Master of Business Administration In 2010 the MBA is undergoing a thorough ‘refresh’, to reposition it such that it builds on existing strengths already acknowledged within the business, student and alumni groups of our community, and exploits JCU’s unique regional location and expertise. From 2011 the following course structures will apply for new enrolments. Structure of the MBA (12 subjects): A: Core subjects (compulsory) 1. Current business issues – this subject will explore current issues using guest speakers, JCU academic expertise and develop students’ awareness of important business and community issues at the same time that it provides learning and practice in skills such as negotiation, report writing, presentation, research and etc. This subject must be done within the first semester of the program. 2. Strategy and Leadership – two key skills are developed in this subject, with case studies illustrating the implementation of sound theory and supporting decision-making. 3. Financial Foundations for Managers – as the name implies, a subject that equips non-finance people with the skills required to play an active role in the financial life of their organisation, make decisions knowing the financial impact, and assess businesses and business proposals. 4. Managing Business in a Global Context – management skills necessary for every business manager in organisations ranging from the smallest to the largest, local or beyond. 5. Capstone project – choose from a live community project, a live business plan, or a hypothetical business plan. This subject will involve bringing together all of the strands of learning in the final semester of the program integrating them into a holistic business project. B: Outer core (select any four of the following eight subjects) 1. People in Organisations. 2. Marketing Management 3. Managing globally – doing business in China 4. Economics for Managers 5. Advanced e-Security 6. Sustainable Enterprise 7. Business Law 8. Data Analysis and Decision Modelling C: Majors as below (optional); or choose electives from any of the subjects within any of the majors, or any two electives from the postgraduate subjects offered by JCU. Each major will comprise four subjects: the relevant first subject from the outer core (above) plus three others within each major area. Majors to be offered (not all available at all campuses):

Structure of the Graduate Diploma of Business Administration (8 subjects):Students should complete 8 subjects, including 4 core subjects and 4 chosen from either the outer core subjects (listed above) or the wider elective choices presented within the majors or JCU-wide postgraduate subjects.

Structure of the Graduate Certificate of Business Administration (4 subjects):Students should complete 4 subjects, including Current Business Issues and any other 3 chosen from the other core subjects (excluding the capstone project), or the outer core (listed above).
