Wolf Down: Can S.F. Support Country? Losing any Country station is a disappointment in this business, but losing one in a top five market is borderline devastating and inevitably triggers some industry-wide soul searching. including her single “Generation Love,” which Mabe describes as “what Jennette wants to say about her generation and how they give back.” Afterward, McCurdy signs purchased CD singles and 8x10 photographs, with proceeds going to St. Jude. “Her goal from the beginning was to raise $100,000,” Mabe says. “And she’ll probably exceed that. She signs until the mall closes. It’s a win for everyone, though some of the smaller malls have been somewhat set back by the turnout. But we’ve had people come up and say they were a St. Jude kid. We sometimes get stuck doing the same thing over and over again with new artists, so this has been kind of cool. It’s a pretty moving experience for us all.” Hodges agrees. “It all stems from the song itself. ‘Generation Love’ is an adult song, not a kid or teen song, and we’re getting great feedback. The tour itself has been a great success, a nice way to launch a career, and Jennette’s going to be able to write a six-figure check to St. Jude in a couple weeks. That’s not your typical new artist radio tour by any stretch.”

numbers are insane, but getting to those people and letting them know she’s doing music is my biggest problem.”

SVP/Promotion Steve Hodges says the fledgling artist didn’t need a hard sell. “When Jennette heard the idea, she said she definitely wanted to do it and definitely wanted to make it about St. Jude,” he says. “She went to the hospital in January and came back with renewed hope, love and passion for that charity.”

McCurdy has long been drawn to the cause of children’s hospitals. “She’s been doing visits probably since she was seven,” Mabe says. “And she’s so popular, obviously, when she goes in and makes those stops. She definitely feels there’s no use in having fame if she isn’t doing something meaningful with it.” While the concept may have quickly clicked, execution was another story. “It’s been a lot of work, to be honest,” Mabe says. “If I had to do it again, I might go to one mall chain, but we wanted to target markets that got it. So we’ve had to put the entire marketing staff on the road. It’s been an all-hands-on-deck project.” Hodges explains, “It’s a full concert production and requires everything from advancing the mall to getting insurance. Cindy’s team has done a great job on the logistics. Jennette has posted info on her Facebook, but our partners in Country radio have been the only way to hear about these events locally. To their credit, they’ve had to have a bit of blind faith in doing this with a new artist. We’ve had to convince them to let us bring her in, find a mall in a hot Zip code and prove to them what she can deliver. “And they’ve stepped up in a big way. They show up with their station vehicles, emcee the shows and bring her up onstage, just like a regular concert. And there are literally thousands of people showing up. Moms bringing their kids, kids bringing their moms, adults and teens coming out on their own. Everyone who buys a CD and photo is guaranteed an autograph, and some of them have to stand in line for hours. It can’t be easy for Jennette to sign thousands of autographs, but she does it with a smile.” The shows integrate the St. Jude message with an introductory video about the hospital and its patients. Accompanied by two musicians, McCurdy then performs a four-to-seven-song set,

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaPed My Life

WMAD/Madison OM Mike Ferris discusses his most influential songs, albums or concerts:1. George Harrison, Olympia Stadium, Detroit, Dec. 1974: My very first concert!2. Bob Seger/Night Moves: A coming-of-age classic. Bob is the Working Class Hero of Michigan! 3. Bruce Springsteen, Rosemont Horizon, Chicago, March 1988: The Tunnel of Love Tour. My wife and I were

married two months later!4. Glen Campbell/Wichita Lineman: The lyrics, vocals and production paint a melancholy image that reflect a painfully profound period of life in my 20s. 5. Little Big Town/Boondocks: I grew up in the city, and this song perfectly captures my image of life in the “sticks.” Something that is simply very appealing to me.• A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Wanted! The Outlaws by Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser. It’s on my CD bucket list.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew. There are some mainstream jazz artists and works that I absolutely love. This one escapes me. I’ve never been able to listen to the entire album because it’s too confusing.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: The American version of the Beatles’ Rubber Soul that opens with “I’ve Just Seen a Face.” They always had a flair of country in their best works.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Katie Melua’s Nine Million Bicycles. You could compare her to Norah Jones. She’s jazzy, sensitive and has an incredible voice!

Off The recOrd: MargareT duranTe

Stroudavarious’ Margaret Durante gives an industry spin on the artist interview:What was your favorite radio station growing up? I had two favorites —Top 40 WIHT/Washington, DC and Country WMZQ/Washington, DC. My friends and I went to the WMZQ Fest every summer, and they played the first song I was ever obsessed with – “How Do I Live Without You” by Trisha Yearwood and LeAnn Rimes. I think they played both versions. Which label staffer is the worst driver? I

guess Bill Macky, but he’s not a bad driver. He just gets thrown off by the GPS. We named our GPS Deborah during a trip through Texas. We’d be driving along and a road name unique to that city would come on, the voice changed and Deborah would sound all creepy.Who holds the record for taking the longest radio tour route? Eric Beggs wouldn’t even fly from Nashville to Atlanta because he refused to have to go back through Atlanta security. So, we drove from Nashville to Atlanta, had dinner with WUBL, then we drove to Charleston, SC the next day for a WIWF show. From Charleston we drove to Augusta, GA, had a meeting there and then drove back to Atlanta to catch my flight to DC. Eric drove back to Nashville. It was a lot of driving. I got really good at sleeping in a car. What’s the best app to find eats on the road? I have a Chick-fil-A app. It finds your current location and gets you to the nearest one. It’s so funny that the app even exists. But to my joyful surprise, I found it while we were looking for a Chick-fil-A. It’s the lesser of the evils when it comes to fast food. What gross truck stop food tempts you? I’m a huge hotdog fan. People always tell me, “Do you know what’s in a hotdog?” I don’t care. It’s delicious with lots of mustard. What’s the craziest event you’ve ever played? To be clear, it wasn’t a WFRE/Frederick, MD event, but we were in town to perform at an event where a rodeo ring separated the stage and the audience. In between our sets, parents were hoisting their children onto giant sheep, who would try to buck them off. It was a child’s version of a rodeo. My guitar player and I didn’t know if we could regain our composure between sets because we were laughing so hard watching these children hanging on for their lives. The sheep were fierce. The kids were just holding onto their wool and getting thrown around while their parents yelled, “Woo-hoo!” What question do you never want to answer again? Why don’t you try out for American Idol?

