Having students reflect upon and discuss what they have learned this year, the new friends they have made, and even the challenges they have faced and overcome can help them to recognize their many accomplishments. Everyone has faced a challenge or two over the course of the school year. Help your child to recognize these difficult times and think about what he/she did to face the challenge and come out stronger. This helps our students to build resiliency and realize that even when they’re in a difficult situation, they have strategies (i.e., ask an adult for help, talk to a peer, read over the question, etc.) to solve the problem. Often times, we simply move on to the next task, without realizing all of the great things we have done to get to this point. Throughout the month of June, celebrate all that your children have learned in academic areas, but also in social and emotional areas. One way to continue with this momentum is to consider ways to keep your children engaged in learning throughout the summer. Whether you are taking a family vacation, going to the cottage, or staying home, there are many things you can do to continue learning through the summer. Cooking at any age integrates life skills with real-life math skills. Administrators' Message It is hard to believe that June has begun and our year is approaching its

Congratulations

Mme Biglands!

It is with bittersweet emotion that we

at Mazo for 16 years and has taught for

over 35 years. Mme Biglands has

Grade 8 Graduation

This year’s Graduation ceremony will be held on Wednesday June 28, at 5:30 pm in the gymnasium at Mazo. Afterwards, the student dinner and dance will begin at approximately 7:00 pm at the York Region Police Association Shed.

Thursday, June 29th, 2017 Early Dismissal

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June 29, 2017, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 29, 2017 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:00 am. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

RECYLCLING POP TABS We are collecting pop tabs for the aluminum recycling program, so send them in with your child by Monday June 5, 2017!

Les vedettes du diabète

We would like to thank everyone who supported

“Team Teagan” and our Vedettes du Diabète over

the past few weeks by purchasing a bracelet.

Wear your purple bracelet proudly. Thank you for

helping researchers find a cure for Type 1

diabetes.

Spring has finally sprung and all around us, we marvel in the

wonders of Mother Nature. The trees are blooming, the

flowers are blossoming and our butterfly garden is beginning

to take shape. Students in various grades have been busy at

work cleaning up the garden after a very long winter. Our

student-leaders in MEC (Mazo Environment Club) have been

conducting energy and waste audits, making announcements

about reducing our consumption of non-renewable resources,

and sharing their work with representatives from the Board.

Let’s all do our part to take care of the environment … It’s the

only one we’ve got!

PIZZA REMINDER Just a reminder that there is no guarantee that extra pizza slices will be available to purchase on Pizza days. Be sure to send your child to school with a lunch.

Congratulations to our young artists, Cinzia P., Arya R., and Laurel M.,

whose artwork will be featured in the York Region District School Board’s Holidays

& Observances calendar for the upcoming school year. Félicitations!

Our Scholastic Book Fair in May was a tremendous success. The school library has received almost $3800 to purchase additional resources, books, and learning materials for the library. Thank you to our volunteers, Mme Baptista, Mme Park and Mme Madeley’s mom, as well as to all of our families for your continued support.

Please note that the last day to return any library materials will be Friday June 16th, 2017. If you have lost or damaged library materials (i.e., books, DVDs, audio books, etc.), please let Mme Madeley know as there may be a fee to replace the item for next school year. After June 16, the library will remain open, but students will not be checking out materials.

AreaTrack and Field The Area Track and Field Meet will be taking place on June 13th for grade 4, 5, and 6 students and June 14th for grade 7 and 8 students. The meet will be held at the Stouffville Arena on 9th Line. The Regional Track and Field Meet will be held

on June 21st, also at Stouffville Arena.

Badminton

Our Intermediate Badminton team was extremely successful this year at the Area tournament. One of our boys’ doubles

team, Eric G. and Allan B., won second place and continued on to the Regional tournament. Congratulations to all teams

and a special ‘merci’ to Mme Duquette who coached the team again this year!

Medications Families are asked to claim any medication that has been left with the office during the last week of school.

Epi-pens will need to remain at school until Thursday, June 29th. Medicine left at school after this date will be appropriately discarded.

LUNCH ASSISTANTS ARE NEEDED FOR SEPTEMBER 2017

We are in need of Lunch Assistants for the 2017/2018 school year. This can be a paid or volunteer position from 11:45 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. We are looking for people who can work anywhere from 1 to 5 days per week.

LOST AND FOUND Students and families are encouraged to look through the Lost and Found bin to claim any of their belongings, before the end of the year. We have a number of coats, sweaters, mittens, hats, and other gear that we would like to see returned to their owners. Smaller pieces, such as jewelry and glasses are kept in the office.

Message from our Trustee

As we near the end of the school year, I want to thank you for all that you do to strengthen our schools and communities. This is a good time to celebrate your child’s achievements over the past year.

One of our goals in the Trustees’ Multi-Year Plan is to “continuously increase student achievement and well-being through a culture and caring and learning.” That includes a culture that emphasizes engagement and positive relationships among all the members of the school community – students, staff members, families and community members.

You, as parents/guardians, are our most important partners when it comes to education. The support you have provided to your child throughout this past school year will help to strengthen our schools and make a difference to your child’s learning.

I encourage you to continue engaging your child in learning throughout the summer, and to help them to see the connections between what they are learning in school and the world around them. There are so many opportunities to do this over the summer, whether that’s planning a budget with your child, enjoying the natural beauty in York Region, reading a book or visiting local sites. Whatever your plans are this summer, I wish you all a successful end to the school year, and a safe and enjoyable summer.

PLEASE LEAVE THE FLIP FLOPS FOR THE BEACH! While flip flops are great for the beach, they ARE NOT safe footwear for school. Be sure that your child has safe footwear for school – running shoes, sandals that have straps that can be secured to the foot, etc.

Summer is coming … how can you keep

your child learning?? Summer is a time for relaxing and having fun. It can also be a very long time to go without reading, writing or reviewing math skills. Many students attend the York Region Summer Institute or summer camp in French or in English. Some parents have found the “Learning Advantage Program” useful. These workbooks are one resource to prepare your child for the next grade. Books are available in English and in French (“En route vers le succès”), and we will have a few copies in the office for your reference. Order forms will be sent home in the next few weeks and will be due by June 8th (cash or cheque payment – payable to Learning Advantage).

Please visit www.learningadvantage.ca or further information and a tour of the books.
