The Future of MBEConnect

Page 4: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

Welcome to our first issue of MBEConnect Profiles Digital Magazine

Editorial

Just as technology continues to advance and redefine

expectations, so should supplier diversity. The days of

simply submitting an RFP and blindly marketing your small

business are over; now business deals often begin with

relationships first formed online. The core functionality of

MBEConnect, the diverse supplier and corporate vendor

network, util izes technology as a way to build a better

supplier diversity community through social networking.

Now it is the time for the next level of connection:

detailed profiles integrated with video, interactive l inks,

presentation and more through MBEConnect Profiles.

Our goal in creating MBEConnect Profiles is to construct the future of supplier diversity through in-depth knowledge sharing. MBEConnect Profiles places all pertinent information regarding the best and brightest MWBEs in one central location that you can access on-the -go and at your convenience. This leads to better outreach for supplier diversity programs, better f its when looking for suppliers, and growth opportunities for both small businesses and corporate suppliers. We feel confident that we have raised the bar on what it means to have a business profile published and we are confident that this publication will become a major tool in the field of supplier diversity.

We are proud to feature the outstanding businesses honored at the WBENC Summit & Salute, in our first issue of MBEConnect Profiles and plan to continue this high standard in future issues.

Advancing the Successfor Women Owned

Businesses EnterprisesThe Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), founded in 1997, is the largest third-party certifier of businesses owned, controlled, and operated by women in the United States. WBENC, a national 501(c)(3) non-profit, partners with 14 Regional Partner Organizations to pro-vide its national standard of certification to women-owned businesses throughout the country. WBENC is also the nation’s leading advocate of women-owned businesses as suppliers to America’s corporations.

Page 7: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

WBENC’s MissionThe Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) is dedicated to advancing the success of Cor-porate Members, certified women’s business enterprises, and government entities in partnership with its Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs).

Who Does WBENC Serve?Major corporations that pay membership fees and have an active Supplier Diversity program, or will have one, within 12 months of membership, are classified as Cor-porate Members. Corporate Members must also demon-strate a commitment to actively conduct business with WBENC certified women business enterprises (WBEs).

Women-owned business entities that apply for and are granted WBENC certification, and have paid all relevant fees are classified as WBENC certified WBEs. WBENC certified WBEs are not classified as members of WBENC, but are classified as Beneficiaries. The collective interests of WBENC certified WBEs are represented by the Women’s Enterprise Leadership Forum composed of a group of WBEs elected as a Governing Committee.

A select group of government entities also share Member status as they meet the same criteria as Corporate Members. WBENC and its RPOs are working to increase acceptance of WBENC certification by federal, state, and local government entities throughout the country.

In compliance with a designation agreement with WBENC, 14 Regional Partner Organizations (RPOs) admin-ister WBENC certification and recertification standards to women owned businesses throughout the U.S.

CertificationWBENC provides and manages the development, enforcement and implementation of its gold stan-dard of certification, which is nationally accepted by thousands of major corporations and a select group of government entities. WBENC certification is a rigorous, multi-faceted business application and review process that is conducted by a trained Cer-tification Review Committee to ensure that women owned businesses applying for certification are 51 percent owned, operated, and controlled by a wom-an or group of women. This stipulation is a require-ment on which WBENC was founded as a key service to Corporate Members interested in doing business with women owned businesses.

ResourcesWBENC provides a broad range of resources to Corporate Members and WBEs. For Corporate Members, WBENC offers a series of nationally provided training and tools to advance the Cor-porate Members ability to grow Supplier Diver-sity programs, best practices, trends in Supplier Diversity, and professional development.

WBENC certified WBEs are offered a series of nationally provided training, including graduate level Executive Education programs, and tools to help grow their ability to better operate their business, grow their capacity to meet corporate needs, and better understand how to compete in a diverse procurement environment.

“Access to contacts, opportunities, markets, solutions, resources, and recognition based on WBENC certification.”

8tipsfor getting ahead inSupplier Diversity

by Caroline Knecht

Women- and minority-owned business enterprises (W/MBEs) are a fast-growing and important part of the new economy, and standing out among the competition is imperative to growth and success. In order to stand out among others, W/MBEs must take initiative to make the most of opportunities available through supplier diversity programs. Here are eight simple pointers to help your W/MBE get noticed by corporate partners and other businesses.

