How is your summer so far? I think we have it made here in Florida compared

to the rest of the country. I have heard reports from 100 degrees to the 120’s (what?). I thought I heard on the Weather Channel, 135, but that might have been the heat index. And these same places get bitterly, freezing cold in the winter as well. I’m sorry, but I will take a bit of humidity and mid 80’s to 90’s over that grueling weather any day. Just another wonderful reason to be in this beautiful com-munity!

Back to school for many resi-dents coming up at the end of the

month. Mixed feelings begin to stir. The disappointment of lazy days ending, the excitement of see-ing old friends and meeting new ones and the nervousness of will “I” be ready for school. I’m sure the stores already have their supplies lined up; this is like Christmas for them. And the parents of just starting out Kindergarteners have their tissues in hand. Whatever your position is, just enjoy the rest of the time you have before it all starts and send pictures to us of the first day of school for the Septem-ber issue!

Wesley Chapel sisters Chrissy Marra-McAnespie and Justine Marra have been

dancing for over 20 years. They love it all: ballet, tap, modern, hip-hop, jazz, and more. Six years ago, inspired by the words of a beloved mentor, they decided to blend a passion for dance with a delight in young children, and began offering a variety of dance lessons to ages 3 and up. Since January, they have offered classes at Meadow Pointe on Monday evenings. The sisters tailor their classes to the dancers; for the youngest ones, they shorten the lessons and use “magic wands” and stuffed animals to teach basic positions. Older children can tolerate a longer class, and might like dressing up in tutus and putting on their ballet shoes and fancy costumes; and more mature children also appreciate the social aspect of dance class.

The ladies are happy with their decision. “Person-ally my favorite part of being a dance teacher is getting to be a kid again. In order to make the classes fun for the little ones you have to relate to them and make it seem like they are playing. No matter what happens in your day you are forced to be happy for the kids which take you away to a wonderful land of imagination where bills and other adult woes don’t exist,” says Chrissy.

And, it seems, molding wee ones is full of surprises. The sisters recall a particularly fond

memory of a few years ago. It was a holiday show at the mall when it first opened. “I had a 4 year old tap class that gave me the hardest time during class. They didn’t understand why we had to practice the same dance over and over. It was my first show that I was putting on by myself, and I started to worry as the show got closer and closer and the students had less and less interest. Finally show day came and they literally stole the show!

They knew all the steps, were on beat, and were all smiling! It was more than I ever hoped for!”

Dancing can be a fun way to introduce children to body awareness, movement, discipline, posture, and grace. But another benefit of regular dance instruction is self-confidence. As a teacher, it’s so rewarding to watch the timid dancers become bold, tentative steps become masterful.

To The Pointe Dance classes are on Mondays between 4:30 and 7 pm at the Meadow Pointe Clubhouse. Boys and girls ages 3-10 are welcome. For more information, contact Chrissy at 679-0395 or email [email protected].

Tell a little bit about your backgroundI moved to Florida and Meadow Pointe in De-cember 1998. Shortly after my arrival, I joined the Meadow Pointe Community Council (MPCC) and served on that volunteer commit-tee until my election to the Board of Supervi-sors in January 2003. What was your “day job?”I served in the US Army for 28 years and upon retirement from active duty worked for the Army in a civilian capacity for six more years. My primary duties were in the personnel and administrative field. I had many policy making, budgeting, and supervisory positions over the course of those 34 years. Upon my move to Meadow Pointe, I retired from the work force.

What made you want to be a MP1 CDD supervisor?Having been fortunate to be able to retire at a relatively young age, I searched for a way to keep active. What I found was many opportu-nities to serve my community. I have been in several volunteer organizations including Scenic

Pasco, the Pasco Council of Neighborhood Associations, and the Pasco County Planning Commission. It was my time on the MPCC that led me to run for the CDD Board of Supervisors. Being on the Board would make it possible for me to have a direct influence on the community.

