ThreephaseACmotorsarecomprisedoftwomajorcomponents,thestatorandtherotor .Thestatorisasetofthreeelectricalwindingsheldstationaryinthemotorhousing .Therotorisametalcylinder,fixedtothemotordriveshaft,whichrotateswithinthestator .ThearrangementofthestatorcoilsandthepresenceofthreephaseACvoltagegiverisetoarotatingmagneticfieldwhichdrivestherotor .Thespeedatwhichthemagneticfieldrotatesisknownasthesynchronousspeedofthemotor .Synchronousspeedisafunctionofthefrequencyatwhichthevoltageisalternatingandthenumberofpolesinthestatorwindings .
Thefollowingequationgivestherelationbetweensynchronousspeed,frequency,andthenumberofpoles:
Ss=120f/p
Where: Ss= Synchronousspeed(rpm) f= frequency(Hz) p= numberofpoles
Inthreephaseinductionmotorstheactualshaftspeeddiffersfromthesynchronousspeedasloadisapplied .Thisdifferenceisknownas“slip” .Slipiscommonlyexpressedasapercentageofsynchronousspeed .Atypicalvalueisthreepercentatfullload .
Thestrengthofthemagneticfieldinthegapbetweentherotorandstatorisproportionaltotheamplitudeofthevoltageatagivenfrequency .Theoutputtorquecapabilityofthemotor is, therefore,a functionof theappliedvoltageamplitudeatagiven frequency .Whenoperatedbelowbase (rated) speed,ACmotors run in the rangeof “constanttorque” .Constant torqueoutput is obtainedbymaintaininga constant ratiobetweenvoltageamplitude(Volts)andfrequency(Hertz) .For60Hzmotorsratedat230,460,and575Vac,commonvaluesforthisV/Hzratioare3 .83,7 .66,and9 .58respectively .OperatingwiththeseV/Hzratiosgenerallyyieldsoptimumtorquecapability .Operatingatlowerratiovaluesresultsinlowertorqueandpowercapability .Operatingathigherratiovalueswillcausethemotortooverheat .Moststandardmotorsarecapableofprovidingfulltorqueoutputfrom3to60Hz .However,atlowerspeeds,wheremotorcoolingfansbecomelesseffective,supplementalcoolingmaybeneededtooperateat full torqueoutputcontinuously .
Ifthefrequencyappliedtothemotorisincreasedwhilethevoltageremainsconstant,torque capability will decrease as speed increases . This will cause the horsepowercapabilityofthemotortoremainapproximatelyconstant .Motorsruninthismodewhenoperated above base speed, where drive output voltage is limited by the input linevoltage .Thisoperatingrangeisknownasthe“constanthorsepower”range .Thetypicalmaximumrangeforconstanthorsepowerisabout2 .3to1(60to140Hz) .ThediagrambelowdepictsthecharacteristicsofatypicalACinductionmotorwitha60Hzbasespeed .
