Bob McMurray has had a long relationship with motor sport - especially Formula 1. He spent over 30 years with McLaren International and 7 years as a commentator on TVNZ ONE Sport and Radio Sport where he is currently co-host of the 'On Track - Off Track' weekly radio show. He is also a trustee of the Motor sport New Zealand Scholarship Trust, a committee member of the Bruce McLaren Trust, ambassador for the Toyota Racing Series and director of two sports marketing companies. In 2006 Bob was awarded the 'Motor Sport New Zealand Personality of the Year Award' and in 2007, the 'Motor Trades Association Award for Contribution to Industry'. He has also authored a successful book about life in Formula 1. He is a multiple visitor to the Indianapolis 500 and various Indy Car and NASCAR events both in a professional capaci-ty and also as a plain old fan.

MEET YOUR TOUR LEADERS

“I have spent a lifetime in Formula 1 and now motor sport, in almost all it’s varied forms, is still a major part of my life. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to watch it and talk about it and a tour of this type, taking in three of the world’s most watched and popular, yet totally different, disciplines is a dream come true. It will be an added pleasure to be with people with whom I may be able to

share my own knowledge and enthusiasm.”

BOB MCMURRAY

“In 1994 I was approached by a specialist sporting tours

operator to ‘escort’ a tour to Adelaide. Some of the people I

met on that, and subsequent tours I ‘led’, have remained

friends – sure the initial connection was motor racing but

we’re not only one dimensional and often you find other

shared interests.

MICHAEL CLARK

Often, when they jointly MC motor racing events, Bob McMurray will introduce Michael Clark as ‘the walking For-

mula 1 encyclopaedia’. It is not a term that Michael covets but he will admit to reluctantly storing an excessive array

of trivial facts relating to motor racing – and Formula 1 in particular.

In the mid 1980s he started as a weekly contributor to Radio Pacific’s ‘Sportsline’. A decade later he had his own

hour long weekly radio show dedicated to motor racing – by then Michael was also contributing monthly columns to

magazines in New Zealand and since 2002 he has penned ‘Motorsport Flashback’ in New Zealand Classic Car.

He assisted his good friend Eoin Young with ‘Forza Amon’ and ‘Memories of the Bear’ and more recently has

penned the books produced in conjunction with the New Zealand Motor Racing Festivals on Bruce McLaren and

Chris Amon. He has also completed a book on Denny Hulme in conjunction with the 2013 Festival.

In addition to numerous Formula 1 GPs, Michael has attended a wide range of events overseas including Goodwood

Revivals, Bathurst, Phillip Island Classics, the 40th anniversary of Can-Am at Elkhart Lake – and even a round of the

British Hillclimb championship at Doune.

ITINERARY HIGHLIGHTS BY BOB McMURRAY

“It has taken a long time for us to develop this tour and we are proud of it in that we believe it really will be the tour of a lifetime taking in three of the biggest motor sporting events in North America at that time, as well as visiting truly world famous places like Niagara Falls and Lake Placid.

Anyone who has never been to the Indy 500 will never understand the incredible atmosphere that the event generates. Anybody who has been there will understand that atmosphere perfectly and want to go back.

It is the world’s largest one day sporting event in terms of spectators and takes place in the world’s largest sporting stadi-um - bar none. Scott Dixon made history by becoming the first Kiwi to win the event in 2008 and from 2006 to 2012 he has never been out of the top six finishers - there is no reason to believe that 2013 will be any different.

After Indy we travel to Niagara Falls, truly a world wonder. I have been fortunate to visit the Falls once or twice and the experience of being on a boat and motoring right up to the very edge of the cascading water is at once exhilarating and awe inspiring.

From there we go back down and across the country to Dover, Delaware for that most American of motor sports, NASCAR, at the ‘Monster Mile’. Always a place to guarantee incident and accident at speeds of more than 300kph with some 40 plus cars racing around the one mile oval.

Every seat in the house gets a great view and I think the ones we have chosen are the best. They certainly looked it on my last visit there.

We then journey northwards to Lake Placid nestled in the beautiful Adirondack region of upstate New York and after a stay of two nights, and a couple of local visits, we go on into Canada en route to Montreal - one of my favorite cities, and most certainly favorite Formula 1 Grands Prix.

The city itself is a unique blend of old and new, French and Canadian. The language of the locals is a very old form of French, much the same as if we were speaking English as it was in Shakespeare’s days. Many French simply cannot actual-ly understand the nuances of the language and prefer to speak in English.

The old town on the hill has classic architecture but the city has a subway system that takes spectators straight to the For-mula 1 track, the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, situated just a twenty-five minute ride from downtown.

The Formula 1 race itself has never been without drama and incident and is usually one of the most exciting races to be held each year.”

After each day at the track it is back to the nightlife in the city which, I can assure you, is second to none with the best and most diverse restaurants that can be found anywhere in the world - the bars and clubs are pretty good as well!

So, both Michael and I hope you can join us in what will surely be the trip of a lifetime.

Regards

‘BOB’