What are your top priorities for improv-ing our community?Meadow Pointe is a great community. However, as time goes by, we need to make sure that our facilities remain top notch and that they com-pare favorably with facilities in the surrounding area. This means that it is necessary to replace aging facilities and, in some cases, upgrade and expand them. My top priority is to accomplish this and maintain our assessments at the lowest level possible. Our board has been doing this by ensuring that we get the best value for the money we spend.

How do you see Meadow Pointe 1 in the future?A few years ago, the board started the process of renewing and upgrading our facilities. We remodeled the clubhouse. We converted the little used open air racquetball courts to a much better facility that included one indoor court, a large fitness room, a second meeting room and the CDD office. This year we replaced the wad-ing pool with a splash pad. Next year we will replace the aging playground. If we continue to do these things, Meadow Pointe will stay the top notch community that the developers hand-ed over to us. We need to continue to provide as many opportunities for recreation, community events, parties, etc. as possible. We need to ensure that the common areas are maintained to present the community in the best light. Then Meadow Pointe will continue to be recognized as a great place to live and enjoy our friends and neighbors. v

CoMMunity sPotlight

The Tampa Titan 12 and under baseball team (with ties to

Meadow Pointe), participated at Cooperstown Dreams Park from June 24th to June 30th. Considered the crown jewel of youth baseball and located at the birthplace of baseball, the Titans were just 1 of 104 teams competing in the week #4 tournament. Lara and Frank Barone parents of Greg Barone (Pinedale), Tiffany and Scott Ragsdale parents of Carson

Ragsdale (Manor Isle), and Michele Judge aunt of Cameron Rowe (Deer Run) were three of the players from Meadow Pointe that made the trip to New York for a once in a lifetime experience. Each team stayed in their own army style bar-racks located on the Dreams Park premises. Pin trading and opening ceremonies were the priority for the first two days of the week long tournament.

The baseball began on Sunday with each team playing two games per day for a total of six games to determine the seeding for the single elimination tournament. The Titans completed the seeding games with an amazing 6-0 record defeating teams from Connecticut, Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan, North Caro-lina, and Canada by a combined score of 63-3! This extraordinary feat earned the Titans the #1 seeding heading into Wednesday’s tourna-ment. In between all of the baseball the team and the parents had plenty of time enjoying the local commu-nity, which included the must see Baseball Hall of Fame.

On Wednesday with their #1 seeding the Titans entered the tournament in the fifth round against the Southeastern Bobcats from North Carolina. In an extra inning thriller with the Bobcat pitching ace throwing every pitch of the eight-inning game,

the Titans fell 2-1. Competing as hard as they could to the end, the Titans kept their heads held high representing the Tampa area by setting a tournament record by allowing only five runs over seven games for an astounding 0.71 runs allowed per game average. On the final day of the tournament during the closing ceremonies, each player was introduced and inducted into the Youth Baseball Hall of Fame, with each player receiving a ring as a symbol and a reminder of the ex-perience they had. This trip and the memories created will be one that the players, coaches, and parents will remember forever. v

If you live in one our gated communities, I’m sure it looks familiar.

The funny thing about signs we see every day is we tend to become complacent about the message printed on it. Now that summer is here and the children are out of school, I thought I would take this opportunity to stress the importance of the message on these signs. In 2010, three children were killed in automat-ed gate accidents. Every case involves children playing in the gates when they were suddenly activated. It is a very sad thing to hear!

Many drivers like the gate to be open when they get to it, so they press their remote as they turn off the main road. The problem with that is if anyone, child or adult is in the path of that gate, they will most likely get hit by the gate. As someone who works on them daily, I can tell you that it happens a lot and can be startling it is so sudden. One moment everything is normal and then suddenly, you are scrambling to get out of the way!

For the safety of our residents, young and mature, please heed the warning of no pedestrians near the vehicle gates. Just as important, please do not open the gate until you are certain little Johnny or Suzy are not playing hide and go seek in the area.

All of the safety precautions we take to make the gates as safe as possible are meaningless if the user disregards the warnings. Have a safe and happy summer!

