2012-13 RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009, 2010

When it came time for Robert Morris University Director of AthleticsCraig Coleman, M.D., to name a new head coach for the men’s basketballprogram, he didn’t have to look far.

Andrew Toole was introduced as the eighth head coach in the 37-yearDivision I history at a press conference at the Charles L. Sewall Center May11, 2010, and the 2012-13 campaign is his third season as head coach of theColonials. He owns an overall record of 44-25 (.638).

Anyone familiar with the success RMU has had in recent seasons should be familiar with Toole.Named as former head coach Mike Rice’s top assistant in 2007-08, Toole spent the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons as Associate Head Coach at Robert Morris. In his first season at the helm in 2010-11, Toole continued RMU’s recent run of success, leading theColonials to an overall record of 18-14 (.563), including a mark of the 12-6 (.667) in the Northeast Con-ference. Robert Morris advanced to its third straight NEC Tournament championship game, falling shyof earning its third consecutive title before falling in overtime @ LIU Brooklyn (3/9/11), 85-82. Despite a roster that featured just one senior for the second straight year, Toole led the Colonials toan overall record of 26-11 (.703) in 2011-12, including a mark of 13-5 (.722) in the NEC that helped RobertMorris earn the No. 3 seed in the 2012 NEC Tournament. RMU advanced to its fourth straight NEC Tour-nament championship game before suffering a 90-73 setback @ LIU Brooklyn (3/7/12). The Colonials accepted a bid to the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) despitefalling short of their third NCAA Tournament appearance in the last four years and advanced to thequarterfinals thanks to road victories @ Indiana State and @ Toledo. The win over the Sycamores in thefirst round of the 2012 CIT marked RMU’s first victory in a national postseason tournament since 1983. Toole is at the helm of an RMU program that has experienced unprecedented success over the lastfive years. The Colonials own NEC records for victories over the span of three, four and five years. Since the beginning of the 2007-08 season when Toole joined the staff, Robert Morris owns an overallrecord of 117-56 (.676), with the 117 victories both a school and NEC record for a five-year span. While RMU’s overall success is apparent, the program’s accomplishments in the NEC are also clear. Over the last five years, the Colonials have posted a mark of 71-19 (.789) against league oppositionand have finished no lower than third over that span. Overall, RMU has established 132 team or indi-vidual records, with 52 of those coming under the watchful eye of Toole. Robert Morris won outright NEC regular-season titles in 2008 and 2009 and shared the champi-onship in 2010 with Quinnipiac with Toole as a member of the staff. RMU followed up its success in the regular season by becoming the first team in NEC history in 16years to win back-to-back NEC Tournament championships by earning a 52-50 win over Quinnipiac inthe 2010 NEC Tournament championship game in Hamden, Conn. In 2008, the Colonials made their first appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT),dropping an 87-81 decision to No. 1 overall seed Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. In both 2009 and 2010,RMU earned automatic berths to the NCAA Tournament thanks to winning their sixth and seventh NECTournament championships, respectively. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament as a No. 15 seed, the Colonials fell to eventual national runner-upMichigan State, 77-62, in the first round at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn.In the 2010 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris nearly upset No. 2 seed Villanova in the first round at theDunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., before falling, 73-70, in overtime. Prior to coming to Robert Morris in 2007, Toole spent the 2006-07 season as an assistant at LafayetteCollege in Easton, Pa. While an assistant with the Leopards, Toole assisted in all facets of the program, from recruiting toplayer development. He was responsible for helping recruit student-athletes that helped lead Lafayetteto the 2010 Patriot League Tournament championship game against Lehigh. Between 2004 and 2006, Toole spent two years with The Hoop Group in Neptune, N.J. He served asthe director of the Eastern Invitational Basketball Clinic, where he handled logistical management forthe nation's largest high school exposure camp. Lucky Charms - Lucky Jones showed steady improvement throughout the course of his firstcollegiate season in 2011-12, and the sophomore forward played his best basketball of theyear during the month of March. Over RMU’s final six games of the year, which includedthree contests in both the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament and the 2012 CollegeIn-sider.com Postseason Tournament, Jones averaged 10.2 points and 6.3 rebounds whileshooting 46 percent (23-for-50) from the field and producing a team-high eight steals. Jonespaced Robert Morris in rebounding in 2011-12 by pulling down an average of 6.1 per game, and he became just the second freshman in school history to eclipse 200 rebounds in a sea-son. Jones finished with 213 caroms, behind only all-time leading rebounder Anthony Dick-ens (1985-90), who posted 237 boards in his first season in 1985-86.

