Edge Systems, L.L.C.Case Study

Background: A few years ago, the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON) called onEdge Systems to provide an IMEDGE forms processing system to help the boardstreamline the Nursing License Renewal process. While the forms processing systemprovided satisfactory results, the board was looking to bring the whole process to theInternet. That’s when MBON asked Edge to assist them in bringing the license renewalprocess on line.

Challenge: Deliver an on line transaction processing system to allow MBON to pro-vide cost-effective license renewal for all active Registered Nurses (RN), LicensedPractical Nurses (LPN), and Advanced Practical Nurses (APN).

Solution: Edge provided an on-line system that allows for the electronic capture of theapplicant data, providing hours of reduced effort for MBON staff. It is no longer neces-sary to open mail, prepare and scan forms, and perform quality assurance on theforms. In addition, all payments are handled electronically via credit card, eliminatingthe need for staff to process payment information. The on-line Nursing License Re-newal System co-exists with the IMEDGE forms processing system, allowing MBON touse the same workflow process. With the on-line solution, the only manual processinvolves mailing the renewed licenses to the nurses. The on-line and forms processingsystems combined handle nearly 7,000 applications per month.

Results: Currently over 60% of nurses in the state are renewing on-line.The systemprovides significant labor savings as well as improved operating efficiency. A keybenefit of the new on-line applications is improved data accuracy. When an applicantlogs into the system and enters their identifying data the system extracts legacy datafrom an existing database and presents it to the user. Then all the applicant has to dois review and make necessary updates to the data. In effect, the applicant is providinga quality check of the data, eliminating the need for MBON staff to quality assure thedata. Customer support is also simplified. Because the system is a simple, self-ex-planatory web browser-based application, the MBON staff can handle the vast majorityof support calls with only a small percentage of the calls being offloaded to Edge.

The MBON provides an easy-to-useonline license renewal system for allactive Registered Nurses (RN), Li-censed Practical Nurses (LPN), andAdvanced Practical Nurses (APN).

The on-line Nursing License Re-newal System co-exists with theIMEDGE forms processing system, allowing MBON to use the sameworkflow process. With the on-linesolution, the only manual processinvolves mailing the renewed li-censes to the nurses.