The Florida Hospital, right here in our back yard, has announced the appointment

of Constance (Connie) F. Bladon as Executive Director, Foundation. You may of met her before because she is involved in so many of our commu-nity organizations and charities. did you know that ALL of the runoff from your home, yard, and streets drain into the “lakes” and

wetlands throughout the community? These lakes are engineered stormwater management systems which are designed to treat and store (to prevent downstream flooding) this runoff. So, whatever you spread on your yard for treatment drains into these ponds.

Historically these ponds have contained poor water quality due to non compli-ance with the design standards and the over treatment of lawns. With new state and federal regulations being studied which will ultimately dictate water quality standards for the community, education programs and pond improvements are being implemented to attempt compliance with them.

It is important that residents understand that the ponds are not typically natural lakes or ponds, and the community will become responsible for the quality of the

water flowing from the ponds into the natural wetlands and other downstream water bodies. Residents should know that the major pollutants that come from lawns can be reduced and possibly replaced with more “green” forms of treatment. New “green” treatment options are evolving, so watch out for such products when you’re purchasing your lawn care products or discussing your options with your lawn care professional.

The installation of aquatic plants in the pond flat areas around the outfall structures and around the pond perimeter will absorb some of the pollutants, as well as, help sta-bilize the pond slopes. These plantings will also attract/promote wildlife such as birds and fish. Starting this summer, the MPIII CDD is embarking on a multi-year pro-gram to install specially selected plants in our ponds that will filter runoff, improving the overall water quality as well as making our ponds more attractive. So, enjoy your community ponds and remember that you can also help make a difference. l

Homeowners are invited to vote on August 2, 2011, for proposed amendments to

the association’s bylaws and deed restrictions. Homeowners have already received meeting notices and proxy voting materials in the mail. The primary proposal reduces the number of homeowners who must participate, either in person or by proxy, in order to hold the annual membership/election meeting each year. If the amendment is not adopted prior to this year’s annual meeting, the meeting cannot be convened, which in turn will mean that the members once again will not have the chance to elect the association’s directors (the current directors will continue in office). It will take 1,059 “yes” votes to change the meeting requirements. The voting period can be extended beyond the August 2 deadline, but only if there is a strong show of support for the amendment before then.

Members also are being invited to reduce the number of votes required to adopt amendments to the association’s bylaws and deed restrictions. The deed restrictions, in particular, include a number of provisions that are outdated or in need of clarification, but it takes 1,411 “yes” votes to amend the covenants. Homeowners who think revisions are needed should contact your neighbors to support amending the deed restrictions. Without your support (votes) it also means that the Board of Directors will not be able to implement significant bylaw changes requested by residents.

5. Power lines. Do not go near power lines especially if they are

broken or down.

6. Clothing. Wear clothing that protects you as much as

possible. Even though it is not cold during hurricane season, wear long sleeves and long pants. Wear sturdy shoes that will be suitable for walking, which you may, or may not, have to

do. Take along a hat that can be used to shelter you from the sun.

7. Disaster Kit. Take your disaster kit with the supplies

you will need. The kit will include items such as a battery-powered radio, extra batteries, food, water, and clothing. Make plans to have enough supplies for at least three days; more if possible.

8. Phone. Bring your cellular phone.

9. Prepare your Home Be-fore leaving

• Lock all doors and windows

• Turn off the electric and water. You should know how to use the tools needed to do this, typically an adjustable pipe wrench and a crescent wrench.

• If you have food in a home freezer, your local officials will advise you as to whether or not to turn off electric-ity. You may lose power in which case the food will not keep for very long.

• Leave your natural gas on unless you are instructed to turn it off. You may need gas for heating or cooking and only a professional can turn it on once it has been turned off. In times of emergency, it may take days or weeks to get a professional to your home to turn on your gas once it has been turned off.

10. CommunicationsIf you have time, call your

family and friends. In any event, leave a note as to the route you are taking and your destination. Put your emergency communications plan into effect as follows.

• Choose an out of town contact your family or household members will call or email to check on each other should a disaster occur. Your selected contact should live far enough away that they would be unlikely to be directly affected by the same event and they should know they are the chosen contact.