A Run At the Record? While sophomore forward Lucky Jones got off to a great start rebound-ing the basketball in his first season in 2011-12, redshirt senior forward Russell Johnsonwill enter his final season of eligibility with a chance to become the program’s all-time lead-ing rebounder. Johnson, who became the 16th member of the Robert Morris 500-reboundclub in 2011-12 thanks to eight boards in a 70-56 victory over in-state rival Saint Francis(Pa.) (2/11/12), finished second for the Colonials in 2011-12 with 177 rebounds in 31 games,an average of 5.7 per contest. Johnson owns 565 career caroms entering the 2012-13 seasonand is 187 rebounds shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading rebounder. Based onRMU’s 31-game regular-season schedule, Johnson would need to average 6.0 boards a con-test to eclipse the mark. Currently, former Colonials Anthony Dickens (1985-90) and TonyLee (2004-08) share the career record of 751 rebounds.

The Race to 1,000 - In addition to Russell Johnson having an opportunity in his final seasonof eligibility to make a run at becoming the program’s all-tim e leading rebounder, the red-shirt senior forward is also just 131 points shy of joining the Robert Morris 1,000-point club.Johnson enters the 2012-13 campaign with 869 points and, barring injury, will become justthe 12th player in school history to be a member of both the RMU 1,000-point and 500-re-bound clubs. While Johnson has a good shot of eclipsing 1,000 career points in 2012-13,Coron Williams also has an outside shot. The redshirt junior guard enters the year with 635career points and would need to average 11.8 points over the course of RMU’s 31-game reg-ular-season schedule to join the exclusive fratenity. If the duo accomplish the feat, theywould be the 21st and 22nd members, respectively, of the Robert Morris 1,000-point clubin school history.

Start Me Up - Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams, the only Colonial to start all 37 gamesfor Robert Morris in 2011-12, enters the 2012-13 campaign as RMU’s active leader for con-secutive starting assignments. Williams has started 42 straight games dating back to the2010-11 season, the longest streak by a Colonial since redshirt senior guard Velton Jonesstarted 70 consecutive games before having it snapped last season.

Economical MarginsThe defensive pressure that Robert Morris has employed over the last five sea-sons has allowed the program to post each of its top three totals for largest mar-gin of victory against a Northeast Conference opponent in school history. TheColonials earned a 91-38 victory over Bryant (2/3/11) at the Charles L. SewallCenter to not only establish a new school record in an NEC game but also tie theleague mark. The record was originally set when Wagner defeated Sacred Heart,116-63, on February 22, 2000. In fact, only four games in league annals have beendecided by 50 or more points, and RMU owns two of them. Robert Morris posteda 95-45 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Sewall Center, while LongIsland defeated Wagner, 127-77, February 11, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Myers-Pate then came through with athree-pointer to give the Colonials some breathing room, and RMU finished 4-for-8 at the free-throw line in the final 2:08 to seal the victory.

Robert Morris Quick FactsA Special Season - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones became the seventh differentColonial in school history to eclipse the 500-point plateau in a season in 2011-12 andfinished the year with 591 points, the second highest total in the RMU single-seasonrecord book. The total for Jones trails only Robert Morris all-time leading scorer MyronWalker (1990-94), who scored 614 points as a sophomore in 1991-92 en route to North-east Conference Player of the Year accolades. Even with his ability to score, Jones alsofinished with a team-high 167 assists in 2011-12, which ranks as the fifth highest totalin single-season history. Jones is the only Colonial in school history to own top five totalsin both points and assists in the same season.

