Transition Day

2017-2018 School Year

The Transition Day for the 2017-2018 School

Year will take place Friday, August 25, 2017 as

follows: Please report to the front lobby.

8th Grade - A-K 8:00 am L-Z 8:45 am

7th Grade - A-K 10:00 am L-Z 11:00 am

6th Grade - A-K 12:30 pm L-Z 1:30 pm

Because the time is limited, we ask that you

follow the following schedule:

Students will turn in completed paperwork,

receive their schedules, locker assignments

and have their pictures taken. Students will

also have the opportunity to walk their

schedules, set up their lockers, and practice

a few “dry runs” of their schedule at their

own leisure. Students new to our school will

need time to practice their schedule. Par-

ents are welcome to accompany their son/

daughter.

The first official day of school is September 5th. The first bell

rings at 8:07 a.m. and is a FULL day of school (dismissal at 3:02

pm). You are to report directly to your first period class as de-

fined on your schedule which you will receive on August 25. We

would like to welcome back all students and extend a hearty wel-

come to all of our new Patriots. We’re going to have a great year.

Parent and guardians can update contact information for

themselves and their students directly by logging in to the

MISTAR ParentPortal. This ability for parents to more

easily update contact information will help ensure timely

and relevant communication to and from home and school

for students, parents and staff.

This new feature allows parents and guardians to:

* Update parent pone numbers and e-mail addresses in

the MISTAR database

* Change their student’s primary phone number, used by the

district’s parent notification system, Edulink, to alert parents of

snow days, attendance issues, building updates and other im-

portant messages. (Note: Parents can also opt NOT to receive

other important school and district-wide news and infor-

mation.)

REPLACEMENT FEES

All students will receive a Student Planner on the first or second day of school. To replace a lost planner is $5.00 and can be purchased in the office. Students use their planner to help keep track of assignments, tests, projects, etc. All Students will receive a student ID. To replace a student ID is $3.00 and can be purchased in the office.

My student will be absent. What do I need to do?

When a student will be absent, the parent/guardian must call the attendance line at

248-344-3999 ext. 2 to excuse their absence. This includes absences due to illness,

trips or personal reasons. Notes to teachers do not reach the office. PLEASE AL-

WAYS CALL YOUR STUDENT’S ABSENCE IN ON THE ATTENDANCE LINE.

If your student will be absent for a pre-planned period of time, they should bring a

note to the office, which we will stamp and then the student will have each teacher

sign.

My student will be tardy. What do I need to do?

If your student has an appointment, you need to call the attendance line at

248-344-3999 ext. 2 to excuse their tardy. This includes tardies due to weather,

traffic or appointments. Notes to teachers do not reach the office. PLEASE ALWAYS

CALL YOUR STUDENT’S TARDY IN ON THE ATTENDANCE LINE, otherwise we will need

to mark the tardy as an unexcused tardy/absence.

My student needs to leave early. What do I need to do?

Before the school day begins, please have your student present a note to the office

including the time of departure. The office will stamp the note and tell the student to

present it to the teacher in the hour of departure. The parent comes to the office to

sign the student out and the student meets the parent in the office. This way we do

not have to disturb the learning process to call into classrooms. It’s efficient. The

parent controls the time of release.

ALL STUDENTS MUST BE SIGNED OUT BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN OR SOMEONE

LISTED ON EMERGENCY CARD. WE WILL NOT RELEASE STUDENTS TO ANYONE NOT

LISTED ON CARD UNLESS WE HAVE IT IN WRITING WITH PARENT SIGNATURE.

How do I contact a teacher? We encourage meetings with individual teachers throughout the year. We do ask that meetings are scheduled with the individual teacher(s) as planned meetings lead to better communication and focus on solutions. Parents may wish to call and leave a voice message for individual teachers. Please feel free to access voice mail and e-mail as well. We appreciate your coop-eration. How do I get a forgotten lunch or homework to my student? Students are paged for items left or brought in during class passing time. If a student is expecting an item from home, they should check the office during class passing times to see if it has arrived. How do I get my MISTAR ParentPortal Help Desk information? MISTAR ParentPortal is a web application that provides parents with direct access to student data via the Internet. Using a confidential PIN (personal identification number) and password, parents can connect to the school district’s student database using a web browser and view their child’s data, such as progress reports, attendance records, report cards, transcripts, and more.

