Overcoming and Preventing Gambling addiction
Introduction
A young lady walked into a casino and stepped in front of a pop machine in the hall. She
put $1.00 in and out came a Pepsi. She put another $1.00 in and another Pepsi came out. She
repeated that a third time when a worker at the casino asked her What are you doing? The girl
responded, Duh! Winning! (OK, maybe that wasnt so funny, but) I brought up this joke to talk
about a serious issue among teenagers in todays society. Gambling Addiction. If you cannot
stop yourself from repeatedly betting money for a hope of better income then outcome, then you
are addicted to gambling. This obsession is as big as the ego of Tom Cruiseand Paris
Hiltoncombined! In the U.S, one out of every eight addicted gamblers is a teenager.
The reason why this topic is important is that teenagers are 2.5 times more likely to
become addicted than adults, according to Durand Jacobs, a psychologist. Teenagers are
generally more malleable or easily persuaded than adults, and their brains are not fully developed
yet, which is a reason why it is harder for them to stop the addiction. Preventing this addiction on
gambling is more important than curing the addiction. Several problems arouse when teenagers
are immersed in gambling. The first and most important issue is suicide or major injuries to their
own bodies or others. Think about the last time you were confident in an event turning in your
favor, only to find out that the whole thing just blew up right in your face.
A basic example for all students here can be that they studied excruciatingly hard to get a
good grade for a test or quiz. On the test day, you feel good before taking the exam, having
gotten rid of all body wastes and not feeling hungry (which is a serious distraction, by the way.)
You see all the other students cramming information minutes before the teacher hands out the
exam, and you softly laugh at yourself or in some cases, you boast aloud that you are more than
ready. When you take the exam, all the problems just seem so easy and you finish it first even
after checking answers over twice. You smile as bright as the sun when you hand the test in and
you whistle your way out of the classroom, amid all the glares from fellow classmates. The next
day, you receive your graded test expecting at the least a 99. However, the test you receive is full

of X marks and you get a C on the test. Disappointment and anger at yourself causes you to burst
out and receive taunts from fellow classmates. You cannot seem to figure out why you received
such bad marks, until you realize you read the directions very wrong on a few sections.
1st
Point
This scenario isnt as serious as gambling because you can make up for a bad test by
doing great on the next one. However, money lost in gambling can almost never be retrieved.
Gamblers believe that further gambling will bring back the money they lost previously. This
continuation causes bankruptcy and debt. In cases for teenagers, the money used for gambling
usually isnt theirs. Thousands of dollars are wasted and teenagers get in huge trouble with
severe consequences. The fear of such consequences, or the effect of the reprimand can cause
young adults to commit crime or to become suicidal. Family life, which is very important, can be
ruined if the teenagers continue their addiction and dont make an effort to stop.
Pathological gambling, which is being unable to control yourself from gambling, is
committed as a way to escape emotions of depression. The rave for money is a big factor that
persuades teenagers to gamble. According to scientific studies by Patrick J. Hurley, a doctor of
psychology, patients diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, commonly known as
ADD or ADHD, are prone to gamble and to become addicted due to uncontrollable behavior.
Despite popular belief, ADHD is also a serious problem, which affects about 5 percent of
children and distracts them from performing a single task for a long period. This issue stretches
out to college students in a huge excessively. One out of 20 college students are addicted to
gambling, which is a huge problem in colleges because it is hard to catch and easy to access
online. When a gambler cant stop thinking about the next time they will place a bet, it is called
compulsive gambling.
2nd
Point
The effects of gambling can be very detrimental to yourself and others. The most obvious
effects would be bankruptcy, harming yourself, and harming your family. Crime committed from
a compulsive gambler usually involves burglary, to gain more money to gamble yet another time.
Teenagers need to recognize the harmful effects gambling causes to themselves and to others
around them.
Teenagers can, however, carry themselves out of the pit of gambling. The most important
thing is for a gambler is to admit he or she has a problem. This is by far the toughest decision

anyone has to make. Almost everyone has favorite teams for sports, or at least supports their
countries in international sporting events such as the Olympics or even better, enjoys watching
YISS take on and beat other KAIAC and Far East teams. Rabid love for ones favorite team is
something common, as many brawls happen among fans from rival teams. True fans adore their
teams too much. Even if the team they love was last in the league, they would never admit that
they are in fact terrible. Acknowledging what is obvious can be at times very hard. Gamblers
have to recognize that this addiction isnt something you can turn off and on like a switch. Admit
the fact you are addicted and find ways to solve the problem, such as rehabilitation. Teenage
gamblers should avoid being in a situation where they can gamble, such as hanging around with
friends who gamble. Take steps of precaution and protect yourself from temptation, such as
blocking all gambling sites in your computer. Do not be secretive about your finances, as this can
lead to serious debt. The most effective way is to keep tallies on how you spend your money and
have another person help keep you accountable of where you spend your money.
3rd
Point
Gambling ruins lives. Preventing teenage compulsory gambling is a major step forward
for safety of families and individuals. Help others you know who are addicted to gambling. Most
importantly, dont even think about gambling yourself. As Kin Hubbard, an American cartoonist,
once said, The safest way to double your money is to fold it over once and put it in your
pocket
