welcomeCancer is not one disease. In fact, it is a group of perhaps thousands

of different diseases which share some common characteristics. For this reason cancer treatments are very complex and increasinglypersonalized. At McLeod, we have a team approach to diagnosing andtreating this disease. Physicians representing various specialties, nurses, research staff, tumor registrars, rehabilitation therapists andpharmacists, all collaborate in recommending treatment plans for ourcancer patients, especially in challenging cases.

For more than 35 years, McLeod has been the only comprehensivecommunity cancer program accredited by the Commission on Cancer ofthe American College of Surgeons in the region. Commission on Cancer-accredited programs demonstrate excellence in various key elementswhich are crucial to the treatment of a complex group of diseases. Thisincludes offering state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment facilities, acancer conference board, tumor registry, and quality improvementprograms.

In addition to state-of-the-art clinical programs, we provide urgentlyneeded educational and support services for families coping with this challenging illness. We alsoplay a critical role in funding the greatest source of hope for all cancer patients and people at riskfor the disease: research.

As the Cancer Center for this region, we are proud that McLeod Health made the commitmentto unify and improve upon this excellence by opening the McLeod Center for Cancer Treatment &Research in 2014. We are fully aware that the number of patients who will be diagnosed in thecoming decades will increase dramatically as the baby boomers age. The facilities, technology andteam approach which has been established here at McLeod will be ready to take on this challengein the coming years.

The McLeod Cancer Center serves as a focal point for the next generation of cancer care in our region, providing patients and their families with the highly sensitive, sophisticated andpersonal care they expect and deserve. It offers additional space with the patient’s comfort inmind, expanded access to preventative medicine, individualized treatment focusing on eachpatient’s diagnosis, care and recovery, as well as state-of-the-art technology.

Cancer Resource Guide2

We believe that each person is a unique individual, entitled to clarity, dignity, honesty and respect.

As part of our commitment to quality, we conduct clinical research and reach out to the

community we serve. We recognize the intricacies of a cancer diagnosis, and understand that an

individual with cancer is not only being treated for the disease itself, but is a complex human being whose

diagnosis impacts the whole person, physically, emotionally and spiritually, as well as the entire family

and support system. Our goal is to provide care, education, and avenues of support to address these

complex needs in a professional, yet comforting, environment. We are dedicated to compassionately

serving all those who come to us and believe not only in the power of knowledge, but also in the power

of perseverance and hope.

T he mission of McLeod Cancer Services is to provide holistic, high-quality and service-oriented care,

education and research to oncology patients and their families in a safe and efficient manner.

Water, the symbol of life and renewal, is an integral part of the design of our Cancer Center.

It reminds us of strength, direction and hope. The motif of a gently flowing stream, with no

beginning and no end, connects the radiation oncology unit with medical oncology. The

infinity of the stream symbolizes the continuous journey, the ebb and flow, of cancer

treatment and recovery. A break in the stream represents the sometimes rocky and

challenging pathway to survivorship. Waterfalls continuously replenish the stream.

Stereotactic RadiosurgeryMcLeod Health has installed a “super” linear

accelerator with the goal of expanding treatment options forcancer patients in the region. This advanced technologyinvolves special equipment to position the patient andprecisely deliver a large radiation dose to a tumor in thebrain or body, reducing the amount of time during treatmentand resulting in fewer treatments. This form of radiationtherapy is called Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Advantages ofthis linear accelerator include the degree of precision itoffers, the submillimeter accuracy which minimizes harm tohealthy tissue and adjacent critical structures such as thespinal cord or lungs, and a platform that will move in sixdimensions to position the patient in the best possible wayfor treatment. In addition to the treatment of brain tumors, this unit can also be used to treat primary and metastaticlung and liver cancer depending on the size of the tumorand its location. Stereotactic body radiation therapy alsoprovides a treatment option for patients with early stagelung cancer who may not be candidates for surgery becauseof other medical conditions such as heart disease.

1950’s when data first began to be collected from cancerdiagnoses in this region of South Carolina. All cases ofcancer diagnosed and/or treated at McLeod are analyzed fordemographics, primary site, histology, diagnosis, stage ofdisease, treatment modalities, disease recurrence, andyearly follow-up status. These statistics are submitted to theSouth Carolina Central Cancer Registry and to the NationalCancer Data Base (NCDB), with the data being used forreporting and publication purposes. The Cancer Registry iscurrently following more than 9,295 cases diagnosed atMcLeod, with more than 21,000 cases included in theregistry since the reference year of 1994.

Lung Cancer Screening ProgramMcLeod offers a Lung Cancer Screening Program that is

coordinated by the Lung Oncology Navigator. The screening isrecommended for adults aged 55 to 80 years who have a 30pack-year smoking history (30 pack-year is equivalent to onepack per day for 30 years or two packs per day for 15 years)and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years.Participants in the McLeod Lung Cancer Screening Programreceive a low-dose CT scan; a professional reading andinterpretation of findings by a McLeod Radiologist who willeither recommend a one-year follow-up or further testing; freesmoking cessation counseling; results sent to their primarycare physician; and referrals to a pulmonologist orcardiothoracic surgeon if anything of concern is detected onthe scan. For more information, call the Lung OncologyNavigator at (843) 777-5640.