Cross Country Attention 6th, 7th and 8th grade Cross Country Runners Stay physically active throughout the summer. By August 1st, if not before, start running regularly (3 or 4x per week). Try running about 2 miles or 15 minutes of continuous running, then build-up to 3 miles or 20+ minutes of continuous run-ning. Pace yourself and if needed start by doing walk/run intervals. TBA Any 7th or 8th grade student interest-ed in playing football must listen to morning announcements. All students planning on participating in football should make sure to have the MSHAA Medical History form filled out prior to the start of the season.

Athletic Fee

All students participating in athletics in grades 7-8 will pay a one-time yearly fee of $200.00

or $205.00 if you choose to pay online. 6th graders may participate in Cross Country,

Swim & Dive, Track & Field and Cheer at Home Meets Only. 6th graders will pay a

one-time fee of $100.00 or $103.00 if you choose to pay online. This fee will only be paid

once regardless of how many athletic teams your son/daughter decides to participate on.

How can I get homework for my sick child?

Student’s are expected to make up missing assignments for

everyday that they are absent. Students are given the same

number of days to complete their assignments as their days

missed. The student is missing school because of illness

and will benefit from rest.

In the case of a student’s absence exceeding two (2) days, it

is the responsibility of his/her parent to request assign-

ments by calling the school office. Parents should allow 24

hours notice for Daily Class teaching. There is 48-hour ad-

vance notice for teachers on A/B schedule requirements to

allow teachers to get the assignments ready. It is recom-

mended that students call a friend for assignments when

absent one or two days.

No additional homework will be assigned until the first

homework request requirements are completed and re-

turned to the teacher.

You may also check with Google Classroom, Moodle or Parent

Connect if the teacher uses any of these systems.

Guidelines for School Business Absence

A. Students are responsible for assignments.

B. Arrangements should be made in advance with the

teachers.

Electronic, Cellphone Use

Students should be aware that all electronics, including cellphones are

expected to be turned off and in lockers during the school day unless a

teacher has a BYOD day. Students should also be adhering to the Ac-

ceptable Use of Technology while they are traveling to and from

school on the school bus.

DISCIPLINE/CODE OF CONDUCT/Mission Statement

Extra/Co-Curricular Student Code of Conduct/ Mission Statement

All students need to return the enclosed Extra/Co-Curricular ‘Student Code of Conduct’

form and Mission Statement. Please take the time to read over the packet with your

parent/guardian—both parent/guardian and students should sign the Acknowledge-

ment Form and return on August 26th. Please go online to find the Code of Conduct

Discipline Procedure

Meads Mill offers a progressive discipline procedure. However, sometimes it

is necessary to remove students from school (suspension). Please

remember that it is extremely important to understand that middle school stu-

dents do make mistakes. It is our job to teach them that what they did was

wrong, why it was wrong and implement a consequence for their mistake. This

is part of preparation for life. We cannot emphasize enough how important it is

for parents to support us when this unfortunate situation arises. We MUST work

together for the long-term benefit of your child. We have worked with middle

school students for many years now. We always remind parents that we have

them for 3 years. We will survive with your child. You, however, have them your

entire life. Please work with us to demonstrate to them that they cannot drive a

wedge between the school and your home. The assistant principal is the admin-

istrator in charge of discipline. All decisions that the assistant principal makes

can be appealed to the principal. However, parents should know that we have

always backed assistant principals in decisions they make in the best interest of

kids.

Sports Information Athletic Physicals

All athletes, including cheerleaders and students participating in intra murals must have an athletic physical each school year. It is highly recommended that all students get their physical during the summer because they may not tryout, practice, play or compete without one. Please don’t wait until you hear about tryouts for your sport because you may not have time to see your doctor. MSHAA Medical History form is( white) and can be obtained in the office or online and stu-

dents may seek an appointment with their family physician. This form is different from the green health appraisal form so please make sure the doctor has the right form.

