Elite Faculty. To ensure that the MBA degree at TUJ meets the same quality standards as at main campus, all faculty are either from the Fox School itself or are approved by the Fox School. Chosen both for their academic expertise and practical experience, our distinguished faculty are noted for delivering comprehensive, cutting-edge knowledge about business, management, and industry.

World Class. The Fox School’s MBA programs are ranked among the best in the world by the Financial Times and other organizations, based upon such factors as student satisfaction, instructor qualifications, salaries, and career progress. The TUJ MBA has been officially recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

Flexible Scheduling. Students can earn an MBA degree at their own pace, taking from two to four years to complete the degree. To accommodate students’ busy schedules and help them maintain a work-life balance while studying, classes typically meet on Saturdays in five-week modules. Intensive two-week modules may also be offered.

Convenient Admissions.

With multiple entry points throughout the year, students do not need to wait for the next academic year to begin working on their MBA degree. Applications are processed year-round, and students can choose either to apply for immediate matriculation or, through TUJ’s START program (See page 4), to take up to three courses before formally applying for admission. In addition, for experienced and qualified executives, GMAT waivers may be available.

Large Alumni Network. MBA degree holders from TUJ join both the TUJ network of over 3,000 alumni and more than 50,000 Fox School alumni worldwide. Among our alumni are many CEOs and senior executives of Japanese, American, and other corporations.

Financial Assistance. About Temple University and the Fox School

Founded in 1884, Temple University is a comprehensive public research university with its main campus located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. With more than 34,000 students, it is one of America’s largest universities. Temple offers degree programs in about 130 bachelor’s degree areas, 110 master’s degree areas, 50 doctoral degree areas, and 5 first professional degree areas (law, dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, and podiatric medicine). It is the 26th largest university in the United States, and the 6th largest provider of professional education in the U.S. Established in 1918, the Fox School of Business and Management has a strong commitment to global education. The school’s Institute of Global Management Studies is a premier center of international business education and research. In addition to MBA, M.A., and Ph.D. programs in Philadelphia, the school runs an International MBA Program in Paris, Mumbai, Philadelphia, Shanghai, and Tokyo and an undergraduate international business forum in Rome. With more than 6,000 students, 154 full-time faculty, and over 50,000 alumni, the Fox School is the largest, most comprehensive business school in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and among the largest in the world.

I joined Temple’s Fox School of Business six years ago after a long career in industry managing technology organizations. I was particularly interested in the values of the School because I believe they are critical to the success of businesses. The values recognize the importance of globalization, the linkage between technology and business, entrepreneurship and innovation.Teaching in the TUJ MBA program has been a great opportunity to experience these values first hand. I believe that graduate classes should involve a two way exchange of ideas, leveraging the experiences of students as well as faculty. Our TUJ MBA students have business responsibilities which cross country boundaries, understand the issues associated with the effective use of technology in business, and are change agents in both large and small companies. I have been consistently impressed by the quality of the resulting discussions in our classes. This is what graduate school should be like. Our students leave the program with enhanced competencies which are critical to success in the new century.

Flexibility The MBA program with an executive concentration at TUJ is comprised of 16 courses (48 credits), each

focusing on a specific functional area or facet of strategic management. All courses emphasize knowledge

acquisition and skill development to prepare those whose seek senior management or executive-level

positions. Students are graded on participation, assignments, presentations, and exams. Classes are

typically divided into small, often cross-cultural, project teams that work together on problem sets and

presentations. Along the way, students gain both “hard” and “soft” skills that fit together like computer

hardware and software. Hard skills are acquired through courses such as finance, accounting, statistics,

marketing, and corporate strategy where the ability to collect and analyze data is essential to effective

decision-making. Soft skills include the ability to manage time, present ideas, negotiate and manage

conflict in a constructive manner, think creatively, and lead a multicultural team and alternatively, be a

contributing team member. Students have from two to four years to earn the 48 credits necessary to

graduate. No thesis is required.

International focus An MBA degree from TUJ prepares students for the challenges of working in dynamic, cross-cultural business environments. This is achieved through a curriculum that draws on theory and case studies from various countries; through the use of highly qualified faculty who have academic, professional, and personal experience in management practices around the world; and through leveraging the multinational perspectives of the students themselves.

Alumni network

Graduates of our program join a network of over 3,000 TUJ alumni and over 50,000 alumni worldwide. This extraordinary, international network of professionals, working in a variety of corporate settings, from venture capital start-ups to major multinational corporations, becomes a major competitive asset for program alumni.

