Kaitlin Becker is currently Meals on Wheels Coordinator. Her mother, Terry Becker, was already a Berks Encore veteran—a center manager first at Hamburg, later at Strausstown, and today at Fleetwood. The two women’s involvement in the agency, however, dates back nearly 20 years ago. Terry began volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program in 1996, as she was looking for an opportunity to help her local Hamburg commu- nity. “I started when my two girls were little,” she recalls. Her youngest daughter, Emily, was still in a booster seat when she began delivering meals every other Thursday. Terry remembered the difficulty of delivering meals with a small child in tow: “You get the kid out, you get the meals out, you trudge out and ring the doorbell—then you do it in reverse.” Over the summer, older sister Kate would also join her mother and sister in delivering meals. “When I was little, I didn’t always want to go,” Kate remembered. Her mother reinforced the idea that volunteering and being involved in one’s local community was important. But she also gave Kate and young Emily another incentive: “I promised a slushie at Sheetz after a job well done. Kate recalls that this promise also included a hot dog,” says Terry. As she grew older, Kate explains, the mission of the Meals on Wheels program became clearer, and Kate and her sister found helping people to be rewarding and fun too. The two girls could run the meals themselves to various houses, and some Meals on Wheels clients even treated them to candy and conversation. In 2004 Terry became the manager of the Hamburg Center, coming on full time for Berks Encore. But the mission of Meals on Wheels remained a driving force in her career. “Meals on Wheels has always been job number one for me. It is a mission, I have believed that for years, and I continue to believe that,” Terry states. “It’s a family-oriented, rewarding program.” Kate echoes that sentiment, acknowledging that, “with Meals on Wheels, you can really help peo- ple.” After college, she returned to delivering meals to assist her mother. In 2011 she became a Medicare counselor with the agency. When the opportunity arose to manage the Meals on Wheels Program in early 2015, Kate jumped at the chance. Today she ensures the program runs smoothly and manages day-to-day operations; she still travels out to deliver meals, now in the city of Reading, each week. Kate and Terry aren’t the only members of the family to be involved with Meals on Wheels and Berks Encore. Terry’s parents became Meals on Wheels volunteers in Hamburg at Terry’s urging just after she began volunteering—and they still volunteer today. Throughout its history, Berks Encore has thrived because of the support and tireless efforts of families like the Beckers. Their support and the work of others in the community ensure older adults of Berks County are provided with the highest level of support and services possible. Meals On Wheels: a family effortFEATURENEW!

Throughout Berks Encore’s 50-year history, two themes have been impor-tant to the agency’s development: fam-ily and service. The Meals on Wheels program has been a staple of Berks Encore’s offerings to the county’s older adults and their families. Families gain peace of mind knowing that their loved one is provided with a meal and a check-in each weekday, and volun-teers who help the Meals on Wheels program become part of a larger fam-ily—the Berks County community.

Today, not only is the Meals on Wheels pro-gram going strong and serving over 600 seniors each weekday, but the program is also helmed by an individual with a unique family tie to Meals on Wheels. Kaitlin Becker is currently Meals on Wheels Coordinator. Her mother, Terry Becker, was already a Berks Encore veteran—a center manager fi rst at Hamburg, later at Strausstown, and today at Fleetwood. The two women’s involvement in the agency, however, dates back nearly 20 years ago.

Terry began volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program in 1996, as she was looking for an opportunity to help her local Hamburg commu-nity. “I started when my two girls were little,” she recalls. Her youngest daughter, Emily, was still in a booster seat when she began delivering meals every other Thursday. Terry remembered the diffi culty of delivering meals with a small child in tow: “You get the kid out, you get the meals out, you trudge out and ring the doorbell—then you do it in reverse.” Over the summer, older sister Kate would also join her mother and sister in delivering meals.

But the mission

of Meals on Wheels remained a driving force in her career. “Meals on Wheels has always been job number one for me. It is a mission, I have believed that for years, and I continue to believe that,” Terry states. “It’s a family-oriented, rewarding program.”

