Key Features

Toyota LandCruiser 76, 78, 79 Series – Base Vehicles Since its release in 1951, the Toyota Landcruiser has evolved in some of the harshest off road environments in the world. The current J70 models continue to demonstrate the durability, steadfast reliability, and legendary off road performance we’ve come to expect from the Toyota LandCruiser. The Multidrive 6x6 System was designed to enhance these characteristics, taking this time proven workhorse to the next level.

Power Divider The MDT ‘Torque Manager’ power divider is a uniquely designed chassis mounted drive system. With no input required from the operator, the power divider provides constant drive to the mid and rear axles. The power divider avoids ‘wind-up’, along with ‘spin-up’ as it diverts drive to the axles maintaining traction. Mounting of the power divider to the chassis has two key advantages: The first is that the mass of the unit is carried on the vehicle, rather than the axle assemblies (as seen with ‘through’ or ‘bogie drive’ designs). This reduction in unsprung mass greatly reduces the work undertaken by the vehicles suspension, improving the lifecycle of shock absorbers, springs and associated components.

The second notable advantage is the separation of mid and rear drive shafts. The length of the rear shaft on a ‘through’ or ‘bogie drive’ system is greatly restricted by the distance between mid and rear axle assemblies. The MDT system is different. Separate drive shafts to mid and rear allows greater articulation of axle assemblies while remaining within acceptable drive line angles. This provides a fully loaded articulation of up to 250mm, contributing to the MDT 6x6’s superior off-road performance.

Load Share Suspension Another key feature of the MDT 6x6 is its heavy duty Load Share suspension. Two chassis mounted pivot arms are utilised as the central support for the mid and rear leaf packs. As load increases on either axle, the pivot arm automatically transfers a portion of that load to the other. This reduces the risk of overloading either axle assembly, and greatly improves the traction available in off road conditions. The system utilises heavy duty spring packs, along with ‘active’ bump stops that are designed to engage during normal operation. All suspension components are commercially off the shelf replaceable parts (COTS). This includes the use of OEM Toyota bushes and pins to further assist serviceability.

Payload Capacity The MDT 6x6 conversion is supported by a heavy duty chassis, designed to be strong but also maintain overall chassis flexibility. The join between the OEM chassis and the MDT system incorporates fully welded strengthening plates, an additional chassis cross member, and underside reinforcements running across and beyond the join. The use of OEM axle assembly components means that the overall rear axle ratings are maintained for mid and rear (both 2300kg), with a slight increase on the front (1480kg to 1540kg). The system has been thoroughly tested, and an overall GVM rating of 5750kg applied.

With the tare weight of the cab chassis Single and Dual cabs 2420kg and 2550kg respectively, there is significant 2500kg+ payload available with both variants.

Track Corrected Mid & Rear Axles To accommodate the introduction of V6 Petrol and V8 Diesel models in 2007, the front of all J70 Landcruisers (including the HZJ79) were widened to 1515mm. However the rear axle assembly remained unchanged, resulting in a 95mm track width difference front to rear. This discrepancy generates some stability issues in the 4x4 vehicles as the rear sways in its attempt to follow the wheel line of the front. This can be of particular concern when operating off road, heavily loaded, or while towing. MDT has developed an extended rear housing and axle assembly to address this issue in the 4x4. This track correction is also offered on the MDT 6x6. Our extended rear housings are re-manufactured OEM Toyota. The centre and stub ends are retained, with heavy duty hollow bar sections used to provide the extra width. These are fully welded into position along with reinforcements and spring pads. Finally the housing is carefully straightened and repainted. Our extended axles are machined from high grade forgings, before being heat treated and quality assessed. Axle splines have been designed to suit OEM Electronic Diff Locks, and consistently return destructive testing results between 10-15% higher than OEM. The effect of the track correction on the 4x4 and the 6x6 J70 is significant. The most simplistic measurement of improvement is the vehicles Static Stability Factor (SSF = Track Width / 2 x CG Height). With the track correction in place there is a SSF improvement of approximately 7%. However it is the stability improvement while operating which is most notable. The wider rear track significantly improves the vehicle footprint, providing a far more robust base for handling. The added stability, coupled with the 6x6 load share suspension, provides positive and consistent feedback to the driver, giving an overall sense of confidence in the vehicle.

Off-road Performance The core value for the MDT 6x6 has always been the ability to haul a significant 2500kg + payload into areas rarely seen by that category of vehicle. The combination of the MDT power divider, genuine Toyota axle assemblies (fitted with OEM diff locks), and the load share heavy duty suspension allows traction can be maintained and utilised in the most difficult of situations. Legendary Toyota LandCruiser performance and steadfast reliability is continued through all MDT componentry. Critical suspension and maintainable items are of the highest quality, and have been field proven for decades without issue. The low centre of gravity of the MDT 6x6 provides an increased level of stability. This is of particular importance with Fire Fighting and Emergency Response Vehicles carrying high volumes of water, or heavy equipment into steep, unpredictable areas. The LandCruiser cabin design is another feature not typically seen and with this category of vehicle. Most are high cab over (front axle) designs, which experience an increased level of body roll, along with shock loading directly under the cabin. Maintaining the Toyota LandCruisers low, rearward cabin position provides even more vehicle stability, while greatly improving operator comfort.

Serviceability As mentioned, genuine Toyota components have been maintained wherever possible throughout the MDT 6x6. Particular focus paid to key serviceable items, including hubs, seals, bearings and brakes. Where particular specialist items are required, these have been selected as commercially off the shelf (COTS) replaceable items. Core stock of MDT manufactured items will be available through our growing global network.
