    COMPLIANCE UPDATE

    By Mindy Prescott

an effort to improve the curb appeal and

verall look of the neighborhood, the following

ems will be addressed in the coming months:

    Landscaping:The planting of shrubs along

e front of the home is critical to the look

Craig Ranch as is maintaining good lawn

alth and strong, healthy trees. During my

eekly property inspections, I have found

any of you who proudly keep your properties

oking nice. However, there are a few homes

    at could use some TLC.

the coming weeks, the following items will

addressed as they apply to each homeown-

: stone landscape edging repair, trimming of

rubs & trees, the need for additional shrubs,

moval of weeds, dead plant material and ad-

tion of fresh mulch, missing trees, missing

ass, and proper storage of garden hoses.

    Fences: Unfortunately, our builder grade

ood fences are really starting to show their

    e. I see many fences that are leaning, have

oken slats and panels that are attached with

re or zip ties. If this is you, it may be time

to consider that fence replacement. The wood

fences in Craig Ranch are considered shared

fences and therefore the cost should be shared

    amongst neighbors.

In the coming weeks, the following fence items

will be addressed as they apply to each home-

owner- fence stain, replacement of broken

slats, properly resecure fence panels, replace

entire fence, fence posts and horizontal rails

should not be visible from public view, and

fence leaning. Fence stains and fence r

ments must be approved by the CRCA b

    any work is done.

Please take some time to properly in

your landscaping and your fence to see

of the above applies to you. If you rec

    courtesy notice regarding your landscap

    fence repair/replacement, PLEASE conta

    via email ([email protected]) to

know that you are aware and provide a

line as to when you think the work will be

Once I hear from you, I can note your ac

that the item will be addressed and res

within an agreed timeline. This is the onl

    to avoid a second notice.

I understand that this can be quite the end

to take on, but if we all work together, Iwe can make Craig Ranch a place we are

to call home. Imagine if we all cleaned

landscape beds and replaced that old fe

applied a fresh coat of stain? Our nei

    EVENT

ell, its almost pool season and

ere looking forward to a fun

    d exciting 2014.

e are continuing with our weekly

    yper-chlorination program, this

    ason so Riverwalk, Heming-

ay, and The Retreat pools will be

osed on Mondays and the Latigo

ool will be closed on Tuesdays.

his schedule will shift during 4th

July and for the Memorial Day

    d Labor Day holidays depend-

g how they fall in the week.

s a reminder, here are some ways

    ensure an enjoyable swimming

    perience.

ways abide by the pool rules.

he pool rules are posted to en-

    re the environment remains safe

    d enjoyable for all users.

ake sure your bathing suit is

    clean and well rinsed. Residu-

al soap and detergent from the

    washing machine contaminates

    the pool water with phosphates.

Phosphates not only cloud the wa-

ter and cause foam but also serve

as a food source for algae. Al-

    ways shower before entering the

pool. Doing so will help keep the

    water crystal clear.

    Apply tanning lotion after exiting

the pool or well before getting to

the pool. All too often parents ap-

ply lotion on their children just

    before allowing them to swim.

This does not allow time for the

sunscreen to soak into the skin be-

fore being washed off by the poolwater. The result is an ineffective

sunscreen and a lotion slick on the

surface of the pool that sticks to

the tile and clogs the lters. Wa-

    terproof tanning lotions work best

but must be given time to soak

into the skin to be completely ef-

    fective.

Use swim diapers on your young

children to help prevent fecal con-tamination. In the event of a fe-

    cal contamination, the pool will

be shut down immediately and in

most cases, not reopened until the

next day. This is to ensure proper

disinfection has taken place and to

    ensure the health and safety

    users of the pool.

    By following these simple

lines, we can help ensurhealthy environment of the

    and provide an enjoyable su

    of pool activities.

ompanies here and in other countries around

e world are on task to change the light bulb!

ew lighting standards are in place to posi-

    vely affect the environment. Incandescent

ght bulbs are being phased out. Light bulbs

e being designed to be much more efcient,

ve energy and ultimately save you money.

hree types of light bulbs available are the

mpact uorescent lamp (CFL), Halogenmps, and light emitting diode (LED).

ere is what I learned in types of light bulbs.

FL is said to use one-fth to one-third the

ectric power, and may last eight to fteen

mes longer than the incandescent lamps

but contains mercury. The Halogen lamps

are a type of incandescent light bulb but are

said to be 40% more efcient. LEDs contain

no mercury, and it is being determined that

LEDs have a much smaller environmental im-

pact than incandescent bulbs. LEDs turn on

instantly at any temperature, their extremely

long lifetime is unaffected by cycling on and

off, they have no glass to break, and they

don't emit UV rays that fade artwork, uphol-

stery, and clothing. Another positive is LED

lamps do not radiate heat onto the illum

    surface.

In an article from the Department of E

In 2012, about 49 million LEDs were ins

in the U.S. -- saving about $675 million

nual energy costs. Switching entirely to

lights over the next two decades could

the U.S. $250 billion in energy costs, r

    electricity consumption for lighting by

    50 percent and avoid 1,800 million m

    tons of carbon emissions.

WOW, right? Sounds impressive but wh

you and I begin? And have you priced L

While LEDs are more expensive now

still will save money because they are s

last longer and have very low energy use

similar to other electronics, the costs a

pected to lower as more and more LED

bulbs become available. Perhaps the wmanage and save energy, carbon emissio

    well as reduce electricity consumption

by bit. As one incandescent bulb goes o

place it with a LED light bulb.

So how many people does it take to cha

    light bulb? Everyone!

Unusually mild weather might cause some buds on owering shrubs to bloom prematurely. These ower buds will not rebloom in springhere will be enough of the unopened buds to ower at their appropriate time. Forsythia, viburnum, owering quince, weigela, and magnoliaften bloom sporadically during warm periods in late fall or early winter.

Continue to cut branches for forcing indoors. Branches with interesting foliage as well as owering branches can be forced. Prune carefsing proper pruning techniques and cutting off only those branches that are not essential to the plants basic shape. Branches should be atfoot long, full of fat ower buds, and cut on a day above freezing. Lay the branches in a bathtub lled with room-

emperature water. Make crosscuts in stem ends or smash woody ends with a hammer to allow quick uptakef water. Keep branches in a cool room out of direct sunlight and change the water every other day. Whenhe buds color up or the foliage begins to unfurl, arrange the branches in a vase and display them in aool room out of direct sunlight.

Heavy pruning of large woody plants can be done this month, weather permitting. To avoid sacric-ng spring ower display, prune large owering trees and shrubs after they bloom in spring. Fruitrees are best pruned in late February or early March.

f tree branches become covered with ice, let the ice melt gradually rather than cracking the icewith a heavy object. If large evergreen branches become anchored to the snow, gently sweep snowwith a soft broom and then elevate the branch from underneath. Using heavy or sharp objectsike shovels to remove snow on trees risks cutting the tree bark and creating a point of entry forisease or insects.

Check newly planted softwood trees for frost cracks or sunscald injury that might occur whenwinter temperatures uctuate dramatically from a sunny warm day to a subzero night. Considerwrapping vulnerable tree trunks with protective wrap in fall and removing it in early spring.

f weather is unusually warm, avoid pruning trees that will "bleed," or discharge large amounts ofwater, such as elms, maples and birches. Prune these trees only when weather is quite cold or in sum-mer. Immediately prune out broken or damaged branches.
