Founded by Arch. Momo Andrea Destro and associated with Arch. Margret Luise Domko, MDDM studio,based

in Bejing, is a design practice composed by professionals belonging to different disciplines of the creative

industries, located in Europe and Asia, collaborating to the definition of a comprehensive philosophy of

the design. MDDM studio’s interests concern every aspect of the design practice, from interior design to

architectural design, from urban planning to landscapedesign, from product design to graphic design, seeing all

those creative approaches as different interpretations of a larger concept.

MDDM Studio is at the moment working on several interior and architectural works in Beijing and Europe.

Services

The Team of MDDM Studio develops specific skill in different types of projects. During the years several kinds of

designs has been implemented, crossing different fields.

In Temporary design, MDDM Studio designed commercial fairs, temporary pavilions both indoor and outdoor,

including curatorial organization.

In Interior Design MDDM Studio works both in medium and large scale, including Shopping Mall, Retail,

Showroom, Restaurant and Private Residential project. The firm is able to develop the project from the first

phase of concept till construction site supervision guarantying the design quality in all phases of the project

rendering it into a high quality realization. At the moment MDDM Studio is working on headquarter office space

for a Developer, a residential apartment and a Restaurant in Beijing.

In a larger scale, MDDM Studio is specialized in Architecture Design and Urban Planning. In these fields MDDM

Studio participated and won several international competitions and is gaining a name with a smart approach

on the design with deep understanding of the projects environment and special reguard the eco sustainable

strategy. The team has worked in different typologies of architecture design from public functions (museums

and service centers) to private owned buildings such as Winery, Office Building, Atelier and Shopping Mall. The

experience acquired in the construction of several building both in Europe and in China gives to MDDM Studio a

deep understanding of the construction process making it able to render innovative design into a high quality

realization. At the moment MDDM Studio is working in a resort in the outskirt of UlanBatoor (Mongolia), a

Residential Tower in UlanBatoor and a BrandDesign Center in Beijing.

With the research program “Anti-Tectonics” (in collaboration with Giannantonio Bongiorno and Eugenia

Murialdo), Momo Andrea Destro is involved in research and promotion of innovative approach to urban planning

integrating the concept of Smart City into the design of new settlements especially studied for developing

countries.

Momo Andrea Destro (1979), founder and director of MDDM Studio, is an

italian architect graduated at the Architecture Faculty of Florence in 2007.

Since 2008 he is a Class A architect, registered in “Albo dell’Ordine degli

Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori della Provincia di Pis-

toia” (www.architettipistoia.it/). From 2008 to 2010 he served at Studio

Archea , first in Florence and later in Beijing. From 2010 till beginning of

2012 has been the director of the Studio Archea Beijing. Together with

the management of the Beijing office, he has been coordinator of the

Chinese edition of Area magazine and Form@ magazine.

ban-Rural develpment under the research of Smart city. In 2014 he has become ufficially named Expert for

the IEC ( International Electrotechnical Commission) for the Systems Evaluation Group 1 Working Group 3

(IEC/SEG1-WG3) on City Facilities Management (CFM) chaired by Dot. Wanbiyu. This reasearch and collab-

oration dot. Wanbiyu of the ministry is focusing more and more on the development of ecosustainable and

smart industrial park in China.

“Shan Shui Grape Garden” proposal is based on three strategies: 1) Encourage the integration between the

important natural, economic, productive, social and cultural aspects of the territory though the introduction

of key hubs of high technology functions integrated into the grape and fruit fields to create points of interest

for the visitors and development for the local community; 2) Extend the accessibility for visitors to different

kind of habitats: woods, agriculture, wetlands along the river, to promote a deeper understanding of the

territory, local products and farming/production processes; 3) A low maintenance countryside garden, which

means sustainable in a time perspective throughout the years to come and sensitive to the specific character

of the territory. A park that will grow with nature and not against it, respecting the existing natural elements,

such water canals or lines of trees, that will be used as design elements and integrated into an evolving

ecological network which will later develop and embrace the whole territory.

The project proposes the insertion of three “ECOLOGICAL RIBBON ROUTES”, working as line parks on

which unique activities and functions are located, placed onto a large VINYARDS CARPET which will define

the ubiquitous back-ground and main character of the new grape park. The three “ECOLOGICAL RIBBON

ROUTES” run through the plot from west to east. The number of 3 has been chosen to represent the 3

ecologies from the territory: water, agriculture and woods/mountains. Each of these routes works as a line-

park and has been designed with a different character.

The design for the main GREEN HOUSE and Horticultural Centre to host the Grape Exhibition in 2014 will

express the values of authenticity and renewed identity of Yanqing County. This will be achieved conjugating

very modern high standard technology aspects with the ones from the local tradition. The Green House

develops along five sections corresponding to the five continents from which grapes are coming.

The design considers the appropriate integration of modern bioclimatic and energy saving systems.

