Progress starts with one step. The Econic concept.

Low-entry and health and safety regulations.The low-entry concept means that there are only two steps into the cab, making getting in and out much easier and safer than in virtually any other commercial vehicle. On a busy working day, there‘s therefore a lot less climbing up and down involved with the Econic than with other trucks. The full air suspension with a lifting and lowering function on all axles is also better for the back and joints. The benefits of this concept show how seriously the Econic takes work safety.

The load-carrying capacity of a truck, the manoeuvrability of a van. With ergonomics and safety that few other commercial vehicles can match, the Econic is in a class of its own. Safety concept.The Econic meets other road users such as pedestrians and cyclists at eye level. The low seating position of the driver and the broad expanses of window in the cab, together with additional safety assistance systems, ensure that both the road and the pavements are clearly visible in all directions – a major advantage over conventional trucks, especially in inner-city areas and tight situations. The driver is given as much support as possible, thus helping to improve safety in road traffic.

Economy and environmental compatibility.The chassis design provides very good body-mounting features. Thanks to the different variants and body options available, it is perfectly suited to a wide range of tasks. The combination of powerful yet low-pollutant and particularly quiet diesel and gas engines with the convenient Allison automatic transmission with new FuelSense® technology is able to deliver the right performance in any driving and working situation.

Getting into most trucks is difficult. That‘s not the case with the Econic. The pneumatic full-length glass folding door with intuitive opening mechanism opens at the touch of a button, presenting one comfortable step up to the vehicle interior. A simplification measure which should not be underestimated in today‘s difficult working world: it reduces the risk of accidents and injuries. Thanks to the convenient through-cab access, both co-driver and driver can enter and exit the vehicle through the inwards-opening folding door on the safe side of the vehicle away from the traffic. There‘s no jumping out of the cab with the Econic. The low-entry concept is a real benefit in short-radius distribution transport. This concept enhances workplace safety, enables efficient work processes and helps to keep the work team fit.

Providing optimum working conditions: the perfect interior layout.

No matter how you plan to deploy the Econic, its interior shows how well intelligent design can increase productivity. All functions are subordinated to one objective: a smooth-running working day. The instruments, the steering wheel with multifunction buttons, the clear layout of the dashboard with integrat-ed cup holders and the arrangement of the seats have all been designed to be intuitive and practically oriented. The powerful premium engine brake is activat-ed with ease using the right-hand steering-column lever. An instrument cluster displays all the important vehicle information on a state-of-the-art TFT screen. Pre-wiring is also available for the installation of an additional screen to display images from the body-mounted cameras (if fitted). The CD radio has a Bluetooth hands-free system, while the optional navigation system provides the driver with up-to-the-minute traffic information.

The air conditioning system, together with the electric roller sunblind, ensures a comfortable cab climate whatever the weather. A further contri-bution to a relaxed working atmosphere is the enhanced insulation of the engine tunnel and cab floor, which reduces internal noise and effectively counters ex-treme outside temperatures. Numerous stowage compartments and facilities in the cab provide ample storage space. These details show that the Econic has been designed with the needs of its crew of up to four members in mind.

The new Econic is not just one of the most ergonomic commercial purpose vehicles there is, it‘s one of the safest too. The low seating position of the driver and the panoramic cab window, along with the fully glazed folding door and the mirror system, give maximum visibility all the way round the vehicle. In addition, the inward-folding door takes up no additional road space and protects both crew members and other road users. Many important and state-of-the-art Mercedes-Benz safety assistance systems are included as standard: the highly effective emergency braking system Active Brake Assist can initiate braking if necessary and so minimise or prevent the risk of a collision with other vehicles on the road ahead. Should the vehicle inadvertently leave its lane, Lane Keeping Assist will emit an audible signal to warn the driver. The proximity-controlled cruise control system, available as an option, regulates the distance to the vehicle in front and automatically adjusts the speed, while the optional blind-spot camera system scans the whole of the areas that are in the driver‘s blind spot, depending on the driving situation, and gives the driver a view of these areas via a monitor.