Fall Sports This year’s Fall sports for 7/8th graders include Football, and Girls Volleyball. 6-8th grade -Girls Cheer. and Cross Country. Individual meetings for the Cross Country, Volleyball, Cheerleading, and Football teams will take place at school. Watch/listen for announce-ments. Procedures regarding the Northville Public Schools Extra/Co-Curricular Student Athletic/Activity Code of Conduct, physicals, academic eligibility, practice schedules, etc., will be discussed. These meetings should last about 20 minutes. All students planning on participating in sports at Meads Mill should make sure to have the MSHAA Medical History form (located in packet) filled out prior to the start of the season. This also includes all students who will be participating in Intra Mural Sports. It is recommended that all fall sport athletes condition over the summer to avoid injuries when the fall sports season start..

Cheerleading

All 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are invited to join the Meads Mill Cheer

Team. Currently no try-outs are required for cheerleading and no prior

experience is needed. The team will perform at both the Meads Mill foot-

ball & boy’s basketball home games. The season runs from September

through January. Join us and learn cheerleading skills, enjoy team build-

ing events, and getting to know new friends!

Look for more information at the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year.

The NPS athletic fee and MHSAA sports physical/medical history form

should be filled out and turned in to the office prior to the start of the sea-

son.

Medical Issues, Immunizations and Medications

Individual Emergency Health Care Plans Students who have Medical Issues that require an Individual Health Care Plan should expect to receive the plan before the start of school. These IEHCP’s will be mailed home once we receive them from the District Nurse.

Important Immunization Information

As of January 2015 – All students that are new to the district and all 7

th grade students at Meads Mill must have an updated immunization

record OR an immunization waiver from the county Health Depart-ment BEFORE the start of school. Your child will not be able to start school if one of these documents is not on file in the school office. The schools are no longer permitted to distribute waiver forms and can only accept those from the county Health Department. Contact your child’s medical provider immediately to arrange for any needed immunizations or your local Health Department to schedule an appointment for the educa-tional session required to obtain the waiver. In Wayne County call 734-727-7125 to schedule an appointment. Call ear-ly to make certain you can get an appointment before school starts.

Medications All medications that must be administered during school hours must have the appro-priate form ('Permission to Medicate') on file and be in the original container. This includes over the counter medications. These forms are available in the office and included in this packet. A physician’s note is required for all medications to be administered in the Northville Public Schools. All medications are kept in the main office. Students should not carry medications with the exception of inhalers and epi-pens. In cases of Emergency Treatments that result in students needing to take medi-cations at school, have the Physician fill out a note. Parent/guardians will fill out their part on the “Permission to Medicate” form and we will attach both to-gether. ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL CONTAINER WITH THE STU-DENT’S NAME ON BOTTLE.

MEADS MILL Safety Issues We have implemented many safety action plans and they will be emphasized to the students when we meet with them. The size of our facility alone contrib-utes to our concern. Therefore, the following is in place again this year. 1. We will lock all entry doors at 8:30 a.m. 2. All visitors must sign in at the office and secure a visitor pass. This includes

parent volunteers, contractors, guest teachers, etc. 3. Students who are bicycling to Meads Mill should lock their bikes in the bike

racks. All students should use sidewalks whenever available to access the building.

4. Because we have communicated to all parents that they should follow one of the two options for dropping off/picking up students at the end of the day, we should have safe access to our walkers at the front of the building and in parking lot.

5. Please emphasize to your son/daughter to use extreme caution while walk-ing along Bradner.

6. The doors located in the E-Wing are locked from outside in. Students may exit the building through the door by E-6 at the end of the day. This is not an entrance.

7. Areas closed off during games, concerts, and other events are unsuper-vised. Students and others should not enter these areas without administra-tive permission.

8. Doors are located in the E-Wing around the area where community will access the auxiliary gym. Those doors are locked from the outside-in. However, our students will be able to use those doors to exit the building in case of fire. This, however, provides a safety risk because a student could let someone in who is unauthorized. We will emphasize this as a safety concern when we meet with the students and we ask that you do the same. Students who open the security doors will receive appropriate disciplinary action.

Finally, we ask your cooperation as we begin a new year at Meads Mill. We are sure we will learn as we continue to live in this building. Changes and modifications will be made to assure the safety of everyone. We ask you to communicate directly with us as necessary.

