Summer Camps Kick-Off for Park & Recreation Summer Day Camps Kick Off Mecklenburg  County  Park  and  Recreation  De‐

partment’s Summer Day Camp programs will be 

in  full swing starting Monday  June 18th   and  run 

through August 17th.   Various camps throughout 

Mecklenburg County  at our Recreation Centers, 

Nature Centers, Aquatic facilities and in our parks 

provide fitness, sports, outdoor adventure, swim‐

ming,  crafts,  cultural  arts,  trips  and most  of  all 

fun. We still have a few spots available in various

Nations Baseball 1st Round for State Games of the Carolina’s Tournament

On June 9‐10 youth boy’s baseball games were held at Hornet’s 

Nest  Park,  Nevin  Park  &  Renaissance  Park.  There  were  124 

teams playing in the regional tournament. Nineteen teams (8 & 

under) and  (9 & under) played at Hornet’s Nest Park. Eighteen 

teams  (10 & under) competed at Nevin Park.       Teams traveled 

from across the state to play in these tournaments and all games 

started at 9:00am on Saturday and Sunday.  

AAU Sand Volleyball Tournament: Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation partnered with the North Carolina AAU to host the first AAU Sand Volleyball Tourna‐ment at Jeff Adams Tennis Center.    Over 20 young ladies com‐peted in this two person team competition on Sat‐urday, June 9.  Youth Sand Volleyball is growing across the state and Park and Recreation will continue to partner with the AAU to host clinics and tourna‐ments at Jeff Adams Tennis Center to help grow the game in Charlotte.    The next tournament is scheduled for Saturday, June 23.  For more infor‐mation contact Pre‐ston.Buckman@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov. 

As Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation’s Master Naturalist Program Coordinator, Staci Clark has been working diligently, formulating Park and Recreation’s first ever adult Central Carolinas Master Naturalist Program. Staci recently completed over  80 hours of training with the University of Clemson’s South Carolina Master Naturalist Program.  (Continued on Next Page)

Nature Centers' Staff Training:

On June 6 Environmental Educators and Outdoor Recreation specialists met for a full day of training to gear up and be ready for summer camps. Staff learned camp songs, policies, procedures, emer‐gency protocols and tricks of the trade.   Staff can’t wait to have campers at the nature pre‐serves hitting the trails and enjoy the great out‐doors. 

Volunteer Opportunities

Many Helping Hands The Harris YMCA Teen Day Campers spent time this week working at Firestone Park.  Their task 

was to use loppers to cut down invasive plant called eleagnus.  They were also asked to raise the 

branch line to six feet over the woods path.    Those 21 young teens performed exceedingly well.  

The nearby neighbors came out and thanked them for their work.   This was a very good public 

volunteer experience. 

(Continued from Page 2) This has provided her with insight into developing our program. The first fall semester of our Master Naturalist Program is already full and Spring has a waiting list. Partici‐pants will focus on natural history topics such as botany and ornithology while gaining first hand field experience. Trainees then give back to the community by volunteering a minimum of 40 hours. This Memorial Weekend, Staci will also be serving as a lead naturalist with Discovery Place’s Blue Ridge Discovery Weekend.  If you would like more information about the Cen‐tral Carolinas Master Naturalist Program please email Staci at Mas‐ter.Naturalist@mecklenburgcountync.gov  

Recreational News from Mecklenburg Communities

Revolution Sport Academy and Youth Sports Youth Soccer & Flag Football Registration: Fall Soccer & Flag Football registration will be held July 1 ‐ July 31. Practices will begin in August and games will begin in September. The 8 game regular season will be followed up by a single elimination countywide tournament for ages 7 and up.   The registration fee is $65 per individual and includes uniform and award.  For more information about upcoming youth sports programs please email YouthSports@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov  or call Revolu‐tion Park Sports Academy at (704) 432‐4963.  2012 Countywide Youth Baseball Post Season Tournament:  The 2012 Countywide Youth Baseball Tour‐nament will kick off its first round of play on Thursday, June 14th at 6:15 pm at Park Road Park. Tourna‐ment play will continue on Friday at 6:15pm as fields 1, 2, 3 and 4 see action late into the evening. On June 16th, “Championship Saturday” will provide semi‐final and championship games beginning at 9:00am and running through 4:00pm. All games for the tournament will be played at Park Road Park and will encompass teams from the 7‐8, 9‐10 and 11‐12 age divisions. Out of 62 total teams, the top 23 have advanced to compete in the tournament this weekend. The youth sports development staff would like to wish all the teams good luck as they compete for the top prize of Countywide Champions!  For more in‐formation about the tournament please email YouthSports@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov  or call Revolu‐tion Park Sports Academy at (704) 432‐4963.

 Nature Preserves and Natural Resources has partnered with the Community, Partners for Parks, as well as various park divisions to make the realization of usable amenities available at Clarks Creek Nature Pre‐serve.  In challenging fiscal times, innovative funding ideas and collaborative partnerships have paved the way for great opportunities here.  

More about Clarks Creek Nature Preserve This 98.6 acre nature preserve consists of over 70 acres of open fields and about 28 acres of forest. A tributary of Clarks Creek runs through the property. There are also small wetlands and a pond. The variety of habitats here, along with the presence of water, makes Clarks Creek Nature Preserve an ecologically diverse property and an excellent place for wildlife.

Upcoming Events & News

Pick Your Poision 5K and 10K Races   Davidson Timing and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation partnered to host the Pick Your Poison 5K 

and 10K at the new Abersham Park property.  Over 150 participants competed in the inaugural event, 33 running the 10K and 120 finishing the 5K.  The 5K portion of the event was part five (5) of the ROC Series 2012 (Running for our Communities).  The ROC is a nine (9) race series which awards winners of individual races as well as overall series champions.  The goal of the series is to help raise money for the many chari‐ties that they support including Partners For Parks.  For more information on the ROC visit www.rocseries.com or contact Preston.Buckman@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov. 

 

The Horticulture Team is looking for part time help (temporary) along the Little Sugar Creek Green‐way.  This could include Saturday work.  Candidates will  learn a lot about many different plants and work with some super people.  8‐16 hrs. are being offered per week.  Call Tim Turton at 704.549.5617 or Timo‐thy.Turton@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

 Peter Cook: For bringing his jet ski and offering rides, James Rainey & Milton Bowen: For making sure the grill, drinks, and coolers were on location the day of and Milton again for assisting with preparation and set up be‐fore the employees arrived (Milton was on it!!!) Kevin Metcalf, Stephen Hutchinson, and the staff at Latta: They made sure we had access to the canoes, fishing, as well as supplying equipment for games and activities. They never hesitated to make sure we had everything we needed to make the picnic FUN and ENGAGING!!!   Michael Kirschman aka “The Ice Cream Man” for bringing ice cream as a special touch for the day!   Luther Williams: For MASTERING the grill!!!
