SettingThe Glade is where all of the Gladers live, eat, and sleep. The Glade's cut into four sections. Gardens, Blood House, Homestead, and DeadHeads. The Gardens are located in the northeast corner. It is where they grow crops. In the southeast corner is the Blood House. In the Blood House they raise and slaughter animals. The Homesteads is where some of the Gladers sleep, but most just sleep outside. In the southwest corner is the Deadheads covered in thick woods. In the back part of the corner are graveyard's. Other then that it is just a place to sit, rest, and hang out. Located exactly in the middle is the box. The box is what new people and supplies get delivered in. It doesn't rain often in the Glade. Which means they can't get their water supply from rain. Their water's pumped in through pipes in the ground. Every morning huge doors open the glade to the outside which is the maze and at night the doors close.

Thomas

Thomas is confused and is unknown as of why he was brought to the Glade. Although Thomas has no memory of his life, the Glade feels familiar to him. He feels as if he is somehow connected to Teresa in some way. Thomas is very adventurous, courageous, brave, and likes to know all the details of any situation. Thomas is a major character, a protagonist, and is a dynamic character. Thomas is a dynamic character because he teaches himself new strategies when trying to escape the maze.

Thomas is sixteen, has brown hair, and is around five foot nine.

GrieversPart animal, part machine the grievers body

resembles a gigantic slug, sparsely covered in hair and glistens with slime, grotesquely pulsating in and out as it breaths. It has no distinguishable head or tail, but front to end it is at least six feet long and four feet thick. Every ten to fifteen seconds, sharp metal spikes pops through its bulbous flesh and the whole creature abruptly curls into a ball and spins forward. Then it will settle, seeming to gather its bearings, the spikes recede back through its moist skin with a sick slurping sound. There are several randomly placed mechanical arms stuck out here and there, each one with a different purpose. A few have bright lights attached to them. Others had long, mechanical needles. Some have three-fingered claws that clasp and unclasp for no apparent reason. When the creature rolls, the arms fold and manoeuvre to avoid being crushed. When the Griever rolls, it makes a metallic whirring sound, like the spinning blade of a saw. When the creature sits still it makes a deathly moaning sound. The grievers are major characters, a antagonist, and is static character.The grievers are the antagonist because they are the creatures trying to kill the good guys.

TeresaTeresa was the first girl

ever to have entered the glade. Thomas thought he recognized her when she first arrived out of the box. She is very mysterious and bright. Teresa cares about others and wants to stay strong. She has a telepathic power and can communicate to Thomas through her thoughts. Teresa is a major character,a protagonist, and a static character. She is a static character because throughout the whole book she didn’t seem more or less outgoing or talkative.

Teresa is about fifteen or sixteen, has tar black hair, pale white skin, blue eyes, and is around five and a half feet.

Minho

C

Minho is the keeper of the runners. Minho takes Thomas and teaches him how to be a runner. Minho is very confident and brave. He likes to help others in sticky situations. He is a major character, a protagonist, and a static character. Minho is a static character because throughout the whole book he very courageous and never is scared to fight something he wants or believes in.

Minho has short brown hair and is very strong.

ChuckChuck is very annoying and likes to know as much as he can. He wants to have friends, but most of all he wants to have a mom and dad. Thomas promised Chuck that he would get him out of the maze and help him find his parents. If they couldn’t find his parents he would help him find a new home. Chuck is major character,a protagonist, and a dynamic character. He is a dynamic character because at the beginning of the book he was very shy and hesitant. By the end of the book when the Gladers went to go fight the grievers he was very brave and confident.

Chuch is 12 or 13, has blue eyes, and brown hair

“A twisted, pale figure writhing in agony, chest bare and hideous. Tight, rigid cords of sickly green veins webbed across the boy’s body and limbs, like ropes under his skin. Purplish bruises covered the kid, red hives, bloody scratches. His eyes bulged, darting back and forth.”

Foreshadowing

When Thomas first arrived a boy said to him “Ain’t no ticket back, bro.” when Thomas didn’t know you couldn’t escape.

Simile:Pg. 124.- “The red light of its eye was like a little sun, too bright to looka t directly.”

Personification:Pg. 5- “A few trees surronded it, their roots like gnarled hands digging into the rock floor for food.Pg. 5- “A large grove of trees filled the final corner; the closest ones looked crippled and close to dying.”

Rising Action

I think the rising action is when things start to escalate and lead up to the climax. In this book I think the rising action is when Teresa stated, "I just triggered the ending". Once this happened everything started to fall apart inside the Glade. The sky turned gray, the walls didn't close, and nothing was getting delivered in the box. People were worrying and frantic about what was upon them. P

ClimaxI think the climax is when things are at their highest point or when the action starts to begin. I think the Climax in this book is when when they figured out the code to enter into the computer to escape.The only way to get to the computer room is if you get through the grievers and jump off the cliff into the griever hole. By comparing sections to sections from the maps they came up with a code. "Float, Catch, Bleed, Death, Stiff, Push” to enter into the computer. Also, when Thomas purposely got stung by a griever to go through the changing to remember things. P

Falling ActionThe falling action is usually when things are beginning to be resolved and end. The falling in this book is when most of the kids escape the maze and jump through the griever hole into the computer room. After they enter the code and push the button they get released into a laboratory room when the creators are watching them. A woman comes out with Gally. Gally attempts to through a knife at Thomas, but Chuck jumps in the way and takes the hit for Thomas. Minutes later Chuck dies. Abruptly, a couple of masked people come in and shoot the woman down. They direct all of the Gladers out a door and onto a bus. They soon tell the Gladers that they were being used as a test and were orphans. Also, the “The Flare” was when the sun gave off to much heat and burned a lot of the Earth and also a sickness was developed. P

ConflictsMan vs. Man- When Thomas was in the graveyard, Ben came out of know where when he was sick and leaped at Thomas. Just in time Alby shot him in the cheek with an arrow.

Man vs. Nature- The sky turned gray and all the animals were dying because they weren’t getting the nutrients they needed from the sunlight.

Man vs. Society- When most of the Gladers went into the maze and fought all the grievers so Thomas and Teresa could get into the Computer room to enter the code in. C

ThemeThe theme of this story is Lost Worlds. I think the theme of a story is what the book overall was about. I think the theme of this story is lost world because we don’t know where the Glade or the maze was actually located. We know that it wasn’t on another planet because when they got out of the laboratory they were on Earth.

Resolution

The resolution is when everything is solved. The resolution in this book is when they exit out of the griever hole and find themselves in a big laboratory room. Masked people guide them out of a room and onto a bus. They take them somewhere where they can sleep and eat.