Lung Cancer Screening CenterMcLeod Regional Medical Center is designated as a

Lung Cancer Screening Center by the American College ofRadiology (ACR). McLeod is the only hospital in this part ofSouth Carolina to achieve this designation. In order to receivethis elite distinction, facilities must be accredited by the ACRin computed tomography (CT) in the chest module, as well asundergo a rigorous assessment of its lung cancer screeningprotocol and infrastructure. Also required are procedures inplace for follow-up patient care, such as counseling andsmoking cessation programs.

Interventional Radiology AdvancementsRecent advancements in Radiology at McLeod

Regional Medical Center have included a 320-slice CTscanner and enhanced imaging technology known asClearRead Bone Suppression. McLeod was the first hospitalin South Carolina to install both of these pieces of technologythat not only improve the safety of diagnostic testing, but alsoallow for earlier detection of diseases such as lung cancer.

Toshiba Aquilion ONE 320-slice CTThis CT scanner offers patients access to

unprecedented technology that provides faster, more preciseresults and shorter procedure times, thereby reducing theamount of radiation exposure patients receive. It is also theworld’s first CT system capable of showing organ function inreal time and the only system capable of imaging bone and softtissue in motion.

ClearRead Bone SuppressionThis software is the most significant advancement in

chest radiography since digital imaging became available.Using the world’s most common imaging exam, the chest X-ray, this technology enhances the clarity of digital imagesby removing bone, giving radiologists and physicians abetter opportunity to spot underlying diseases that might gounnoticed on a traditional chest X-ray. Patients receivediagnoses at earlier stages when more treatment options are available and survival rates are higher.

McLeod Breast Health CenterThe first in the region to achieve a Breast Imaging

Center of Excellence designation by the American College of Radiology (ACR) and accreditation by the NationalAccreditation Program for Breast Centers, the McLeod BreastHealth Center promotes continuity of care by providing thefull spectrum of services for women, from prevention anddiagnosis to treatment and support. The goal is to make theindividual patient’s entry into the system as painless andseamless as possible. McLeod also provides the latest inbreast health technology with three digital mammographyunits located in Breast Imaging at McLeod Regional MedicalCenter and a fourth digital mammography unit located on theMcLeod Mobile Mammography Unit. Additionally, the BreastHealth Center collaborates with the McLeod Foundation,Komen South Carolina and the American Cancer Society toprovide free screening and diagnostic mammograms andultrasounds to low income women with no insurancecoverage or hospital only insurance.

AblationState-of-the-art, minimally invasive cancer therapies

available at McLeod include radiofrequency, microwave andcryoablation of tumors in the lung, liver and kidneys. Thesemodalities use a specific type of energy to thermally ablateor kill tumors. Each procedure requires the CT-guidedplacement of one or more probes into a tumor by anInterventional Radiologist. Ablation is achieved by usingextremely high or low temperatures. Most procedures areperformed on an outpatient basis and patients return to their normal activities the following day.

PET/CTWith a continued focus on quality care and improved

patient experience, McLeod Regional Medical Centerrecently became the first hospital in the state to install theSiemens Biograph mCT, an innovative PET/CT scannerwhich offers accurate, fast and comfortable exams for awide range of patients. The new PET/CT scanner offersexceptional patient comfort with a large 78-cm cylinder. Itsopen design and fast scan times may help patients feel lessclaustrophobic. The unit’s innovative dose-reductiontechnologies also minimize patient exposure to radiation.Additionally, the system’s fast scan times result in lesspatient motion, optimizing both image quality and the overallpatient experience. Exams that previously lasted 40 minutesare now performed in less than 20 minutes. The combinedPET/CT technology also increases the physician’s ability todiagnose diseases that may have previously remainedunidentified. Oncologists can characterize the tiniest cancerlesions more precisely, which permits better staging andmonitoring of changes in activity over time. This allows for amore accurate assessment of treatment response.

HOPE Resource CenterOne of the best ways to meet the challenges

associated with a cancer diagnosis is for patients to becomeactive participants in their care by educating themselvesabout their specific type of cancer. The HOPE ResourceCenter within the McLeod Center for Cancer Treatment &Research houses a variety of resources to assist patients inbetter understanding their diagnosis, side effects oftreatment and long-term survival issues. It also serves as aresource to family members, caregivers, survivors, community members, students and staff.

HOPE FundThe HOPE (Helping Oncology Patients Everyday) Fund

is overseen by a group of community members who havebeen touched by cancer either as a patient or caregiver. Thisadvisory group approves the funding of cancer patient supportservices such as transportation, nutrition and medicationassistance as well as provides oncology staff with improvedaccess to immediate fund needs for patients. The Fund alsosupports the HOPE Coordinator, the Cancer Center’s volunteerprogram and educational resources for patients and families.

Massage Therapy StudentsAn evidence-based program in cancer care, massage

therapy has been proven beneficial for patients undergoingcancer treatment. This form of therapy reduces pain, increasesrelaxation, decreases muscle tension and stimulates thelymphatic system. McLeod has a partnership with CentralCarolina Technical College in Sumter that not only helps cancerpatients treated at the hospital, but also assists the massagetherapy students in meeting their program requirements. The students offer hand and arm massages once a week tocancer patients receiving infusion treatment at McLeod as aninpatient or outpatient. The purpose of the massage therapyinternship is to enhance the treatment experience of thepatients and meet the training and clinical requirements of thestudents. During their clinical rotations at McLeod, the studentinterns are also directly supervised by an instructor.