Kate echoes that sentiment, acknowledging that, “with Meals on Wheels, you can really help peo-ple.” After college, she returned to delivering meals to assist her mother. LuAnn Oatman, President

Dear Reader,

Summer is just around the corner, and Berks Encore’s calendar is heating up! Our

50th Anniversary year is one for the record books. We hope to see you at Senior Day at the Reading Fightin Phils on July 6 and our Annual Summer Picnic on July 27. And although it may seem far away, with the summer sunshine still upon us, our Senior Expo in October and Black Tie Bingo (Optional) Bingo gala in December are already picking up steam as we look ahead to the rest of the calendar year.

For me, summer always brings to mind picnics, vacations, and, of course, family. Berks Encore is dedicated to improving the lives of the county’s older adults, but it is at its core a family agency: for families, by families. You’ll notice some familiar faces and names featured in this issue—families that have supported Berks Encore for years. I truly value these connections. I hope you’ll spend time with us this summer and enjoy the company of this large Berks Encore family.

Author Richard Bach said, “The bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life. Rarely do members of one family grow up under the same roof.” I can think of no better statement to describe our the many people that make up our Berks Encore Family. Here’s to a summer fi lled with friendly faces and fun times.

Sincerely,LuAnn Oatman,

President/CEO

Concerned About Falling? A MATTER OF BALANCE Can Help By Shirley J. Lutz , NESTA Certifi ed Personal Trainer, FITOUR Certifi ed Group Exercise Trainer

Prior to reaching the age entitled to collect Social Security Benefi ts, I had three serious falls. The fi rst led to back surgery, the second a broken leg, and the third a broken foot. The falls were accidental, and more or less beyond my control. The good news is due to my overall good health and regular exercise I healed quickly and fully.

My most recent senior fi tness training has been as a Coach for the program, A Matter of Balance, Managing Concerns About Falls. This program is based upon research conducted by the Roybal Center for Enhancement of Late-Life Function at Boston University. It is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults who have concerns about falls. The program was introduced to Berks County by Stephanie Felke, Outreach Coordinator for the Reading Hospi-tal and Martha Sitler, VP of Education for Berks Encore. Several sessions are presently being offered at a variety of locations with additional sessions to be scheduled.

Falls are a leading cause of injury and death for older adults. Up to 30 percent of adults fall each year. About 20 percent of

these falls cause physical injury. About one half to one third of falls occur around the home. Most falls occur during routine activities. Falls usually occur due to a combination of things coming together. The good news is that a great many falls are preventable! A Matter of Balance consists of eight two-hour classes. Participants learn the following:

• To view falls and the fear of falling as controllable • To set realistic goals for increasing activity • To change their environment to reduce fall risk factors • To promote exercise to increase strength and balance

Of those completing the program, 97 percent feel more comfortable talking about the fear of falling and more comfort-able increasing activity; 99 percent plan to continue exercising and 98 percent would recommend the program to others. An added bonus is the opportunity to socialize.

As you consider the benefi ts of this program and seek further information or to register for classes, please contact Martha Sitler at 610.374.3195 x224 or [email protected] .

PETS & SENIORS “Now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me,

By your side I will seek other seas.”

WWII COMBAT VETERAN REMEMBERS

A New Hymn…A new hymn of today relative for WWII found in our New

UM hymnal (1995): “Lord you have come to the lakeshore (seashore).” This great hymn was written in 1987 in Spanish. As our division sailed from New York, we had no idea what to expect from the Nazi U-Boats. We just had one submarine alert in the eleven days at sea. Our 104th Division landed on one of the invasion beaches in September, three months after D-Day.

“The Other Seas” proved to be the canals in Holland along with the Roer and Rhine Rivers in Germany. Each of these had their own role in my combat experiences in the 195 days on the front lines. The sergeant beside me was killed and later I had a dud (un-exploded) eighty-eight land in my foxhole minutes after leaving it. Then we boated across the roaring Roer River—3 a.m.—and made it safely. The Nazi troops weren’t expecting us at night. The Remagon Bridge had been captured intact and we crossed, by truck, on pontoon bridges courtesy of the combat engineers. The captured bridge collapsed shortly.

