    BCS & NCO ACADEMY

    By Cadet Maria Mangano

This is my second year as the Project Officer for Basic Cadet School & NCOAcademy. With the assistance of C/CMSgt Jared Hendler, the organization,

coordination, planning, and preparation of the Academies took place over thesummer. I think I can speak for both of us when I say that acting as ExecutiveStaff for the event we organized is absolutely amazing. Although my time atGreat Lakes was extremely stressful it was also very worthwhile. Steppingback during graduation and realizing what we accomplished over a singleweekend was mind blowing! The weekend flew by and before I knew it it wastime to pack up and leave. I have next year's BCS & NCO Academy to lookforward to now!

This years Camp Lead was held atFreeport, IL. Thirteen cadets and six

officers participated in the bivouac thatincluded group leadership exercises, emergency services exercises, gazingthrough telescopes, model rocketry, adrill off and volleyball. Three memberscompleted their Ground Team qualifica-tion. Cadet Krystal Freund won theDrill Off TWICE!

I encourage cadets and officers to marktheir calendar next year for this event. It was a lot of fun and a great learning

    experience.

National Blue Beret is an NCSA that takes place over twoweeks at Whitman airfield in Oshkosh Wisconsin. A word ofwarning to cadets interested in attending: DO NOT go just

to get your beret. If you do you will fail. I went because ofthe ES qualifications. I am now qualified for Flight Line Mar-shaller, Mission Radio Operator, and Urban Direction Find-ing. Why, you may ask, do they give out so many qualifica-

tions, the answer is simple: they dont. Lots of work goesinto training Blue Berets. From marshalling classes to radioclasses to L-PER classes to lectures from the comms officerto... you get the point. And, of course, your training endswith the presentation of the coveted beret.

Then when you go operational the work gets harder. Gener-ally five minutes are allowed for breakfast, 10 for lunch andabout 20 for dinner. That is, unless youre on KP during ameal. Two hours on the flight line is normal, two hours atWarbirds, two hours on ES. Flights are allowed one night inOshkosh during the week, the first hour of which is oftenspent at Wal-Mart. Yes, cadets who have their first free timein two weeks want to spend some of it at Wally World.Time is also allowed for cadets to watch the air shows thathappen everyday. So if at any time in the next few months Istart involuntarily marshalling, or if I hear thunder and thinkits just an air raid, please take a deep breath, forgive me,and blame it on National Blue Beret.

    SURPRISE VISIT

    By 1st Lt James Kalemis

Words can not convey our gratitude and appreciation toCapt. Bill Watson for surprising us with a visit to oursquadron and bringing the Cessna 182. Last month theOrientation Flights were cancelled due to funding. So itwas quite a treat for the cadets to learn about the aircraftand get to see it. I hear that we have funding for O-

Flights in October, so cadets, mark October 29 downas an O-Flights day.
