The Distinguished Student Award is the highest honor a student can receive from the McKinney Independent School District. Only 15 seniors from each high school are presented with the award each year. In addition to academics, recipients are selected based upon their overall commitment and dedication to one of the following areas: English, Science, Social Studies, Mathematics, Career & Technology, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, Athletics, another specific field of study (At-Large), and the Valedictorian and Salutatorian from each high school.

Congratulations to the 45 distinguished students and their inspirational teachers.

Tonight’s Distinguished Student Awards presentation is a celebration of everything that McKinney ISD represents. We are here tonight to honor 45 students who have earned the highest level of recognition at the end of their elementary and secondary school years. We would like to thank the parents, teachers and administrators that have helped influence these students along the way. In addition to these exceptional students, we will be honoring some of McKinney ISD’s finest teachers. Each student was asked to select the teacher who made the most significant impact on his/her life. Inspirational Teacher: Carol Winters—HumanitiesMs. Winters inspired me to look at writing from a new perspective: what I oncedismissed as subjective became valuable through measured analysis and meaningful dialogue. In this, she broadened my academic horizons, encouraging the love of learning itself. Further, she introduced me to literary criticism, something I never would have considered before, but is now an integral part of my life. Altogether, Ms. Winters’ teaching provided a more complete perspective on both education and the wider world.

Inspirational Teacher: Deanne Pratt—AP Calculus Mrs. Pratt creates a positive learning environment, allowing students to have fun while also creating a safe place to ask questions. She challenges you (she does teach AP Calculus, after all) but also has a classroom full of laughter, competition and weird memory tricks. Mrs. Pratt has inspired me to be a better person—to be a person like her. Thank you, Mrs. Pratt.

Inspirational Teacher: Terry Walter—CalculusMr. Walter is always smiling. This contagious charisma carries over to his interactions with students and his Calculus AB class. After a year with Mr. Walter and Calculus AB in a happy, student-friendly environment, my perception of calculus changed. I began to enjoy math and will take more calculus courses at Rice. Mr. Walter’s teaching style was effective as I was both happy in class and did well on the AP exam.

Inspirational Teacher: Ty Muennink—Art & Student CouncilMr. Muennink has been my teacher all four years of high school, first as my Art I teacher and AP3D art teacher, then as our school’s student council advisor. He has always encouraged me to be the best that I can be in both my art and my life. Mr. Muennink initially prompted me to join student council, opening my eyes to a world of opportunity. When each opportunity came my way, Mr. Muennink believed in me more than I believed in myself.