Golden Era - While Robert Morris is in the midst of its golden era in the 37-year historyas a Division I program, an area that gets credit for that success is RMU’s ability to con-vert from beyond the arc. Redshirt junior guard Coron Williams posted a team-high 87three-pointers in 2011-12, the second highest total in the RMU single-season recordbook. Former Colonial Scott Shepard (1988-91) owns the single-season mark with 93during his first year with RMU in 1988-89. In 2011-12, Williams became the third playerin the last four years to hit at least 80 three-pointers in a season and is also the eighthdifferent Colonial in the last 11 years to post one of the top 10 single-season marks inthree-point field goals.

Dishing The Dimes - A key reason the Colonials made a push for their third NEC Tourna-ment championship in four years and a spot in the 2012 CollegeInsider.com PostseasonTournament was due to the job RMU’s two point guards, redshirt senior Velton Jonesand junior Anthony Myers-Pate, did in creating offense. In the last 19 contests of theseason, a stretch in which RMU went 14-5 (.737), the duo dished out 154 assists againstjust 81 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.90. Myers was extremely efficient, posting 66 dimes against just 23 miscues (2.87 assist-to-turnover ratio). Myers finishedthe 2011-12 campaign ranked third in the Northeast Conference in assist-to-turnoverratio (1.82), while Jones ranked fifth (1.69).

The Comeback Kids - Facing a double-digit deficit in 2011-12 didn’t seem to be a problemfor Robert Morris. In seven of their last 11 road tilts of the season the Colonials fell be-hind by double digits but came back to win four of them. In a 67-60 win @ Indiana State(3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CIT, RMU fell behind by 12 in the first half, 21-9,and faced double-digit deficits seven times in the first eight minutes of the second halfbefore roaring back for the victory. The win @ Indiana State marked the ninth time RMUhas climbed out of a double-digit deficit to earn a victory in two seasons under headcoach Andrew Toole. Included in that stretch is a 15-point deficit in the second half ofan 81-73 overtime win @ Monmouth (1/21/12).

Rockin The Chalk - Redshirt senior guard Velton Jones led Robert Morris in scoring in2011-12 with an average of 16.0 points per game, and no Colonial in school history hasshown a penchant for getting to the free-throw line better. In a 71-64 win @ No. 2 Wagner(3/4/12) in the 2012 NEC Tournament semifinals, Jones finished 14-for-16 at the charitystripe, one of 11 times on the year he visited the chalk at least 10 times. In 2011-12, Jonesestablished new RMU school records for free throws in a season (207) and career (397).He broke the career record thanks to a 5-for-7 performance at the charity stripe in a 67-60 victory @ Indiana State (3/13/12) in the first round of the 2012 CollegeInsider.comPostseason Tournament, including a 4-for-4 showing in the final 23 seconds to seal thewin. Amazingly, 35 percent (207-of-591) of the points scored in 2011-12 for Jones and31.5 percent (397-for-1,259) of his career points have come at the free-throw line.

Board Games - Part of following the formula in regard to being successful for RobertMorris over the last five seasons has been the program’s ability to crash the boards. Sincethe beginning of the 2007-08 campaign, Robert Morris owns a record of 90-15 (.857)when the Colonials are even or better in rebounding in a game, including an 86-13 (.869)mark when outrebounding their opponent. In Andrew Toole’s two seasons as head coach,Robert Morris has posted a record of 34-9 (.791) when outrebounding its opponent, in-cluding a mark of 19-5 (.792) in 2011-12. The Colonials ended the 2011-12 campaign topsin the Northeast Conference in rebounding defense, allowing an average of just 30.7 car-oms per contest.

Big Mac - Junior forward Mike McFadden hopefully showed a glimpse of what’s to comein the future in RMU’s final game of the 2011-12 season in the quarterfinals of the 2012CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. McFadden paced the Colonials in a 67-61setback @ Fairfield (3/21/12) with a career-high 20 points, converting eight of his 12shots from the floor. He also grabbed seven rebounds against the Stags, including sixoffensive boards. A transfer from Iona, McFadden became eligible to play for the Colo-nials in December of 2011, and in 27 games in 2011-12 he provided averages of 8.4 pointsand 4.3 rebounds while shooting 53.9 percent (90-for-167) from the field, which pacedColonials that scored at least 200 points on the year.