Page 11: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

Get CertifiedWhile it may seem obvious, getting certified as a W/MBE is an important aspect of succeeding in supplier diversity. Many W/MBEs are not certified at all, or limit their certifications to a single orga-nization, region or government entity. There are a variety of certification entities from local to non-profit organizations available to W/MBEs, and each one has its own set of perks and restrictions. If your W/MBE is already certified, explore reciprocal programs in other regions, states or government agencies that can help you land projects outside your current geographic area or realm of expertise.1Apply for Financial ResourcesThere are a number of financial programs in place that are specifically designed to benefit W/MBEs and provide the economic means needed to grow and prosper. The Small Business Associa-tion (SBA) provides links and a wealth of information regarding the process of applying for funds through the 8(a) Business Development Program, Minority Business Development Agency, Wom-en-Owned Businesses and HubZone Program. Loans and grants provide additional funding for ex-pansion and the means to go after larger projects. Grants may be available through specific fields, notably education and science. Private, corporate and professional grants may also be available. Special loans are readily available, especially during times of economic recovery. Research these programs and apply for the best fit for your business to help grow your business to its potential or expand to meet its needs.

2Practice the Three P’s: Patience, Persistence, and PerseveranceW/MBE owners cannot assume that contracts and opportunities will automatically come to them following certification. Landing business deals is just as time- and energy-consuming for certified businesses as non-certified businesses. Actively search for new opportunities and apply for as many of them as your business can manage. Be persistent when searching for business opportuni-ties, employ patience when awaiting a response on a contract, and use perseverance to conquer obstacles or overcome proposal rejections. Maintaining this positive attitude and determination reflects on your business’ reputation, leads to more opportunities and creates business growth.

3Build a Strong WebsiteThe website for a small business often serves as the first impression for potential clients and corporate partners in this modern age. Employ basic website best-practices -- like creating an easy-to-navigate site with engaging, well-written content -- to make the best impression possible. Create a section of your website specifically dedicated to diversity initiatives to demonstrate your commitment to supplier diversity. This can be a separate page, or simply a section detailing in your business biography that details your diversity certifications and goals. This information enables your business to stand out and prove to potential clients that you take supplier diversity as seriously as they do.

Page 12: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

Seek a MentorMentorship opportunities are a great way to gain perspective on your business needs, get valu-able advice and reinforce any weaknesses in your business strategy. Find a member of the busi-ness community with a wealth of experience who is willing to share this information is far more valuable than any single workshop or class. Mentorship programs and opportunities are often available through certification organizations, local chambers of commerce, online social network groups or other real-life business groups. Even if those who serve as a mentor to less experi-enced individuals benefit from the experience through self-evaluation, new knowledge and infor-mation sharing.

5Build and Reinforce NetworksA strong network of contacts helps to take a business to the next level. Word of mouth within networks often travels fast and leads to new business prospects. Attend events (e.g., conferences, trade shows, seminars and award ceremonies) hosted by business organizations in your area to meet new contacts and shore up existing relationships. When attending business conferences and trade shows, set quantitative goals to meet new contacts and assess their quality in terms of new business opportunities. Be sure to follow-through with all new contacts within three weeks of first meeting. A simple e-mail, phone call or connection through a social media site can do won-ders to keep a contact fresh and helpful.

6Develop a Social Media StrategyUse popular, open social networks to help you to meet new contacts and learn about trade news and opportunities. Add tags related to supplier diversity to your social media profiles to help spread the word about your business, especially in search engines. Make a commitment to updat-ing your social media statuses and profiles on a regular basis to maintain interest from subscrib-ers and keep your brand fresh and lively. Business networking sites are a great way to connect with other business owners as well as corporate entities looking for suppliers. Maintain separate social media profiles for your business and professional lives to ensure that you are viewed as a true professional. Niche social networks, like MBEConnect, provide a very specific way to pro-mote your business and get the information most relevant to your business.

7Work Towards RecognitionMany awards, honors and distinctions are bestowed upon W/MBEs each year, making them a great way to garner attention from companies with large supplier diversity programs. The most direct way to earn accolades is through consistent hard and maintaining a positive relationship with clients and others in the supplier diversity community. Being active within your certification organization can help you not only network and learn, but it’s also a great way to have your work recognized and honored. Bragging is traditionally frowned upon, but definitely keep track of busi-ness achievements in a blog, social media profile or through press releases to get the recognition you deserve.