Parking Lot Flow

In order to insure safe arrival and departure of our students

we are asking that all parents cooperate with the drop off

and pick up procedure identified below. Parents will have

two options for drop off and/or pick up.

Morning arrival/Drop off: Parent drivers may enter the lot. For their safety, stu-

dents are to use the curb side door to exit your vehicle. Students should have all

their materials ready to exit the vehicle as soon as possible. Parent drivers should

not drive up to or past the front door. This area is reserved for special transports

by bus or car for injured or disabled students. In the morning only, parents may

use the bus drive to Bradner to exit the parking lot. Please recall that buses have

the right of way all of the time on school grounds. Please refrain from speeding,

using cell phones, or cutting off other vehicles.

No parent should drop a student off by the band room entrance.

Bradner is an alternative drop off point for students. Parents who make u-turns

into the bus exit or neighbors’ drives create an unsafe situation for students and

adults. Everyone is in a hurry. If everyone cooperates, we will have a safe and

efficient environment.

Afternoon Dismissal/pick up: NO CARS should enter the lower circle lot, not even

at the stop sign, when there are buses present. If your child is injured or disabled,

you can arrange to enter the lot by contacting Mr. O’Neill directly. Special pick ups

for animals or other reasons should arrive after 3:10. Cars entering the lot after

the buses leave are to retrieve students at the curb. Parking places are for people

entering the building, not student pick up. The bus drive is open ONLY to buses in

the afternoon, even in the winter. Please do not use that drive. Student walkers

are on Bradner.

Lunch Program

Lunch Prices

As of this writing, lunch prices for 2017-2018 have not been determined. Students will not be able to access their lunch account without using their ID card—send them with cash or a lunch until they receive their ID card. Remind them to keep their lunch card in a safe place. Should they lose their card the first month of school, they should listen to the morning announcements—this is where we will make the announcement when students can purchase a replacement ID card. Lunch

We ask that parents who take their children out for lunch make sure they return for the start of class so as not to disrupt the learning process. Student lunch periods are as follows:

Free & Reduced Lunches Letters of explanation and application forms are available in the office. Please stop in and get one if you qualify. All questions regarding the hot lunch program should be directed to the Food Services Depart-ment at 248- 344-3690.

How do I set up a lunch account for my student? Students are each assigned an ID card with their picture. Parents can open a lunch ac-

count for their student by having the student bring in a check made payable to Northville

Public Schools that they will give to the lunch room cashier/or deposit box in front office.

The cashiers will deposit the money into their account. Parents also have the ability to

electronically add a payment to their child’s cafeteria (food services) account. To utilize this

feature, log in to the ParentConnection system, click on the “Cafeteria” module and then

click on the “Online Food Services Payments” link in the upper right hand corner of the

screen. Once completed and processed, the payment will be immediately applied to the

child’s cafeteria account. These transactions are processed through PayPal which charges

a processing fee of $0.30 plus 2.9% of the transaction total. A PayPal account is not need-

ed to complete the transaction. Payments can be made with Visa, MasterCard, American

Express and Discover.

The student can then use their ID card as a debit lunch card. Students will not be able to

access their lunch account without their ID card. We recommend parents give their stu-

dents emergency lunch money to keep in their locker in the event that they forget/lose their

ID card. Lost ID cards can be purchased and usually are ready in 1-2 days. Those students

who have lost their ID card will need to pack a lunch from home until the new card is ready.

grams for those interested in renting an

instrument. Band instructors will also be

available to answer any individual ques-

tions and assist parents with the rental

process.

you and your child must sign before he/

she is allowed to access our

computer system. Students will not have

access to e-mail accounts for the 2017-

2018 school year.

School Supplies Students should plan on coming to class with pencils, pens (black/blue and red for cor-

recting papers), ruler, flash drive, highlighters, sticky notes for note taking, colored pen-

cils, folders, erasers, pencil case to hold supplies. They should plan on covering books,

but please be aware that the stretchy book covers sometimes will cause damage to text-

books—paper covers work great.

In addition we recommend the following for home use—filler paper for homework, diction-

ary, note cards. It’s a good idea to stock up on these supplies while on sale in summer.