In The Clutch - You certainly could say that Robert Morris has a flair for the dramatic. In a 55-53 win @ Sacred Heart (2/23/12), redshirt senior guard Velton Jones buried athree-pointer with 0.1 seconds to play that helped give the Colonials the victory. Itmarked the second career buzzer beater for Jones, who also turned the trick in the semi-finals of the 2011 NEC Tournament in a 64-62 victory @ Quinnipiac (3/6/11). The Rock - Guard Velton Jones has been a rock for Robert Morris over the last three sea-sons, as the redshirt senior enters his final season of eligibility in 2012-13 owning thelongest active streak for games played. Jones has played in 104 straight games for RMUdating back to the 2009-10 campaign and owns 98 career starts, far and away the highestmark for a Colonial. Jones is just two starts shy of becoming the fifth player in schoolhistory to start at least 100 career games, and he needs 23 starting assignments thisyear to break the school record of 120 that is held by former Colonial Jeremy Chappell(2005-09).

Defense Wins Championships - At the heart of the resurgence of the RMU basketballprogram over the last five seasons has been defense. Despite a 67-61 setback @ Fairfield(3/21/12) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament,Robert Morris still owns a record to 89-17 (.840) since the beginning of the 2007-08campaign when holding its opponent to less than 70 points. In two seasons under headcoach Andrew Toole, the Colonials are 38-10 (.792) when turning the trick.

30-for-30 - Robert Morris made a point to attack the basket in 2011-12, and the resultswere encouraging. In a 71-64 victory @ No. 2 Wagner (3/4/12) in the semifinals of the2012 NEC Tournament, the Colonials visited the charity stripe a season-high 40 times, converting 30 (75 percent). RMU enters the 2012-13 campaign having won 36 consecu-tive games when visiting the charity stripe at least 30 times in a game. The last loss forthe Robert Morris came in the 2002 NEC Tournament, when the Colonials suffered an85-76 loss to UMBC (3/1/02) despite going 24-for-31 (77.4 percent) at the chalk.

Toole Time - Robert Morris is led by head coach Andrew Toole, who completed his seocndseason as head coach of the Colonials by leading RMU to an overall record of 26-11 in2011-12. In Toole’s 69 games on the sidelines over the last two seasons, RMU has heldits opponents to 70 points or less in 48 contests, an amazing 69.6 percent of the time.Included in those 48 contests are 22 holding its opponent to less than 60 points, withRMU owning an astounding mark of 21-1 (.955) in those games. RMU’s only loss is a 58-53 setback @ Cleveland State (11/29/10), and the Colonials have won 20 straight whenturning the trick entering the 2012-13 campaign.

Long Distance Dialing - Thanks to tying an RMU single-game record forthree-pointers with 16 in an 87-68 victory over Monmouth (3/1/12) in thequarterfinals of the 2012 Northeast Conference Tournament, the Colonialseclipsed 200 three-pointers on the year and finished the season with 240.It marks the eighth time in the last nine years that Robert Morris haseclipsed 200 three-pointers in a season. The top two sharpshooters fromlong range for RMU in 2011-12 were redshirt junior guard Coron Williamsand redshirt senior guard Velton Jones, who combined for 147 three-point-ers. That total is the second highest by an RMU tandem in school history.

Streaker - By finishing with just seven points @ Memphis (12/29/11), red-shirt junior guard Velton Jones had his streak of double figure scoringgames dating back to the 2010-11 campaign snapped at 19. Over that span,Jones averaged 16.6 points per contest. The streak stands as the thirdlongest in school history and fell one game shy of allowing Jones to becomeonly the third player in school history to score at least 10 points in 20 con-secutive contests. Jones finished out the 2011-12 campaign by scoring indouble figures in his final eight games of the year, the longest currentstreak by a Colonial, averaging 15.5 points per game over that span.