This happened in March and by the end of April, the last shot was fi red. Then on May 7 unconditional surrender of all Ger-man forces signed (1945) and May 8 V-E Day declared. These days now observed as Europe’s Memorial Days and this year being the 77th Anniversary of their liberation. Also the 77th Anniversary of our Timberwolf’s ceasefi re. No more killing or being killed.

Lord, You have come to the lakeshore looking neither for wealthy nor wise ones;

You only asked me to follow humbly.

Dean Kraras joined the Berks Encore Board of Directors in 2012. But as Charter Tour Consultant at White Star Tours and member of the Kraras family, Dean had a strong connection to and understanding of Berks Encore’s mission before his tenure on the Board began. “I

had known a lot about Berks Encore through my father [Chris Kraras], who was on the board for quite a number of years. He had always told me the organization does great things in the community and that they have a strong board and wonderful staff. He recommended to me that I join.”

Both personally and professionally, Dean has found his time on the Berks Encore Board to be tremendously benefi cial. “I feel it is important to give back to the senior market,” Dean says. Knowing, understanding, and helping the seniors of Berks County is of high interest to White Star Tours, as the company serves a large number of seniors. “I have gotten to know some great people on the board who have unique ideas and a wonder-ful vision for the future of our senior market,” he explains.

Dean’s board service has given him a better view of the services Berks Encore offers—and the tremendous demand for

those services. He states, “I continue to be amazed at how many people utilize these services and how well the staff handles the high demand for these services.” Dean is highly active on the Senior Expo committee, playing a huge role in ensuring the event goes on without a hitch.

In addition to his involvement with Berks Encore, Dean is incredibly active in other organizations. He serves on the boards of the Hawk Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America, the Van Reed Athletic Association, and Crime Alert Berks County. He is the chapter secretary for the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, and a member of the GREP Marketing Committee. This year, he is co-chairing the cocktail party for the Olivet Boys & Girls Club Golf Tourna-ment. Dean is also co-chairman of the Greek Food Bazaar at Sts. Constantine & Helen Church. Dean also volunteers as a youth coach through the Van Reed Athletic Association, and has volunteered in the past as a coach through the YMCA, S.T.A.A., and Liberty Youth Baseball.

Dean lives in Wyomissing with his wife Jen and their chil-dren, Mackenzie, Peyton, Christopher, and Delaney. He’s a huge football, basketball, and baseball fan, and enjoys attending sporting events—especially Philadelphia Eagles games.

Berks Encore’s Grocery Shopping Program is yet another great service for Berks County’s older adults: it provides those individu-als over 50 years of age who have diffi culty doing their grocery shopping a way to get their groceries. Berks

Encore volunteers try to fi nd a volunteer to do a client’s shopping and deliver an individual’s groceries to his or her home on a weekly or as-needed basis. This program is available through Berks Encore and any local Redner’s Warehouse Markets store in the county. It’s yet another way the agency can help seniors to remain independent in their homes. The program is growing, and is staffed entirely by volunteers.

There are several volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure our Grocery Shopping Program clients receive their groceries. This month we’re featuring one of them, JoAnne Lutz, who volunteers twice a week—and some-times more—to help coordinate the program. Orders are

taken on Mondays, and volunteers like JoAnne make phone calls to coordinate with available volunteers that live close to the client. JoAnne also sends the orders to each individual Redner’s store.

“I’m looking forward to using the program myself,” JoAnne explains, noting that there are many reasons that people may not be able to make it to the grocery store anymore—from not being able to drive to diffi culty reaching to diffi culty lifting items.

JoAnne, a retired secretary, began volunteering for Berks Encore in August 2014, after hearing about the Grocery Shopping Program. At that time, the program had around a dozen clients. Today, the average number of clients served each week is 30. The current pool of active volunteer shoppers numbers about 75 people. Some areas, JoAnne mentioned, desperately need vol-unteer shoppers—including the Boyertown area.

JoAnne’s extensive clerical experience (she has over 40 years’ experience!) comes in handy when creating and managing spreadsheets and interacting with clients and volunteers. JoAnne is active in her local commu-nity as well: she’s an organist and choir director at her local church, and she leads the Muhlenberg Community Chorus, in addition to other activities. Berks Encore is grateful for the amazing work JoAnne and other vol-unteers do to ensure clients can receive groceries each week.

