to Ireland with their daughter. They now live outside Ballina.
