201 5 Oktoberfest Concours d'Elegance

This year marked a new beginning for our annual OktoberfestConcours, for the first time in several years we moved to a newlarger venue in Overland Park. Our location in Rosana Square infront of the Hobby Lobby store and the Mardel Bookstore greatly

increased our available space. This al lowed us to accommodate more cars and more visitors thanever before. In total over 220 cars were on display from the Mercedes-Benz club, the BMW club, thePorsche club, the Audi club and few members of the Volkswagen club. Everyone agreed that thiswas the largest turnout any of the clubs had seen in years. Of course, the “Hog Award” was at stakeagain this year, with the BMW club winning with 70 cars on display.

Above, an aerial view of some ofthe cars on display at ourOktoberfest. Top Left: SteveEdwards with his class winning1952 170Sb. Bottom Left: LarryBarnes with his one-millionkilometer S320. Thanks to MikeDeLong for the aerial drone photos.

There have been plenty of goodthings happening of late. TheKansas City Section pulled offtwo [technically three] verysuccessful community events inrecent weeks: The 201 5Oktoberfest All-German CarShow on October 1 8th setrecords, in all we had over 220cars total and 50 of those wereMercedes-Benz, which is an all-time high for the section, atleast in my memory. Theannual Hog Award trophy, awarded to the club with thelargest number of vehiclesshowing, went to the BMWClub this year with 70. Porschewas close behind at 62 andwhile our section did not nabthe Hog Award this year, theparticipation from ourmembership was very gratifyingand we look forward to biggerand better things for next year.We were especially glad towelcome a newly-resurgentAudi contingent, along withsome Volkswagen cousins thatjoined in on the show to thetune of about 26 more cars.Their enthusiasm for the eventwas obvious, and I could nothave been more pleased thatour outreach to them via

Facebook was successful.

Another communityinvolvement for the sectioninvolves the Kansas CityAutomotive Museum. Late lastyear, the director of themuseum invited us to be themarque of the month to displayselected vehicles at themuseum for an entire month. We chose November, and thesection was well-representedplease check out the write up ofthe event here in der Benz! There should also be eventreports on both this and theOktoberfest on MBCA.org bythe time you read this.

The November breakfastmeeting was our annual visit byJim Schmidt of AristocratMotors on behalf of The UpliftOrganization, Inc.Accompanying Jim was UpliftPresident Kathy Dean, alongwith some individuals that aretrue success stories for theprogram. We enjoyed hearingfrom everyone. In addition tothe donations of clothing andother personal items, wepassed the hat and raised aneven $1 ,000 to present to JimSchmidt that day.

As we enter the holiday seasonI would like to urge everyone tobe safe while driving, shoppingand going about the usualhectic holiday business. I t'simportant to always be aware ofyour surroundings not only onthe road, but in parking lots, malls and other venues wherethe bad elements of our societytake advantage of holidaydistractions. Always watch outfor the other guy on the road, because chances are he/she isnot looking out for you. Whenyou park, be aware of thesetting avoid dark places if youpossibly can and stay nearpublic entrances to shopping.Put plainly: drive safe and don'tget mugged!!

Best wishes to you and yoursfor a happy holiday season anda wonderful 201 6!!

We normally don’ttoot the Benz hornabout our monthlybreakfastmeetings, eventhough we doprovide a varietyof speakers andprograms. However,November isalways a specialmonth, as this iswhen we have ourannual get-together with thegood people ofThe UpliftOrganization, Inc. ,a Kansas City –based charity thatreaches out to thehomeless in thearea and providessome of the basic needs to those who wouldotherwise fal l through the cracks; those who donot seek the assistance of traditional homelessshelters.

Each November we invite Jim Schmidt, theservice manager of Aristocrat Motors to not onlytalk about Uplift but bring some of the individualsthat have been helped by Uplift to havebreakfast on us. Jim and his family are ‘hard-core volunteers’: They do a lot of preparation, del ivery of meals and clothing items to thehomeless camps in the area, and Jim sees to itthat the four Sprinter vans used by Uplift in theiroperations are in proper working order. SeveralKC Section members are frequent volunteers inthe three-times-per-week excursions by theUplift vans to seek out the homeless anddistribute a warm meal, an extra pair of socks, orother personal items that most of us take for

granted.

This year, J im not only brought some existingcl ients and success stories of the Upliftoutreach, but he brought the current President of

November Breakfast Meeting: Uplift Organization

Uplift, Ms. Kathy Dean. Kathy spoke about the various initiativesand services that Uplift provides, and she and Jim introduced acouple of individuals that are true success stories for theiroperations.

At this annual outreach the Kansas City Section members alwaysdonate a hefty amount of clothing and personal items for Uplift, and this year we raised the bar for cash donations at a singlemeeting: $1 ,000 was presented to Jim Schmidt along with ourthanks for al l of his time and efforts on behalf of Uplift. We lookforward to next year’s meeting, and to helping out throughout theyear as volunteers.

One of the homeless who is served byUplift talks about what Uplift's supportmeans to him and others in his situation.

Sunday October 4th was cloudy and a bit chi l lyfor a Sunday Drive but that did not deter a groupof us from making the trip to Watkins Mil l statepark north of Kansas City. After a driving northon the highway and a slight unplanned detourwhen yours truly missed a turn in Liberty, wearrived at the park. The park consists of avisitors' center, the Watkins family home and theoriginal woolen mil l bui lding, plus a few outbuildings. All located in the surrounding acreagethat was part of the original farm.

In the visitors' center you can learn about the

family history and how they came to the area.On display are several interesting items, including household goods from the late 1 800s,a demonstration of the wool weaving processand several Watkins family items including anoriginal unrestored buggy.

Exiting the visitors' center leads to a walkingpath, that wil l take you to the house and the mil l .Around the house you wil l see several outbuildings preserved from the period, includingthe smokehouse, barns for horses and otheranimals, and the kitchen. The grounds around