The Grocery Shopping Program is taking new clients. Additionally, the program is always looking for volun-teers to help shop for individuals in their local commu-nity. For more information, call 610-374-3195 or go to http://berksencore.org/services/referrals/grocery-shop-ping-program/.

Put Your Best Foot ForwardMartha A. Sitler, Vice President of Education

Many adults get frequent checkups, exercise regularly and, in general, try to take good care of themselves, but they neglect caring for their feet. In one study 71% of respondents age 65 or older reported foot pain or problems. Foot injury, disease and neglect are major factors contributing to mobility issues in older adults.

Senior adults tend to experience more problems with their feet than younger people do simply because they have used them longer. Women are four times more likely than men to have foot problems, probably because of years of poor shoe choices, including high heels. Other conditions such as diabe-tes and poor circulation can also affect foot health. Neglecting our feet can result in problems with coordination, balance and gait, all of which increase the risk of falling and a diminished quality of life.

Like other parts of the body, however, good care and mainte-nance can go far in promoting health and ensuring that we can remain mobile and independent as we age.

• Footwear - Make sure that the shoes you wear are the proper size and don’t cramp your toes. Good footwear should provide cushioning for the ball of the foot and support for the posterior tibial tendon (the arch). Heels should be 1” or lower. Flip-fl ops may be OK around the pool, but wearing them forces the toes to overgrip, and they off er no arch support or protection from bumps and bruises.

• Examine and Pamper - Clean and check your feet regularly for any changes or irregularities. Use lotion or cream after bathing to prevent skin from drying, cracking and itching. You can also use a pumice stone to remove excess skin cells, but use it in ONE direction, not back and forth which splits the skin and causes it to grow back rough and scaly. Keep toenails trimmed straight across, not curved, and slightly longer than the tips of the toes. Be sure to keep feet warm and dry; use an antiperspirant if your feet sweat a lot.

• Nutrition - Each foot has 26 bones and 35 joints, so keep them strong by eating a diet rich in calcium and Vitamin D as well as nutrients from fruits and vegetables that reduce infl ammation in the 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments that keep each foot functioning.

• Exercise - Maintain a healthy weight, because each extra pound can increase the pressure on hips, knees and feet by EIGHT pounds. Be sure to wear proper shoes for walking and exercise. Crossing your legs or sitting too long in one position can pinch the peroneal nerve, causing the feeling of numbness or “pins and needles” in your foot. Try to elevate your feet when you are sitting.

• See Your Doctor or Podiatrist - If you notice and changes such as ulcers, sores, cuts, or cracking, talk with your doctor. If you have diabetes, make sure that a thorough foot exam is part of every doctor visit; more than half of all lower limb amputa-tions occur in adults with diabetes. Thick or discolored toenails or peeling or red skin can be signs of a fungal infection. Other common foot problems include bunions, hammertoes, Morton’s neuroma (caused by compression and infl ammation of the nerve between the bones of the third and fourth toes resulting in pain in the ball of the foot and toes that tingle or go numb) and Plantar fasciitis which causes heel pain. Talk with your physician or podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis and plan of treatment.

By the age of 50, most people have walked over 75,000 miles- about three times around the Earth. So if you’re not ready to stay in one place , be sure to put your best foot forward by giving both of them the care they need.

Be Safe in Severe WeatherBy Kristin Danley-Greiner

With severe weather season upon us in the U.S., older adults may be among the most vulnerable victims when disasters strike. That’s why

Home Instead Senior Care, the international caregiving com-pany with more than 800 locations in 15 countries, has issued a disaster safety preparation checklist to help prepare seniors for the possibility of natural disasters.

HOME INSTEAD SENIOR CARE’S DISASTER PREP CHECKLIST FOR SENIORS:

• TUNE IN. Contact the local emergency management offi ce to learn about the most likely natural disasters to strike your area. Stay abreast of what’s going on through your local radio or television.

• TAKE STOCK. Decide what your senior can or can’t do in the event of a natural disaster. Make a list of what would be needed if a disaster occurred. For example, if your loved one is wheelchair-bound, determine an evacuation strategy ahead of time. Prepare for whatever disaster could hit the area.