The Band Perry will headline a VH1 Save The Music fundraiser concert June 2 at Nashville’s Hard Rock Café. Proceeds will benefit public school music education programs. Details here. Craig Morgan will headline the inaugural NRA Country Jam April 29 in Pittsburgh. Sarah Darling and Due West are also on the bill. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Folds Of Honor Foundation. Laura Bell Bundy, Jerrod Niemann, the Civil Wars and Old Crow Medicine Show are among the lineup of performers slated for the Recording Academy Nashville Chapter’s 13th Annual Grammy Block Party May 10 at Owen Bradley Park. The event is free to Recording Academy members and those signing up for membership.

Apprentice – Raising The Steaks During Sunday’s (4/17) Celebrity Apprentice teams Backbone and A.S.A.P. were challenged to orchestrate an Omaha Steaks cooking demonstration for company executives. Project manager Gary Busey experienced miscommunication with team Backbone members including John Rich, who was tasked with creating the team’s three-course Father’s Day menu. Aside from the red meat challenge, Rich had a beef with Busey for calling him “boy” off-camera. In the boardroom, Busey claimed he called Rich “kuh-boy,” as in “cowboy.” Busey was fired. That said, Deaton doesn’t believe Country will be back. “Who hasn’t done it? When they put the Wolf on in 2007, I saw that as the last ditch effort to make Country work in San Francisco.” Albright & O’Malley’s Jaye Albright believes while there’s room for a Country station, “You need to cover the nine counties in the Bay Area. There are two or three signals that

could do a great job. But the truth is they’re doing so well with what they’re doing. It would be too big of a financial risk.” The lack of a Country station in market No. 4 may be bad for the format’s ego, but it’s a great opportunity for stations that surround San Francisco. “This will be great for KRTY,” Albright says. “Their TSE should really go up. You’ve got [Citadel’s] KATM in Modesto and Maverick’s KFGY (Froggy) in Santa Rosa doing real well.” Deaton won’t let the absence of KBWF change KRTY’s approach. “We are what we are,” he says. “We are limited to what our signal is. There’s streaming, there’s apps, but we won’t change anything we do, no more so than the last time someone went off.” With or without KBWF, both album sales and concert touring remain an important component of the country landscape in the region. Capitol Nashville CEO Mike Dungan says in spite of the Wolf’s early success, “The volume of record sales didn’t really increase when the station came on. It’s almost like the fans there are going to find the music through KRTY or the other suburban stations out there.” On the touring side, Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw are among the artists making stops this year. Live Nation/Nashville President Brian O’Connell says KBWF’s exit is “a loss, but

its a great country market and always has been. We’re not going to do fewer shows. It’s an automatic route. We’re just going to try harder to get the word out. It’s KRTY’s ball now, and they’re going to have to run with it.” Country Aircheck attempted to reach Entercom VP/Country Mike Moore for this story, but he was unavailable. CAC

• Former longtime WSIX/Nashville personality and Country Radio Hall of Famer Gerry House was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame (4/12) at the NAB Show Radio Luncheon in Las Vegas. (CAT 4/13)• CBS Radio’s KILT-FM/Houston afternoon host Rowdy Yates left after 16 years at the station and is relocating to Tulsa. (CAT 4/13)• Greg McCarn was named GM of Black River Entertainment, overseeing marketing, promotion, public relations, sales and digital media. (CAT 4/14)• Former KIQK/Rapid City, SD afternoon host Robbie Owens joined Entercom’s WGGY (Froggy 101)/Wilkes Barre for the same airshift. (CAT 4/15)• Clear Channel Top 40 KSLZ and Gen-X WSGX/St. Louis PD Jeff McHugh was named OM for the six-station cluster, which includes Country KSD (The Bull). (CAT 4/15)• Advertising and PR executive Hope Romero was named Market Manager for Clear Channel/Farmington, NM’s five-station cluster, which includes Country KTRA. (CAT 4/12)

Wolf Down (continued from page 1)“But they jolted the system. They replaced a show that was popular. Not a hello, not a ramp up period. Then it seemed like – my observation, I wasn’t there – it became a bad pop station trying to hide the fact that it was a Country station.” The Wolf started losing its early momentum, falling into the low twos by fall of 2009 and eventually dipping into the low ones. In the March PPMs released Monday (4/18), KBWF registered its third consecutive 1.1. In spite of Entercom’s flip to Sports, Mahalick and others familiar with the market believe Country can work. Nate Deaton, GM of Empire’s KRTY/San Jose, has been an observer of the San Francisco market through its many Country iterations. “Country will work there,” he says. “I don’t think that everyone has done it the easy way. KRTY is 45 miles from San Francisco, in the heart of Silicon Valley and as mainstream as it gets. I’m not sure why we have to do anything eclectic.”