Your student will use them.

Teachers will recommend additional school supplies in the opening

packet including the types of notebooks preferred.

Appropriate Clothing

It is important that clothing worn to school is appropriate for the classroom. Shorts should be

of appropriate size and length. Any student wearing clothing deemed inappropriate will be

asked to change clothing. We have clothes available for students to change into so parents

do not need to bring in other items unless they choose to. There are rules in the code of con-

duct (a student shall not dress or groom in a manner which, in the judgment of a building

administrator, is unsafe to the student or others or causes a disruption to the educational process) regarding bare midriffs, t-tops, beachwear, wording on T-shirts, etc. (All tank

tops must have a strap at least 2 inches wide and be form fitting around the

arm.) We would also like to remind parents that sagging pants and exposed under-

garments are not in compliance with the MMS dress code. Parents, please help

your child make wise choices and take time to notice what your child is wearing to

school. Some clothing that may be purchased at local stores may not be appropriate

for school. We ask your cooperation in this area.

NORTHVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT Northville, Michigan

PARENT, GUARDIAN, CARE GIVER ROLE

DURING SCHOOL EMERGENCIES

The Northville Public School District has developed a protocol explaining parent

responsibilities in emergency situations and reunification of parents and students after an

emergency situation at the school. Instinct draws parents, guardians and care givers to the school in

emergency situations, but proceeding to the school may place you in danger and your presence at the

school will complicate the management of the emergency response.

This is designed to serve as a guide for Parent/Guardian/Care Giver, outlining

responsibilities in the event of an emergency situation at your child’s school.

School Planning

Schools have developed and have practiced lockdown and shelter in place drills. Two such drills are

required by law each school year starting in 2007. In addition to 5 fire drills, two tornado drills,

and three lock down/shelter in place.

Definitions:

Lock Down: Where there is danger in or near the school and students and staff need to be

protected from that danger. An example of a lockdown could be: an intruder either inside

or outside of the school, most likely occurring during or after an overtly violent act.

Shelter in Place: A concerted effort to shelter students and staff inside while minimizing the

flow of air both from outside and between separate parts of the school. An example of

shelter in place would include tornados, accidents involving hazardous material spills or

incidents involving chemical release.

Evacuations: When conditions make it unsafe to remain within the school building.

Schools have identified safe evacuation routes depending on the type of threat and where the threat

may occur on or near the school site.

Class rosters will be used to account for children during emergency situations.

In the case of an emergency situation at the school or if an evacuation is necessary, Parent/Student

reunification sites have been identified and will be communicated via the District’s LISTSERV,

website and the local media.

Parent Responsibilities During an Emergency at the School

Register to be included on the District’s LISTSERV to receive information and updates during emergen-

cy situations.

Discuss the purpose of the Lock Down/Shelter in Place drills with your child.

Do not report to your child’s school during emergency situations. Law enforcement will not allow entry

to the school site during a lockdown or shelter in place.

Avoid calling the school or the District during the emergency.

Monitor emergency information updates using the District’s LISTSERV, website and local media.

After the all clear is given, parents/guardians/care givers may pick up students at the school or the

reunification site.

Parent/Guardian/Care Giver identification will be required before the child is released.

Homework Information

We often hear comments from parents that our students have too much, or not enough home-work. To help you better understand the amount of homework your child will be receiving, our staff organized the following guidelines based on National Averages. As a 6th grader, your child should have about 60 minutes of homework per night. As a 7th grader, your child should have about 75 minutes of homework per night. As a 8th grader, your child should have about 90 minutes of homework per night. These amounts of time are only guidelines. Some nights the amounts may exceed the times suggested and on other nights there may not be any homework. Each student at Meads Mill is given an assignment book. This book is invaluable. It helps you to keep track of your child’s assignments. All students should be recording all of their assign-ments and they should bring the assignment book home daily for you to see. If a problem arises, you can contact your child’s teachers and they will begin initialing the book each day, with you doing the same at night. Other things that you can do to help your child is to provide a quiet place for your child to do his/her homework, set aside a regular time each evening for homework, and provide necessary materials (paper, pencils, pens). Outside activities can affect your child’s homework time and reflect on his/her grades. We know and understand that many of our students engage in activities outside of school, such as soccer, hockey, and dance. You, as the parent, must make the decision as to how many of these activi-ties your child is able to handle and still be successful in school.