Thanks to the generously proportioned panoramic windows and the many assistance systems on board, drivers always have a good view of the entire surrounding area. It all adds up to make the Econic truly exemplary in terms of safety.

Operating principle

At forward speeds of up to 10 km/h the image from the front camera is shown as a substitute for the front bumper-view mirror.

If the vehicle is turning off with the indicator activated, the screen will show the view to the side or, beyond a certain defined steering angle and at speeds up to 20 km/h, also the images from the front camera.

If the driver so wishes, there is a manual function that allows each area monitored to be shown individually in turn while the vehicle is stationary (with the brakes activated) or at speeds of up to 10 km/h.

Reversing As soon as reverse gear is engaged, the screen switches to show the area monitored by the rear camera and the area to each side.

At the heart of economic efficiency.Perfectly coordinated drive technologies with Euro VI.

The Mercedes-Benz BlueTec 6 engines combine future viability with high levels of efficiency and environmental compatibility. The state-of-the art 6-cylinder diesel engines are available for the Econic with an entry-level output of 220 kW (299 hp) at 2,200 rpm and maximum torque of 1,200 Nm between 1,200 and 1,600 rpm, and with a top-level output of 260 kW (354 hp) at 2,200 rpm and maximum torque of 1,400 Nm within a rated engine speed range of 1,200 - 1,600 rpm.

The 6-cylinder gas engine based on this latest engine series, with an output of 222 kW (302 hp) at 2,000 rpm and peak torque of 1,200 Nm, impresses with its exceptionally low CO2 and noise emissions and a virtual absence of particulate and fine particle emissions. Such performance comes cour-tesy of a new combustion and exhaust gas aftertreatment strategy that does away with the need for an SCR catalytic converter, a particulate filter or the additive AdBlue.

The two engine variants that have already been proven in volume production are not only economical and powerful, but also meet the stringent Euro 6 emissions standard. This involves a reduction of 50 % in diesel particulates and of 90 % in nitrogen oxide emissions compared with Euro 5.

The Allison 6-speed automatic transmission with new FuelSense® technology and optional retarder ensures the correct transmission of power. In combination with the state-of-the-art BlueTec 6 engines, the Allison automatic transmission performs well, even at low speed. Torque converter, lock-up clutch, close-ratio forward gears with overdrive and touch-key gearshift improve the power supply and create the best requirements for stress-free and safe driving.

Two cab versions, chassis with four different types of axle and various wheelbases from 3,450 to 5,700 mm, plus a maximum permissible gross vehicle weight of 18 t to 26 t – whether in municipal and inner-city use, as an air-field or firefighting vehicle or in short-radius distribution operations – the advantages of the low-entry concept from Mercedes-Benz are exploited to the full. The diverse range of available versions, the good body-mounting ability of the low frame and the layout of the vehicle‘s major assemblies make all sorts of body variants possible. Specially customised vehicle models, such as a 32 t weight variant, are available from Mercedes-Benz Custom Tailored Trucks (CTT), your partner for vehicle conversions.

Mercedes-Benz Wörth plant: the Mercedes-Benz Econic is designed and manufactured at the world's largest truck production plant. The engines come from the Mercedes-Benz engine plant in Mannheim.

Produced at Wörth, Germany, in the world‘s largest truck assembly plant, the Econic complies with the high quality standards of the commercial vehicle sector. Our customised financial services make your accounting more flexible. Financing.Flexible offers to widen your financial scope. For instance, seasonal payment financing, which means that you pay more in busy months and less in quiet months, or final pay-ment financing which has a higher final payment so that the monthly rates are lower, or Plus3 financing. At the end of the contractual period, you can then decide whether to sell your Econic and make the final payment or whether to return the vehicle to your dealer at the price guaranteed in your contract1. You can also keep your Econic by making the final payment. Make the most of taking a follow-up financing and repay the final payment in reasonable monthly payments.