Cross-industry perspectives

Our students study with people with a myriad of business backgrounds, from IT to M&A to finance and beyond. Interacting with classmates with differing perspectives helps prepare students to be successful in the ever-changing global business environment. Throughout the program, students work with teammates on projects, problem sets, and presentations. This mirrors the real-world situation faced by managers and makes the most of the diversity and experiences of fellow students. Students also gain the communication and interpersonal skills required to thrive in an international environment. Classmates invariably form a support network to help each other meet the challenges of balancing work and family while pursuing an MBA.

Year-round admissionsTUJ offers several entry points throughout the year, so there is no need to wait for the next academic year to start studying. Students can enter the program whenever it is most convenient for them.

GMAT waivers for experienced professionalsAll prospective students are encouraged to take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) in support of their application for admission. However, candidates with significant management experience may petition for a waiver of the GMAT requirement. All candidates may begin studying without taking the GMAT through the TUJ START program.

Flexible program to fit busy work schedulesIn 1996, TUJ and the Fox School were the first to offer an MBA degree in Japan that meets the educational needs of busy working professionals. Recent enhancements give the program at TUJ even greater flexibility, while maintaining its high academic standards. Through TUJ, students enroll at a fully accredited business school and work toward an American MBA degree without leaving Tokyo. Alternatively, students can take just a few selected courses to improve their skills in certain disciplines. Because our classes are held on Saturdays, students can continue to advance their careers while studying at TUJ.

Modular course schedule To earn an MBA at TUJ, students must complete 16 courses. The standard course format consists of classes over five consecutive Saturdays. That gives students sufficient time to fully master the materials and ample opportunities during the week to have study sessions with classmates and to consult with the professors (who stay in Tokyo for the full five weeks, unlike some other programs in which the professors fly in and out of Japan just to teach). It also means that Sundays are always free. There are eight course modules per year, with one or more weeks off between each module. In addition, intensive one-week and two-week courses, with classes on weekday evenings and weekends, are occasionally offered during the year.

Study at your own paceOur students need not follow a rigid cohort system. Instead, they can study at a pace that fits their work, travel, family, and personal schedules. So, for example, if a student has to be out of town for an extended business trip, he or she can take a break from studies and rejoin the program later. With this flexible format, students can graduate in as fast as two years or as long as four years.

Since graduating from TUJ, my career has accelerated. I have assumed a new position and more responsibility. I am convinced that my experience with Temple’s able professors and fellow TUJ students helps me to communicate better globally and locally to achieve our firm’s objectives. Financial services and business in general are changing rapidly. The broad perspective that I gained at TUJ helps me anticipate and adapt to these changes.Studying at TUJ was a unique experience for me. The many views I exchanged with fellow students from a wide variety of cultures gave me a greater awareness of the role that we, as Japanese, should play in the world. The MBA program at TUJ has been very beneficial to me, and I would recommend it highly to any professionals seeking to improve themselves or their careers.

Head of Product Control Royal Bank of Scotland, Tokyo Branch

The MBA program format was perfect for me as it enabled me to increase my business skill level without interrupting my career. I’m in charge of brand management and what I learned in TUJ’s MBA program has had a direct impact on my job. In each course, there was a wide array of approaches, with active class discussions that resulted in sharing of knowledge and experiences and thus, better outcomes on our project assignments and case analyses. The decisions we made are similar to those that managers deal with in the workplace every day. I was also able to develop effective time management skills which enabled me to meet the competing demands of work, study, and family. My classmates, who were in the same circumstances, encouraged me to do my best. They also helped me to broaden my thinking by providing their points of view from different industries in which they are affiliated. I have found that the personal network which I built during the MBA program is a valuable asset.

www.tuj.ac. jp/mbaI chose TUJ because it offers an American MBA in Japan that allows participants to maintain their full-time jobs. My quest for knowledge was satisfied by experienced professors, most of whom had worked in industry before becoming academicians. Their insights, as well as the perspectives of my diverse classmates, made the classes come alive. The high level of commitment of each of my classmates was amazing and impressive, and the spirit of camaraderie that existed among participants enabled us to share freely during class discussions. Getting an MBA enabled me to take on additional responsibilities in my office. I work as an accountant for a rapidly growing business process outsourcing company, Strata Works, which provides financial, managerial and tax consulting services. The MBA has helped my career and my company.

Earning an MBA had always been one of my career objectives, but with family and work commitments I thought I had missed my chance. Once I realized I would be returning to Japan, I immediately started looking for a program that would fit my busy schedule. TUJ was the answer. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of teaching and commitment to learning displayed by the faculty in Japan and the visiting professors from the Philadelphia campus. I have been able to apply the skills, concepts, and strategic frameworks learned in class to my daily work with immediate results. I now understand business issues from a senior manager’s perspective and have already successfully proposed positive changes within my functional area. It’s a challenging program but well worth it given that I can continue working, develop my career, network with great people, and earn an American MBA in two years. I couldn’t do that anywhere else in Japan.