• TO GO OR TO STAY? When deciding to evacuate, older adults should go sooner rather than later. By waiting too long, they may be unable to leave if they require assistance.

• MAKE A PLAN. Schedule a family meeting to develop a plan of action. Include in your plan key people – such as neighbors, friends, relatives and professional

caregivers – who could help.

• MORE THAN ONE WAY OUT. Seniors should develop at least two escape routes: one to evacuate their home and one to evacuate their community. The local emergency management offi ce can tell you escape routes out of the community.

• MEET UP. Designate a place to meet relatives or key support network people outside the house, as well as a second location outside the neighborhood, such as a school or church. Practice the plan twice a year.

• GET UP AND “GO KIT.” Have an easy-to-carry backpack including three days non-perishable food and water with an additional four days of food and water readily accessible at home. Have at least one gallon of bottled water per person per day. Refresh and replace your supplies at least twice a year. And don’t forget the blanket and paper products such as toilet paper.

• PACK EXTRAS AND COPIES. Have at least a one-month supply of medication on hand at all times. Make ready other important documents in a waterproof protector including copies of prescriptions, car title registration and driver’s license, insurance documents and bank account numbers, and spare checkbook. Also take extra eyeglasses and hearing-aid batteries. Label every piece of important equip-ment or personal item in case they are lost.

• YOUR CONTACT LIST. Compile a contact list and include people on a senior’s support network as well as doctors and other important health-care professionals.

• IF YOU CAN’T BE THERE. If you’re not living close by to help your loved one, enlist the help of family or friends, or contact a professional caregiving company.

Savings for SeniorsBy State Rep. Mark Rozzi

Finances are tight and many Pennsylvanians are seeking ways to make their dollar go further. While many restaurants and re-tail shops offer discounts to seniors, I’d like to remind you that the commonwealth also provides many discounts and savings programs to older Pennsylvanians.

For those who enjoy hunting and fi shing, the state Fish and Boat and state Game commissions offer discounted licensing fees. Yearly hunting licenses will run just $13.70 and a yearly fi shing license will cost $11.70. A lifetime hunting or fi shing license is also available for $51.70. You can fi nd more informa-tion on how to purchase a fi shing license online, the latest stocking guides, fi shing information by your region and much more, by visiting the Fish and Boat Commission website at www.fi sh.state.pa.us. Game news, state game land maps, and other helpful resources are also available on the Pennsylvania Came Commis-sion website, www.pgc.state.pa.us.

If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with the grandkids, look no further! Pennsylvania’s 117 state parks offer some of the best camping and recreation in the country. Seniors are eligible for a $4.50 discount off the normal daily campsite rate. You can fi nd your closest state park, prices, and other frequently asked questions, as well as make a reservation, at www.dcnr.state.pa.us. Reservations also can be made by calling 1-888-PA-PARKS.

State law requires all dogs over three months to be licensed. Berks County offers seniors a reduced license fee of $6.45 for a male or female dog, or $4.45 for a neutered male or spayed female. Seniors may also purchase a lifetime license fee for reduced rate of $31.45 for a male or female, or $21.45 for a neutered male or spayed female. An annual dog license applica-tion form and listing of locations to purchase a dog license is available on the Berks County website at www.co.berks.pa.us, search: dog licenses.

The state Transportation Department offers retired Pennsyl-

vanians earning less than $19,200 annually a reduced auto-mobile registration rate of $10, compared to the normal $36. Seniors older than 65 may also purchase a two-year license renewal for $19. For motorcycles, a two-year license renewal is $29. You can fi nd more information and renew your registration and license online at www.dot.state.pa.us or write Pa. Bureau of Motor Vehicles, 1101 S. Front St., P.O. Box 68269, Harris-burg, PA 17106 or call 1-800-932-4600.

Don’t feel like driving? Seniors ride for free on the Berks Area Reading Transportation Authority fi xed-route service lines. To participate in the program, you must register with BARTA to obtain a Com-monwealth of Pennsylvania ID Card. A valid ID card can be obtained at the BARTA Spe-cial Services offi ce, 1700 N. 11th St., Read-ing or the BARTA Transportation Center, Eighth and Cherry streets, Reading.