THE GLOBAL SECOND LANGUAGE® APPROACH“The development of these methodologies has its origins in the experience gained through the company that I founded 18 years ago. It was devoted to workforce mobility management and the integration of managers and other professionals in non-home country environments. Working with people involved in all aspects of their company’s growth, transitioning from international to multinational to global, we witnessed something incredible: the first phase of today’s Globalization, enabled by technology infrastructure and new business models. The current, second phase is much more challenging because efficiency and operational effectiveness depend on collaboration across multiple cultures at the same time, with English language as the primary communication conduit. As all business is developing globally

and borders have disappeared, every organization has to leverage talents, expertise, creativity, and contacts from multiple geographical areas, multiple cultures, and multiple languages. English may be the language of business but non-native and native English speakers from different countries use English differently—often without realizing it. We come in daily contact with people that are from different backgrounds than our own. Our productivity and the success of our endeavors rely more and more on the effectiveness of these interactions, and our ability to leverage all of this knowledge, contacts and resources—a synergistic, result-oriented collaboration. The Global Second Language approach utilizes culturally-neutral communication and strategic thinking (supported by a global mindset), which leverages the benefits of diversity and inclusion, measurably improving business results.” —Lorelei Carobolante

We pride ourselves in our expert service, due to our knowledgeable, dedicated staff. Diversity Supplier Development

Chrysler Group LLC’s Leadership Commitment to Supplier Diversity

Chrysler Group LLC, formed in 2009 from a global strategic alliance with Fiat, S.p.A., produces Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram, Mopar®, and Fiat vehicles and products. With the resources, tech-nology and worldwide distribution network required to compete on a global scale, the alliance builds on Chrysler Group’s culture of innovation – first established by Walter P. Chrysler in 1925 – and Fiat’s complementary technology – from a company whose heritage dates back to 1899.

Headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich., Chrysler Group’s product lineup features some of the world’s most recognizable vehicles, including the Chrysler 300, Jeep Wrangler and Ram Truck. Fiat contributes world-class technology, platforms and powertrains for small- and medium-size cars, allowing Chrysler Group to offer an expanded product line including environmentally friendly vehicles.

Page 32: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

Question: What is your vision for the department?

Bell: The vision for Chrysler’s Diversity Supplier Development group is to be the premier supplier diversity program globally and to champion a diversified extended enterprise that reflects our employees, customer base, and the communities we serve.

Chrysler has historically developed many of the best practices that other organizations have incorporated in their supplier diversity programs. Chrysler’s intention is to maintain Chrysler’s position as a leader in the supplier diversity arena.

Question: Assess Chrysler’s current supplier diversity program and future Direction.

Bell: There are certain things that are core to our program and that we must maintain. As an example, it is critical that we maintain our annual Matchmaker event and membership in core minority councils and advocacy groups. We want to strive to keep a presence in the community which is an imperative to a well-rounded diversity program. With regard to our future direction, we are now reaching out to engage other OEMs in the discussion so that we can have a collective voice, common practices, and demonstrate the critical importance of these programs to our industry. We are trying to innovatively create a better ways to motivate our Tier 1 suppliers to participate in the program – one future example might be evaluating suppliers based on their community impact and their efforts to make investments in empowerment zones.

Question: What about the current supply base is encouraging?

Bell: Clearly, transitioning from a North American market of 17 million units down to 10 – 12 million units has had adverse implications on all suppliers. It is encouraging that the vast majority of Chrysler’s diverse suppliers were able to withstand the economic downturn. The supply base demonstrated remarkable resiliency, and the overall financial health within the supply base, including MBEs, is stronger than it has ever been. Additionally, the extent that supplier diversity has regained traction over the last year, under the direction and leadership of Dan Knott, Chrysler’s Senior Vice President of Procurement, is very encouraging. Dan and others in the industry are really driving the supply base to embrace supplier diversity.

Page 33: MBEConnect Profiles, Volume 1, Issue 1

Question: What common mistakes do you see minority suppliers make that are detrimental to their current and future business opportunities?

Bell: The most common mistake is that they move outside their level of expertise too quickly. Although I strongly believe that all entrepreneurs must possess the ability to adapt to their customers’ needs, taking on new business that is out of scope or taking on business at any cost can put any supplier in a detrimental position. Another common mistake is putting more emphasis on winning business as opposed flawlessly executing existing business programs. Often, collaborating with another company is the best way for a MBE to win business, whether that is with another MBE or a majority company. We would like to see more collaboration amongst suppliers – leveraging geographic presence, skill sets, etc.