• Make sure household members have each other’s contact informa-tion including e-mail addresses and telephone numbers (home, work, pager, and cell). Leave these contact numbers at your workplace, and if you have children, at your children’s school.• Your family should know that if telephones are not working, they need to be patient and try again later or try e-mail. Many people flood the telephone lines when emergencies happen but e-mail can sometimes get through when calls cannot.

Case in point: Wesley Cha-pel High School junior Shelby Thompson. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Wesley Chapel Sunrise Shelby left for a week-long adventure at S4TL (Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders), joining 200 other students from 130 high-schools across the state at Florida Southern College in Lake-land from June 19-25.

S4TL is a high-powered leader-ship training program for high school juniors organized annually by several Rotary Districts in

mid- and southwest Florida. This award-winning program is capable of transforming the lives of these young leaders. Daily activities include exciting lectures, discussions, rap sessions, and demonstrations of those prin-ciples which enable an individual to lead others.

Students attending S4TL are chal-lenged to utilize all available skill, knowledge, talent, expertise, and intelligence toward specific goals. The ultimate objective of S4TL is for each student to leave the seminar with a new awareness of him or herself, and be more finely tuned to utilize their abilities to

serve others in leadership capaci-ties throughout life.

Shelby, 16, was selected for the program over a dozen other local students based on her track record of volunteerism and service with organizations such as Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and other local charitable causes. v

My name is Jennifer Mammen and I will be a senior this upcoming 2011-2012 school year. I’m very much

looking forward to being a senior for vari-ous reasons. Yes, I’m only one year away from graduating, but with being a senior comes many more opportunities in life.

Though I live in Meadow Pointe, I attend Land O’ Lakes High School, as I have for the past three years, as a student in the IB Program. Only 50 students remain in this program from the 100 that entered our freshman year and I am very proud to have made it this far.

I am very involved at Land O’ Lakes High School. I am a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. I am also a member of the IB Relay for Life Team, Interact Club, and Key Club. I have also previously participated in our school chorus group as well as Future Business Leaders of America.

After having been a member of my school’s color guard team for the past three years, I have been named captain for this upcoming school year. Look out for our marching band show, “The Travelers,” this year as I will be one of the title characters! I am very interested in the fine arts and enjoy singing and photography as well. I have lately been interested in modeling and would like to try and pursue this in the near future.

On top of being involved in my school, I also enjoy helping out in my community as well. I have been volunteering in various departments at Tampa General Hospital for over a year now, and will continue to do so into my senior year. I will also be volunteering at the Museum of Sci-ence and Industry and at The Florida Aquar-ium. I have also recently been hired for a part time job at our local Sweetbay Supermarket.

The IB Program is a very rigorous college preparation program and it has definitely been beneficial for me. It has encouraged me to take more challenging courses, participate in extra-curricular activities, and help out in my community as well. Due to my many amazing experiences in the IB program, I hope to attend the University of Florida in the fall of 2012.

I am so thrilled to be honored with the Senior to Watch in 2011/2012 Award from YOUR Community Newsletters. give you some facts about auto thefts in Pasco County. Please read and make sure to take precautions to ensure your vehicle is secure. Also, pay attention when you arrive home

or leave for work. Be sure to notify authorities of suspicious behavior. For more information please check out www.pascosheriff.com.

BASIC FACTS ABOUTAUTO THEFT

In 2009, 1,225 motor vehicles were stolen in Pasco County (all law enforcement agency jurisdictions). One in five stolen vehicles is left unlocked with the keys in the ignition. When leaving your car, close the windows, lock the doors and take your keys with you. Over half of all vehicle thefts occur in residential neigh-borhoods. If you have a garage, use it! Lock the vehicle and the garage door. If you don’t have a garage, lock the car and turn the wheels to the left or right. This makes a thief ’s job harder. More than two-thirds of total thefts occur after dark. Park in well-lighted areas.