If you have questions about these state discount programs and services, please do not hesitate to contact my offi ce. Additionally, most of the forms for the programs men-tioned above are available at my offi ce for your convenience. My staff and I are happy to help you navigate through any issues with state government.

Growing Senior Population Deserves ConsiderationBy: Senator David G. Argall (R-Schuylkill/Berks)

Pennsylvania is fortunate to benefi t from the wisdom and experience of many older state residents, as we boast one of the largest senior populations of any state in the nation. However, that distinction also brings certain challenges that must be ad-dressed in order to promote the well-being of seniors.

According to US Census data, Pennsylvania is home to nearly 2.8 million residents age 60 or older. As early as this year, the number of state residents in this age bracket could exceed 25 percent, or about 1 in 4 state residents. As this percentage continues to climb, so too does the demand for services for older residents. Meeting this demand will be one of the most impor-tant budgetary challenges in the next several years.

The PACE and PACENET prescription assistance programs are one of the keystones of Pennsylvania’s strategy to protect the health and fi nancial well-being of seniors. The programs offer low-cost prescription medicines to qualifi ed state residents age 65 and older. Last year, I joined members of the General Assembly in making changes to expand PACE coverage to an additional 8,200 state residents and ensure another 29,000 were protected against losing coverage due to Social Security cost-of-living adjustments. Assistance with PACE and PACENET is available by contacting Berks Encore.

Health care is another vital component of the state’s efforts to improve the quality of life for seniors. Recent changes to Medi-care and health care options under Obamacare have created a great deal of confusion for many state residents. The state offers a free health insurance counseling program specifi cally designed to help seniors with Medicare and long-term care insurance. The APPRISE helpline is available by calling 1-800-783-7067; or contact Berks Encore to speak with an APPRISE counselor.

In addition, one of the highest priorities for many seniors is the ability to retain their independence and remain in their homes. The Living Independence for the Elderly (LIFE) program helps to meet that goal by providing services and sup-ports to suit their needs. The LIFE program is a managed care program that provides a comprehensive, all-inclusive package of medical and support services to participants who are over the age of 55 and eligible for Medical Assistance. More information about the program is available by calling the Long-Term Living Helpline at 1-800-753-8827.

Today’s seniors helped build and fortify the foundation of our Commonwealth through their hard work and ingenuity. We owe it to them to fi nd ways to meet the budgetary challenges of a growing senior population and ensure they can continue to live healthy and vibrant lives well into their golden years.

Kristin’s mother-in-law was struggling with daily tasks, but refused her family’s suggestions to get help. And Kristin’s husband wasn’t facing the problem, either. So Kristin came to us for advice. We helped her see that a little short-term stress

would be a long-term gain for everyone. Kristin showed her husband and his mother the many care options we offer to our residents, and they agreed to a solution. Now, everyone feels safer and more comfortable. And no love was lost.

From independent living to specialized memory care, we have a range of advice and solutions to help your family—all on a vibrant campus with activities, social events and individualized services.

GAS UTILITIES SENIORSJuly the 4th: Independence Day!Flags Fly – Fireworks – Picnic and Displays of patriotism – a

fun day for everyone! We celebrate – each of us chooses how—that says is all—free to act as individuals. We are so fortunate to live in the U.S.A.—with all of its faults—it is the best place on the face of the earth. May God bless us all.

At our April meeting, we tapped feet and sang with a lively group: “Sonny and the S.O.S. Gang.”

On Tuesday, July 21, we gather at the Shrine Complex for our annual picnic—always a fun-feast!

There is no August meeting. September meeting will feature Sterling with his Accordian.

TRIPSWednesday July 15 - Resorts Casino at Atlantic CityThursday August 6 - “Twist and Shout” at Hunterdon Playhouse Wednesday September 9 - “Over the River and Through the Woods” at the

Rainbow TheatreThursday September 24 - “Live at the Sands” at Penn’s Peak—it’s a tribute to

the Rat Pack

Phone June Kunkelman, 610-921-0577, with any questions about trips.

OPEN MEMBERSHIP: Meetings at 1 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month. Exceptions are July picnic, August and the Christmas Party. We meet at St. John’s Reformed Church, located at 4001 Penn Ave, Sinking Spring.