Question: How can minority suppliers learn about the products Chrysler procures and/or future sourcing opportunities at Chrysler?

Bell: The best way for minority suppliers to learn about opportunities with Chrysler is to participate in our annual Matchmaker event. The event normally features over 250 exhibitors comprised of minority, women-owned businesses, and veteran-owned businesses. Last year alone, over 1700 visitors attended. The event is ideal for suppliers seeking to do business with Chrysler since it provides access to our Tier I suppliers and Chrysler’s procurement community. Another way to learn about Chrysler’s procurement needs is to register and maintain a supplier profile within Chrysler’s diversity website. The website can be accessed via the web address: supplierdiversity.chrysler.com.

Question: What new initiatives will Chrysler employ to ensure minority suppliers are involved in your procurement process?

Bell: In terms of specific initiatives, we will continue to provide access via our annual Matchmaker event. Similarly, we will continue to maintain a strong presence in our core national and local minority councils and advocacy groups. Internally, the diversity team continues to meet with the Commodity Directors on a monthly basis to identify upcoming sourcing opportunities. Lastly, we will continue to challenge our large Tier I suppliers that are underperforming by requiring them to have measurable and credible devel-opment plans in place before being awarded any new business.

Question: Is there anything else that you would like to say regarding supplier diversity?

Bell: We, at Chrysler, do not view diversity as a program that stops and starts depending on the state of the company or the economic climate. Rather, we view diversity as a necessity for our company to be successful and sustainable. This year, Chrysler celebrates its 28h year of championing diversity and in-clusion. The unwavering commitment to supplier diversity that Chrysler has demonstrated in the past will endure.

Innovator. Activist. Entrepreneur. Optimist. Archie Williams was many things. But most of all, he was a believer in bringing manufacturing back to the Boston community, where he felt it could do the most good, providing jobs and stimulating economic growth. And in today’s challenging economy, his vision is more important than ever.

DOING GOOD RUNS IN THE FAMILYArchie’s daughter, Beth Williams became President and CEO in 2003. Since taking the helm, she has carried on her father’s legacy of providing jobs and opportunities in an underserved community, whilepromoting ecological responsibility with recycled products. Under her guidance, Roxbury has experienced double-digit growth as well asgarnered awards and positive press for its successful, socially conscious approach to business.

“Our focus is on creating a sustainable business that supports our local community and promotes

American-made products that are recycled, affordable, and come with a level of customer service that our competitors can’t match. As we continue to grow, we hope to always match an environmentally and socially sound business model with our clients’ needs—it’s a good fit.” Beth Williams, CEO of Roxbury

BUSINESS MODEL BENEFITS:• American-made manufacturing.

• Recycled products reduce environmental waste.

• Commitment to sustainable business practices.

• Cost savings without sacrificing quality.

• Partnerships with area businesses and charitable

organizations.

ROXBURY STATEMENT,ROXBURY TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION (RTC) specializes in premium remanufactured toner cartridges and imaging solutions—but that’s only part of the story. The company began with a mission: create jobs and build our community while making top-quality, earth-friendly products. This commitment guides us as we combine innovation with functional solutions, and find ways to make a difference while making a profit. We want to make a lasting difference, and we want to make it now. RTC, which saw revenues

in excess of 16 million in 2009, is Staples Inc.’s preferred diversity supplier of remanufactured imaging supplies in catalogs and online. It’s a partnership that has helped Williams grow her business by more than 800 percent in less than five years. With such tremendous growth, Roxbury moved to a new 30K square foot facility in 2010.

Roxbury Technology’s success is also a testament to Boston’s business and civic leaders who recognize the importance and benefits of networking.

MBEConnectMBEConnectMBEConnect was started 1 year ago, with a simple idea...Allow MWBEs to connect with Corporations to network and build better business relationships. Studies show that linking MWBEs and corporate partners together through business social networking increases the likelihood of new deal completions. Social network functions, including network queries; access to first and second-degree contracts, profiles and their specific associations; personal network management; knowledge sharing forums and other collaborative tools, contribute to the ability to share information about prospective clients. With that in mind, here is what we have in store for 2011.
