McElroy TracStar Machines Bringing BetterInfrastructure to Rural IndiaIt was a little more than a year ago that we announced the opening of our new office anddemonstration facility in Bangalore. A lot has happened in that short amount of time as McElroy Indiacontinues to work hard at promoting fusible pipelines and our machines in South Asia.

Matt Rinowski, technical service specialist, has trained four fusion operators with Chandrodaya, aprivate India contractor that is currently fusing pipe for a 180km irrigation line in Odisha, an easternIndian state. It is the biggest and most encouraging project McElroy India has been involved with sofar and is hoped to build acceptance of fused pipe and the capabilities of our machines.

The jobsite is near a remote village with no power. That was one of the reasons they chose to usethe McElroy TracStar® 500 and 412 which run on diesel. They’re also rugged enough to handle therural terrain and are being paired efficiently with our Low­Profile Rollers and Pipe Stands.

McElroy India makes regular visits to the jobsite to see that things are running smoothly. We thinkthey will see that our machines can help them get the project done more quickly.

“The TracStars are self­contained so there’s no generator or extra equipment to haul around, this willhelp the customer save costs in the long run” said McElroy India’s regional director Bharath Rao.

The Odisha project is also using the McElroy DataLogger® to record and analyze their fusion jointrecords. This offers them great reassurance that the correct fusion parameters were followed tocreate a leak­free joint before the pipe is buried.

News of the McElroy India office caught the attention of Trenchless World who wanted to learn more.

Why did McElroy open an office in India?

India is on track to surpass China’s population with more than 1.4 billion people by 2028. Youngpeople represent the majority of their population and they desire a better quality of life. This includesmodern amenities we take for granted such as indoor plumbing, sewer systems, electricity anddependable road systems. We believe there is a tremendous need and opportunity to bring betterinfrastructure to India. Fusible piping systems are the most reliable in the world and will help lay thebasic foundation necessary to grow their economy and improve their daily lives.

How is business since the office opened?

We’re off to a really great start. India is a new frontier for us, so we are conducting hands­ondemonstrations to familiarize end­users with our machines and the benefits of fusible piping. Ourbusiness right now is primarily rental, and we are securing a variety of contracts with end users.

We now have a fully stocked warehouse with everything from socket fusion machines used in indoorplumbing and mechanical systems to large­diameter tracked machines used to install major pipingsystems such as potable water and sewer systems. We also offer a maintenance and overhaulservice for our rental fleet and fusion training. In early 2016, we will be offering in­house certifiedtraining through our educational division, McElroy University.

What projects has McElroy equipment been working on?

We signed a one­year contract recently for a 180km job in Odisha, an agricultural city in the east.They will be using several of our medium­diameter machines to fuse an irrigation pipeline for rice, oilseeds and sugar­cane crops. In Medikere, about 267km northwest of Bangalore, there is a water­distribution project for a coffee plantation where our machines are being used. Some of our smallestequipment is being used in New Delhi for 32mm pipe.

We’re also working on contracts outside of India in the Asian market for large projects.

What are the opportunities for trenchless in India?

Trenchless is a preferred method because of the minimaldisruption to public roadways. They recognize that lessexcavation, followed by less restoration work once the job iscomplete, is a great advantage. We have already bid on acouple of projects using horizontal directional drilling (HDD).The staging of these kinds of jobsites is very important. Wecan help them select the best machine for the pipe size andthe jobsite’s particular requirements as well as theproductivity accessories to support the operation. We alsoencourage the use of data­logging tools to verify anddocument the integrity of the joints, which ensures the long­term success of the pipeline. We hope to become their one­source stop for all things fusion.

What are the challenges the trenchless market faces?

Polyethylene is still a young market in India, particularly withwater, so this is a learning experience for them. Many areunaware of it, and we realize that it will take us a while todevelop the market. But we’re here for the long haul. Weare working with end­users to show them what we can bring to their projects. When they see howswiftly you can build these infrastructures and provide service to a lot of people in a short amount oftime, we think this will build acceptance, confidence, and best of all, momentum.

Do you expect to open other facilities in the country soon?

We do. In addition to our main office and demonstration facility in Bangalore, we have hired anassistant sales manager in New Delhi and will soon do so in Mumbai. We are also looking at Kolkatain the northeast part of the country.

Setting up local offices in various cities will help tap new opportunities and give us access to themany water projects that are under way in the PAN India region. We believe there is a tremendousneed and opportunity to bring better infrastructure to India.

The manual Pipe Stands feature a chain height adjustment for uneven terrain, allowing the pipe to besupported at the same height as the machine. This makes the pipe parallel to the machine whichmakes it easier to adjust hi/low to achieve a square face­off of the pipe.

HYDRAULICAvailable for 3” to 20” pipe

The same benefits of the original Pipe Stands also apply to the Hydraulic Pipe Stands with options formanual height adjustment or hand­pumped hydraulic lifting to suit your particular jobsite needs.Hand­pumped hydraulic lifting gives the operator the ability to adjust the height of the stand while thepipe is still supported on the stand, reducing the demand for extra equipment needed to maneuver
