• Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a standardized research method to evaluate the impacts of a product, process, or service through all stages of its life cycle (i.e., from materials extraction through manufacturing, use, and retirement).

• Impacts deal with sustainability, as in impacts to the environment, economics/ business, and society

– During the last decade, LCA made its way to the forefront of public decision making….

US Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007

• No Federal agency shall enter into a contract for procurement of an alternative or synthetic fuel, including a fuel produced from nonconventional petroleum sources, for any mobility-related use, other than for research or testing, unless the contract

specifies that the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions

associated with the production and combustion of the fuel supplied under the contract must, on an ongoing basis, be less than or equal to such emissions from the equivalent conventional fuel produced from conventional petroleum sources.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

• LCA is a research method standardized in ISO14040. – Scientific and engineering research

seeks to be repeatable and transparent.

– However, research can be implicitly driven by what the researcher views as critical to the results (i.e., the research scope).

– Thus, different researchers using the same research method with different research scopes and underlying data may obtain different results.

This can result in confusion for decision makers, especially when

select results are more widely disseminated.

ensure we go through the whole LCA process.

What does LCA estimate?

• Typically, environmental impacts for the life cycle

– Energy consumption, contribution to climate change, acidification, toxic impacts, water use….

• If only climate change, you get a carbon footprint

• If only water, you get a water footprint

• But also impacts in other categories of sustainability– Business impacts such as change in profit, materials management

needs, business disruption (e.g., trade impacts), training & personnel protection, brand equity, R&D expenditures…

– Socio-economic impacts such as job creation/ economic development, child labor, health and safety, regional through international resources, …

There are 3 types of LCAs

1. Process-Based Attributional LCA– Attributional methodology for life cycle inventory analysis (LCI)

aims at describing environmentally relevant physical flows to and from a life cycle and its subsystems.

– Ideally, it should include average data on each unit process within the life cycle.

– The attributional LCI model does not include unit processes other than those of the life cycle investigated.• Impacts are allocated to co-products by mass, energy, or economic value

– Most pre-2010 process-based LCAs are attributional.

There are 3 types of LCAs

2. Process-Based Consequential LCA– In contrast, consequential LCI methodology aims at describing

how things will change in response to possible changes made within the life cycle.

– A consequential LCI model includes unit processes that are significantly affected irrespective of whether they are within or outside the life cycle. • The system is expanded to GIVE CREDIT for co-production

– Ideally, it should include marginal data on bulk production processes in the background system.

• Your project will be an LCA that recommends improvement opportunities for a life cycle of a system of your choosing. HOWEVER:– You MUST NOT recreate an existing LCA (this means you must start

with a literature review and work from there!).

– You MUST NOT use an on-line LCA tool or LCA software to prepare your inventory analysis, impact assessment, and/or interpretation. • You MUST follow and correctly execute the computational structure presented in

the textbook and the data collection protocols described in class.

– Although you are to include existing EIO LCAs in your literature review, you MUST NOT use EIO LCA background data in your project.

• During the quarter, you will submit a proposal, interim reports, and a final report.

(1) The functional unit:– A measure of technology performance intended to provide a

reference to which the inventory data are related and to ensure alternative LCAs are compared on a common basis.

• It should include a magnitude of service, a duration of service, and a level of quality

– Safely support a 1 kg load in the structure of an aircraft over 30 years

– Consistently generate 1 kWh over 30 years

– Contain 50L of fuel over 17 years without leaking.

– Cradle-to-cradle, well-to-wheel, farm-to-table

– Presented as a list or diagram of industrial processes and materials and energy flows for the life cycle

– Starts with the specification of reference flows (construction and materials and energy use in the foreground) • An LCA of a diesel bus (needs a bus, diesel fuel, and infrastructure (gas stations and roads),

etc.)

• An LCA of an electric car (needs a car, electricity, and infrastructure (charging stations and roads), etc.)

Impact Characterization

• Characterization is the quantification of the contribution of each inventory flow to each impact of interest using:– Fate and transport models– Exposure assessment– Dose-response analysis, etc.

• Most often, characterization models are summarized as characterization factors for use in LCA and other research.

Preparing for your literature review

• Consider summarizing your LCA review in a table– Then in your goal and scope document you can easily write a

summary based on the columns. e.g., • Of the 6 existing LCAs, 5 represent production and operation in the US and 1

represents Switzerland. All 6 use the same functional unit (kWh generated) and use foreground data from RETScreen and life cycle background data from GREET. Further, all existing LCAs find that this new technology contributes far less to climate change than the current option iff it is operated on natural gas recovered from cow manure.
