INDIALANTIC FIRE RESCUE

Greetings to all Businesses and Residents.

You will be seeing our firefighters conducting our annualfire hydrant inspections beginning soon. Theseinspections require us to fully open each hydrant and flowwater from them. We conduct our inspections in themorning prior to 12:00 noon and in coordination with theCity of Melbourne Water Department. If you experiencecloudy water we ask that you attempt to flow water from asink or outside spigot for a few minutes in a effot to clearthe disturbed silt. If the water does not clear up, call 321-608-5133 or 321-608-5130, Mon.-Fri. 7:30 a.m. – 4:00p.m. or 321-255-4622 all other times, and report the watercondition to the Melbourne Water Department.Melbourne will send a crew out to flush the water lines inyour area in order to clear the cloudy water.

We continue to urge everyone to have smoke detectorsthroughout your home and that you insure they aremaintained. A new study was released recently thatshowed that thirty years ago a resident had approximately17 minutes to evacuate their home from the time a firestarted until the house was untenable. This same studynow reports that due to the many plastics and syntheticmaterials used in home furnishings, residents now onlyhave three to four minutes to safely evacuate. The speedat which fires involving synthetics and plastics spread ismuch greater and the smoke that these materials put off ismuch more caustic.

The National Fire Protection Administration explains thatwhen the synthetic materials burn, they produce extremelydangerous substances that replace the oxygen in theatmosphere. Carbon monoxide is one well knowsubstance that can be very dangerous even in smallamounts. Plastics release hydrogen cyanide when burningwhich interferes with cellular oxygenation.

The need for smoke detectors cannot be overstated. Withthe materials found in your home today, it is extremelyimportant that you are able to detect a fire in its earlieststage.