The “tasting” hub of the project is represented by the DISPLAY WINERY building on the central axis. The

group of building includes a RESTAURANT with terraces facing the waters, a HOTEL with few rooms, a

WINERY to show the process of wine making and a MARKET where to buy local products.

A key aspect of a vibrant wine district is to suggest the idea that wine becomes a part of the local cultural

background and history. This can only be achieved by involving the local communities of farmers. The design

proposal extends the project to three villages facing the area making them become part of the park. Inside

the villages some typical old abandoned houses will be restored and turned into a COURTYARD HOTEL for

city visitors in search of a true countryside taste and experience. The proposal of a Hotel with few rooms

widespread into the villages aims to improve this image of authentic cultural identity and to become an

important territorial source of economic activity and vitality.

本方案提出了三个镶嵌的“生态环带”,作为带状公园,设定唯一的活动和功能,并被放置在大片葡

萄园绿毯中,明确葡萄园的大背景和新葡萄园的主要角色。三个“生态环带”园内自西向东穿过。 对

数字“三”的选择来源于对场地中三种生态型态的表述,水、农业和林业/山脉。 每个环带作为一个

带状公园和被设计为一个不同的角色。外表面将包括葡萄采摘区、展示区、实验种植园、不同品种葡

萄展示区,与水果园相伴,并找出水源,水池和池塘。铺设的公共广场将会提供一个能够适应不同种

The renewed attention of producers for the vineyards and the wine, due to the vigorous growth of an increasingly

selective market, has forced wineries to create architectures that combine the functionality and the taste for beauty,

the constant challenge of the new tradition, the theme of the landscape and the respect for nature.

Through the architecture of the wineries, you can read and interpret technological development over time and the

various aesthetic trends of designers who have grappled with a subject as difficult as fascinating as specific as global.

AIn past times the cellar was largely underground, protected from temperature changes, often built of masonry

with great skill and placed in local, meander through the underground homes and villas also of great architectural

importance. Projects are largely construction of cellars built in far away lands newly conquered by the wine growing

course that has imposed the need to interpret these new buildings the value of an old tradition.

The project represents a very interesting challenge, the Yanqing territory that is an hour from Beijing, is completely

immersed in nature, represents a clear break from the big MEGALOPOLIS. The requirements of the levy document

included the creation of a belt linking the various wineries spread over a distance of 50 km, the question we have self

posed is how we could create something unique in this area, how to exploit the natural resources of site and begin

creating a project that from now to 2020 will include these provinces, in one of the most important world wine for

production. We want to create a natural link connecting the three provinces, in which are located the clusters with a

mix of specific functions:wineries, markets, hotels, research center. For the realization of this masterplan we think

that the visitors since the arrived in Yanqing , will leave their car in an exchanger parking and use electric vehicles

for their mobility. The design of viability is essentially based on two types of streets: bicycle-electric vehicles road,

driveway. Our viability is designed with strong landscape points, creating a strong relationship between the visitor,

the nature and the sightseeing points, that has the aim to link with public spaces and public green park the small

towns, now spread in the site. The design of the cluster brings many benefits from the ecological point of view, less

is to create a close connection between nature-man-architecture. For the production of the wine we plan to put the

cellars underground in order to create the ideal conditions for storage and aging of wine, without waste of energy. We

are planning systems for the reuse of the gray water, to produce energy we use the wind power and biomass systems.

The creation of an ambitious project as that of the provinces of Yanqing, should consider choices of cutting-edge

systems, that allow this alley to become a global benchmark for the production of wine and can’t regardless urban

and architecture strong choices and solutions that become the essential conditions for the creation of this new plan.

Starting from a critical analysis of the location to understand the genius loci, the sustainable

development has to preserve and improve this peculiarity.

Genius loci or “spirit of place” usually refers to a location’s distinctive atmosphere: to the

unique, distinctive and cherished aspects of a place.

JXZ Island’s Genius loci is the agricultural habitat and land and its proximity to Nanjing

metropolitan area.

By 2015 about 26 cities in the world are expected to have a population of 10 million or

more. To feed a city of this size – at least 6000 tonnes of food must be imported each

day. The reintroduction of agricultural activities inside the urban area starts to become an

important issue all over the world.

This proposal centres on agriculture habitat preservation and eco-sustainable development.

In the future scenario JXZ Island will be a high tech eco agricultural district located

in the centre of Nanjing metropolis, an advanced pilot project for urban agricultural and

veterinary research and production.

As Manuel Gausa says, instead of an old nostalgic pseudo bucolic ecology (which freezes landscape,

territories and environments), we suggest a bold ecology; re qualifying by virtue of being

reformulating. Based on the longer up on a timid, merely defensive – resistant- non-intervention,

but rather upon a non-imposed, projective and qualifying – re stimulating – intervention in synergy

with the environment and, also, with technology. Not only possible, but (re)developmental

as well.

