TODAY WE WILL LEARN:

•Why we have night and day.

•The Earth’s position and what is

it doing.•Why does the Moon

look different at times.

What do we see when we lookup into the sky?

When it’s dark we see the moon and the stars.

Why do we have night?

On a clear day we can see the sun.

Why do we have day?

KWL CHARTWHAT DO WE KNOW?

WHAT DO WE WANT TO KNOW?

When we wake up it’s daylight.

Why is it daylight?

The Earth’s Rotation

The Earth is rotating around an axis.

Think of the Earth as a spinning top, tipped over to one side.

The Earth's axis is tipped over about 23.5° from vertical.

(moroney, 2007)

What makes day and night?

Earth revolves around the Sun the Moon revolves around the Earth.

Earth revolves around the Sun in a year and rotates on its axis in a 24-hour day. (moroney, 2007)

Why Does Earth Have Day and Night?

•Earth is spinning.•Once every 24 hours Earth turns•When we are on the side of Earth that is facing the Sun, we have daylight•As Earth continues its spin, we are moved to the side facing away from our Sun, and we have nighttime. (Moroney, 2007)

Working in groups of three, students will use this worksheet

to show why we have daylight and night.

(Moroney, 2007)

Page 11: McCabe, Cynthia 5-23-09 Grade 4. Why we have night and day. The Earth’s position and what is it doing. Why does the Moon look different at times

We can see the moon change throughout the

month.

As the moon orbits the earth, we see the light side of the moon in various phases (moroney,

2007).

You will cut out and match the moon phases to the description (rose,

2009)