In 2009, 1,246 thefts occurred from motor vehicles in Pasco County Sheriff ’s Office’s

jurisdiction. One of every five larcenies involves the theft of motor vehicle accessories. In the majority of motor vehicle thefts, the victim left valuables in plain view within the vehicle. Always remove portable electronics such as GP devices, MP3 players, and similar items before leaving the vehicle. Secure all packages in a trunk or under a seat and out of view. Consider investing in an alarm system rather than expensive options. Professional car thieves can strip your vehicle completely within minutes. Engrave your driver license number in a remote location on the radio and accessories, as well as the fenders and doors. If a theft occurs, your driver license number will make identification recovery and prosecution more likely.

The longer it takes to steal a car, the more likely a thief will look elsewhere. Automobile manufacturers regularly improve the anti-theft equipment they install in vehicles. You may want to consider an anti-theft bar that at-taches to your steering wheel, an alarm system or other equipment that will slow down a thief and better protect your vehicle.

The art of storytelling is a big factor in getting your child interested in books. Children

can develop a passion for reading for all sorts of reasons.

I fondly remember the nights my mother sat next to me in bed reading stories, I especially remember “Hansel and Gretel”. I would lean over her shoulder to look at the illustrations while she narrated in her animated voice. My three brothers and I enjoyed this bedtime ritual, and it showed.

When I learned to read for myself, you would often find me with a book in hand, reading every moment I could. Looking back, I remember trips to the local library with my mother during the summer and realize her participation in my life inspired my love for reading.

Today, I read to my children and enjoy the trips to the library or to a book store. Keeping this tradition is important for the nurturing of my children’s desire to read. There are many benefits that can be discovered by reading to your children from a very young age.

Perhaps the most encouraging are the results from studies which indicate children who are read to from an early age tend to have better language development skills. These improved skills will continuously benefit the child, even improving test scores later in life. There is also an emotional bond that forms when parents read aloud to their children. Both parents and children can benefit with this quality time interaction.

Inspiring a love of reading in your child is simple when utilize the proper set of keys. Here are 6 key ideas for stirring the love of reading in your child’s heart

• Read out loud together: No matter what their age, most children will happily sit by their parent’s side and listen to a story. It could be a novel that you have chosen together or a few items from the daily newspaper (sports included), take some time everyday if you can to read out loud. It is a soothing way to settle your child down at night. Use different voices. Discuss the story, encourage imagination and talk about decisions made by the characters. By doing this, you are preparing them for more independent reading skills.

• Keep interesting books lying around your child’s room and family areas. If books are around them, then it is more likely that they will pick them up and read a while.

• Take trips to the library or book shops. Let your child spend time exploring, dabbling and soaking in the variety available. The let them select a title or two to bring home.

• Take books everywhere you go. No matter where you go: the dentist, doctor’s office, car repair shop or grocery store, your child will enjoy the diversion that a book can offer. • Designate a reading time. Whether they admit it or not, most children will learn to love a little down time, away from television, computers video games; if they are offered the quite adventure of reading

• Finally, remember to encourage but never force a child to read. Do not ruin the experience by making it a chore. If there is a range of interesting stories (or even an obsession with just one topic), keep that available and eventually enthusiasm will follow.

Taking an active role in reading to your children will inspire them to read themselves. The more you commit to this family activity, the better their chances. v

GFWC New Tampa Junior Woman’s Club (NTJWC) is a 501 (c) 3, non-profit organization dedicated to com-

munity improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service.

Our club year runs from August-May, and we meet the 2nd Monday of the month at the New Tampa YMCA lo-cated at 16221 Compton Dr, Tampa, FL 33647. It is a great opportunity to meet some new friends while giving your time to worthy causes. You can volunteer 25 hours or 1000 hours…the choice is yours on how involved you would like to be.

NTJWC is one of the larg-est FFWC clubs in the State of Florida, and has won numerous prestigious state awards over the

years. During the 2008-2009 club year we donated over $27,000 and 10,000 volunteer hours in over 50 projects.

Over the years we have had several members serve on the State Board. We currently have 5 members in state positions.

Each spring we host The Night of 5000 Charity Ball which raises mon-ey for a selected charity and funds the

club projects for the following year. This past year’s featured charity was Camp Hopetake.