An ecological preservation strategy in which to conserve implies always to intervene, but intervention

always starts from an existing potential of the site.

In the JZX Island this potential is the agricultural land. Preserved it means redevelop it at three

levels:

• As the new town spatial characteristic;

• As an economical resource;

• As an industries’ attractor.

The LVBO cluster, located in the northern part of the area, is conceived as an avant-garde technological

centre, and represents a model of reference for all the clusters of the plan.

The area is organized according to a quadrangular grid of 200x200 metres, contained in plots measuring

450x450 metres. Each is energetically independent, because the four squares within contains industrial

buildings and areas housing energy parks, with photovoltaic systems supplemented by micro wind power

plants.

The buildings, designed according to modules of 50x50 metres are built with avant-garde technologies

aimed at energy saving; they feature shed roofs facing north and accessible green areas united by suspended

bridges.

This area, which is separated from the residential ring by a large east-west thoroughfare axis with a 60

metres wide roadbed, is cut centrally by the main vertical directrix. Along these two arteries we find - inside

large solar parks with linear development that acts as buffers, softening the transition to the residential

area - phytodepuration plants, micro wind power plants and systems for experimentation with renewable

energies, in addition to a series of satellite buildings providing services to the industry and to the research

activities, volumetrically conceived as independent units with respect to the rest of the buildings in the area,

that feature an essentially regular arrangement.

Foreword

This project aims to be a pilot project to a touristic sustainable development of seaboard.

The site is in a wild field on the north coast in Hainan. Since now, this side of coast is

not densely urbanized.

This particular location demands a new design approach based on the urban sustainable

development. This new masterplan focuses on the real contemporary relational

systems, thus opposing itself to a traditional planning policy that aims to suppress the

internal differences and complexities of a wide problem.

Objectively the design of a masterplan should overrun the distinctions between architecture,

urbanism and infrastructure, develop continuous and mixed projects under

the lead of a new class of developers, and work on areas to be changed into a new

complex and eco friendly urban system in the respect of existing habitat.

The masterplan must integrate in a comprehensive, flexible design of various systems

which regulate the urban structure: infrastructures, green areas, facilities, leading

functions like residential and commercial structures.

The sustainable design aims to combine the principles of the smart growth, the new

urbanism and the green building.

The goal of this project is to establish the new standards for touristic development

practice based on the sustainable principles. Particularly this new way is directly link

with the improvement, optimisation of ecosystem, conserving natural quality and existing

habitat, so we are creating the new development capabilities to reduce the multiple

environmental impacts caused by new urban development.

The preliminary analysis of the project area shows three main characteristics, particularly binding for the design

of the masterplan:

- the presence of extensive agricultural and residential areas adjacent to large brownfield sites;

- the imposition from the city administration of a street system organized mostly on a non-modifiable

East West - North South grid;

- the subdivision of the resulting blocks in mono-functional macro areas.

Main goal of the masterplan is the design of the “not constructed “, all those areas surrounding and serving the

constructed fields, which are fundamental in order to maximize sustainability and livability of a city area and to

diminish the ecological print on the surrounding ecosystem.

The different use of the soil have various and, often, irreversible impacts that require huge activities of purifi-

cation and reclamation. The areas destined to prevailing green use will be therefore concentrated in those fields

currently little compromised and more easily purificated, while the site of previous industrial complexes will be

assigned to the construction of the new building sites.

An organized green system is therefore created, along four guiding directions, arranged on a North-South axis,

all connected by the planned green system along the river. After a process of purification and reclamation, the

relationship between constructed blocks and the river is re-established, thus becoming the center of the renova-

tion of the all area.

The masterplan also wants to improve the planned street grid, tied to the obsolete and not sustainable concep-

tion of focusing the public and private transportation on motor vehicles. Two highly ecosustainable longitudinal

aces of connection are designed: an outside ground public monorail along the area of respect identified by the

high tension electrical line; a cycle-pedestrian road independent from the main system, developing along green

areas placed in-between the constructed ones.

Concentrating the green areas, previously planned for every single block, inside this system, automatically the

surrounding fields are identified with high index of construction. It results into a substantial emancipation

from the imposed urban plan, emphasized by an eventual typological and functional diversification inside every

block. An abundant surface will be destined to exclusively pedestrian areas and, in proximity to the main streets

system, park exchangers and easy connections to the public transports will be provided.

Margret Luise Domko (1981), partner of MDDM Studio, is a German architect graduated at

the University of Applied Science in Rosenheim in 2004.

Since 2003 she was working for several architectural practices in Germany and New York

till she joined 2009 GMP architects in Beijing. In 2011 she started working for standardar-

chitecure as project manager and became partner associate in 2012.

University of computer science in Belgium in 2007.

Since 2008 he was working for several projects in china and he has started collaboration
