McNeese head coach Tommy Tate- he’s the second former McNeese footballplayer to serve as the university’s headcoach...the first was the late Jack Dolandwho coached the Cowboys from 1970 to1978, led them to a conference title and tobowl appearances in the IndependenceBowl (1976 victory over Tulsa) and in theGrantland Rice Bowl (1971 loss to Tennes-see State)...Doland was also the McNeeseathletic director and went on to become theuniversity’s president and to serve as a statesenator...he had played for the Cowboys inthe 1940s when the school was a junior col-lege and he went on to play for Tulane when it went to the RoseBowl- Tate played for Doland as he was a four year letterman from 1975to 1978..he was a defensive back and earned all-conference aca-demic honors- in 1979 he stepped off the field and into the coaching box...in thesummer of 1979 Doland was named the president of the universityand Ernie Duplechin became the McNeese head coach, picking Tateto become his secondary coach- Tate had served as a McNeese assistant coach for 20 years (oneseason was spent as the school’s placement director)- he was the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator in 1999and became head coach in 2000...he now has an 20-8 overall recordand has the Cowboys undefeated at 4-0 this season....and rankedNo. 2 in 1-AA

MARTIN GETS RECORD Jermaine Martin has become McNeese State’sall-time leading pass receiver. In the first gameof the season he became the all-time leader forpass receptions and in the Cowboys’ third gamehe took overthe leader-ship foryards catch-ing passes.In his careerwith theC o w b o y she has nowcaught 128passes for2,062 yardsand ninet o u c h -downs. - in victory over Western Kentucky last Saturday, McNeese junior B. J. Sams set a school record with 316all-purpose yards....it broke the mark of 304 that had been set by Tony Citizen in 1986....there is no record for thiscategory in the Southland Conference while the national 1-AA record of 467 yards was set by former WesternKentucky player Joey Stockton against Austin Peay in 1995......in his record 316 yards last Saturday were 8 yardsrushing, 111 pass receiving, 89 on punt returns and 108 on kickoff returns......he is now averaging 206.8 yards pergame all-purpose running.....he is one of the nation’s leaders in punt and kickoff returns this year....he has run twopunts back for touchdowns and is averaging 20.5 yards per return and is averaging 27.1 yards on kickoff returns....heis also tied for the team lead in pass receiving with 11 catches....SAMS EARNED his second SLC player of theweek honor for his performance against Western Kentucky...he had earlier been recognized against Young-stown State- JERMAINE “Flea” MARTIN

About McNeese StateMcNeese State is located in Lake Charles, LA, a city of80,000 in the Southwest part of Louisiana. McNeese wasestablished in 1939 as a junior college and a division ofthe Louisiana State University system. It later brokeaway becoming McNeese State. The school is namedfor John McNeese, the first superintendent of educationin Calcasieu Parish (the parish in which Lake Charles islocated).