By working together we hope your child will have a successful year at Meads Mill.

Gym Locks

In order to increase security in the gym area, we are encouraging students to use locks. Students who do not supply locks may risk loss of personal property so please give this careful consideration and encourage your student to lock the locker and keep the combi-nation confidential. In addition, document the combination in another area in case the student forgets the combination. Please make sure that you can not still turn the dial when you pull down on the lock be-fore you purchase it. Some locks that still turn when pulled down on can be eventually opened without the combination.

Textbooks

Please check your homes for Meads Mill books, even if your student has turned in

their books. Some students have borrowed books from friends and now they’re miss-

ing. As a reminder, you might want to document the textbook numbers assigned to

your child. Remind them that they are responsible for the books

assigned to them and if lost, the student is responsible for pay-

ment to replace the textbook. Students are also responsible for

any damage that occurs to their textbooks.

Backpacks As a reminder, backpacks are not allowed to be

carried during the middle school day and please

be aware that the backpacks with wheels and

handles do not fit in our lockers.

Lockers As you make your back to school purchases, please

be aware students who decide to purchase additional shelving for

their lockers should not purchase shelves that expand when placed

in the locker. This type of shelf causes problems for locker neigh-

bors. Also be aware that rolling backpacks do not fit in the lock-

ers.

School lockers are assigned alphabetically by grade. The locker as-

signments and combinations will be given to all grade students at

Transition Day. Only built-in locks may be used on the school hall lockers. Students are required to keep their combination confidential; there is no locker combination change. Sharing or abuse of lockers may result in the loss of locker privileges.

Emergency Dismissal

In case of emergency dismissal of school, please make sure your student/students know where to report. We will publicize this closing in the local Media and on our LISTSERV. We have on occasion had to dismiss early, mostly due to power or plumbing issues. Please make a plan with your child regarding where they should go if this occurs. We may have communication problems (no phone) in the event of a power failure. It is expected that all families have a back up plan if school has to be closed after we are in session. PLEASE MAKE ARRANGEMENTS WITH NEIGHBORS AND/OR FRIENDS.

Crossing Guard

Those students who are walkers are expected to use sidewalks and are to cross the street where the crossing guard is posted. Students choosing to cross the street at other locations will find themselves serving after school detentions. This is being done in the

interest of safety. Please do not drop your child off for school in the bus drop off zone.

Neighborhood Courtesy

Please alert your student not to cut through neighbor’s yards on the way to and from school. This is a common courtesy and we will expect students to cooperate.

Bus Schedules

All Transportation Info will be communicated to parents by LISTSERV and will be available on the district web site. Bus schedules will be published in the Northville Record and posted on the front door windows at Meads Mill prior to the first day of school. Please remind your student to take note of the letter in their bus window so they know which bus to get on in the afternoon. Buses will drop off students on the circular drive and exit unto Brander. Morning drop off: Parents may enter the lot. Please have your student use the curb side to exit your vehicle. Please stay to the west of the front door to allow for buses and special transports. Your may exit out on Bradner. Please recall that school buses have the right of way. In the interest of safety for our students and adults, please refrain from using cell phones while driving in our parking lot. Parent drop off area ends before you reach the walk to the front door. No parent should drop a student off by the band room entrance.

Dismissal: No cars should enter the lower lot (circle). Parents and other drivers should stay in the upper lots. If your student’s injuries require front door pick up, please let Mr. O’Neill know. Special pick-ups will want to arrive about 3:10. The drive to Bradner is open only to buses in the afternoon. No driver should cut off other drivers who are waiting in line—you are interfering with the buses and endangering the students and adults who are walking in the lot. If you need more time in the morning, please get here earlier.

Starting time for our school day is still 8:12 a.m. and dismissal is 3:02 p.m. The school doors will open at 7:15 a.m. All students in the building prior to 7:45 am should report di-rectly to the front lobby in front of the of-fice . When students are left unattended there is always danger to their physical well-being. School hours will be strictly enforced during the 2017-2018 school year due
