MADE TO MATCH YOUR PACKAGING
The success of brand packaging depends on responding to change. For example, the environmental issues the world faces call for a sustainable solution: optimising and lightening the packaging material. Rising to the challenge, Metsä Board’s lightweight folding boxboards offer you competitive advantages in terms of ecology as well as cost-efficiency.
Packaging also needs to reflect consumer trends such as the demand for convenient, healthy and environmentally friendly products. Truly fit-for-purpose, our boards help you achieve your goals – to create attractive and effective packaging solutions, reduce costs, save time and enhance sustainability.
GET AN EDGE WITH THE WORLD’S MOST EFFICIENT BOARDS
LIGHTWEIGHTING FOR BETTER YIELD
Metsä Board has pioneered lightweighting – achieving excellent strength and printability at low basis weights. Based on fresh forest fibres, a strong tradition of R&D, breakthroughs in BCTMP and state-of-the-art mill technology, the development of ever-lighter boards continues.
Metsä Board’s lightweight boards yield significantly more cartons per tonne and reduce customers’ total costs without compromising quality. Despite their lightness, the boards have the stiffness and the quality consist-ency to run smoothly and reliably in all production processes. This saves time, money and trouble.
SUSTAINABILITY THROUGHOUT THE PACKAGING CHAIN
As a packaging material, Metsä Board’s cartonboards have a notably small carbon footprint. Through their light weight, the boards further lessen envi-ronmental impacts, as they consume less energy and raw material, decrease transport weights and produce less waste. They decrease waste also by protect-ing the product and ensuring that it stays intact through the logistic chain.

ENSURE SAFETY WITH FRESH FOREST FIBRES
TRUST THROUGH PURITY AND TRACEABILITY
Product safety is vital, especially in food packaging. In its boards, Metsä Board only uses fresh forest fibres, which are pure by nature. Our products do not contain harmful compounds, such as mineral oils. All our raw materials – wood, pulp and chemicals – are of known origin, traceable and adherent to the relevant standards, and our mills have certified manage-ment systems to ensure product safety.
Thanks to the fresh forest fibres, our boards are safe for food packaging without requiring a barrier against pollutants or cross-contamination from transport packaging. Eliminating the unnecessary barrier reduces carbon footprint and costs, increases material efficiency, makes recycling easier, and helps reach waste reduction targets.
WOOD FROM SUSTAINABLY MANAGED FORESTS
All the wood Metsä Board uses is sourced from sustainably managed Nordic forests. Most of it comes from forests owned by Metsäliitto Cooperative’s members and more than 80% from certified forests.
We always know the origin of the wood that we use. All Metsä Board’s mills have both PEFCTM and FSC® Chain of Custody certifications as well as FSC Controlled Wood status.. All our products fulfill the requirements of the EU Timber Regulation and the U.S. Lacey Act.
We are self-sufficient in fibre raw materials and co-operate closely to further advance the Metsä Group expertise in pulp and its optimal use in board production.
RENEWABLE RAW MATERIALS USED RESPONSIBLY
Fresh forest fibres are a renewable, recyclable and biodegradable raw material, which we apply within Metsä Group efficiently and responsibly, using wood to the full and providing by-products for other industrial branches. Fresh forest fibres are also needed to maintain the balance in the recycling process.
RENEWABLE ENERGY AND OPTIMISED EFFICIENCY
Metsä Board is a major user of biofuels and a large producer of bioenergy. Wood-based fuels account for 55% of the energy consumed by Metsä Board’s mills. We aim to further increase the already high share of biofuels in our production.
All Metsä Board folding boxboard production units have Energy Management Systems certified according to ISO 50001. We continuously seek means to further improve our energy efficiency.
Made from pure fresh forest fibres, all Metsä Board cartonboards are safe for consumers and the environment, which helps our customers build and maintain brand reliability. The odour and taint neutrality of our boards meets the high sensory requirements of food packaging. We see combining an understanding of the whole value chain with R&D knowledge as the key to product safety. Metsä Board sources its wood from sustainably managed forests and uses it responsibly. Our paperboard mills get most of their energy from renewable sources and continuously seek to further improve their energy efficiency.