Any general questions? Phone Jackie at 610-921-0577

TUCKERTON NIFTY-FIFTY CLUBOur business meeting starts at 11:15 a.m. on the second Mon-

day of the month at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The April 13 meal was our pot luck luncheon. Everyone

brought an item as admission to a great lunch. As usual it was delicious.

Alan Wenrich, Chairman of the pot luck luncheon, did a good job getting it organized in a shorter time frame than usual. He had to work quickly, because we had no meetings in January and February due to ice and snow.

Barry Surran sang familiar songs for our entertainment. We enjoyed the program.

Our bus trips started on April 28. The fi rst trip was to the American Music Theatre. The program was music to inspire you. It featured beautiful inspirational songs. We ate at the Golden Corral.

Marilyn Daniels, Trip Coordinator, has room on the buses for two trips at this point in time. They are to the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre on June 25 for “Oklahoma” and the Mystery Trip on September 9. The cost to see “Oklahoma” is $62 and the Mystery Trip costs $70.

Call Marilyn Daniels at 610-929-5465 to come with us. Her trips are well-organized and fun.

Leah Eckenroth, Secretary/Publicity

At the March meeting of the Golden Seniors of Spies Church, members arrived carrying bags of Easter candy. The candy would later be used to fi ll two styles of Easter Baskets members would construct for patients at the Lebanon VA Hospital. Directions were given by member Anna Wingert and the members went to work tracing, cutting, gluing and decorat-ing bunnies and baskets. The baskets were fi lled with the candy donated by members and then wrapped in clear plastic and tied with ribbon. Six members traveled to the VA hospital on April 2nd to deliver the 70 baskets. The volunteer service workers told us they don’t ever remember receiving Easter Baskets for the patients before. It made our members very happy that they

BLANDONHappy Father’s Day to ALL FATHERS!

Thursday, April 2 - 41 Seniors boarded the Elite Coach with Andy, our driver, as we headed for the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre to see the show “Funny Girl,” but our fi rst stop was at Edwards Nuts and Candy Co., for some of those delicious nuts and sweets! Then, it was on to the Dutch Apple! Everyone had a good meal and all enjoyed the great show!

April 8 meeting - Shirley Frazer, Attendance Chairperson reported: We had one guest today: David Gehret! We are defi nitely going on the BIG TRIP across Tennessee, Asheville, North Carolina, Pigeon Forge & Nashville! We still have openings if anyone is still interested. Attendance was 62 plus one guest! Refreshments were provided by the following: Jack Holubec, Howard & Arlene Ruhf, Betty Reber, fi lling in for Arlene Ruhf and Bernie Essig! Entertainment was provided by LeRoy Fegley. From his early childhood and up to the present day, he is a fan of Hopalong Cassidy. LeRoy told us the entire story of William Boyd, who played the character up until his death-- a very interesting story of some unknown facts! Thank You, LeRoy!

April 22 meeting - Cards were sent out to the following: Get Well to Arlene Ruhf, Paul & Dorothy Weller; Birthday to Emily Cramer for her 95th and Bertha Gechter, 96th; Thinking of You to Richard & Melva Wise. Today’s attendance was 57! Refreshments were provided by the following: Shirley/Neal Berger, Dolores/Herb Dorney & Sylvia/Glenn Knouse! Thanks Guys for those huge apple fritters! The program was presented by the Miller Brothers + 1 from the Virginville area. All fi ve brothers grew up on a farm and there was one sister. Brothers Lester,

the oldest, Brother Richard, Neil Merkel (the +1, fi lling in for Brother Russell, who was ill and not able to be present for this program), Brother Robert and Brother Bill! The Brothers entertained us with fi ve beautiful voices singing in Pa. Dutch and English! Told some very good jokes and also put on two little acts, from what they learned back in their good old school days! Thank You, Miller Brothers, plus Neil, for a most enjoyable program!

REMINDER: Our Club meets on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of the month, at the Maidencreek Church, along Route 73, on Main Street. If you are 55 years of age, or older, with a yearly dues of $5.00 a year, you are more than “welcome” to join us, for a visit, or to join our Club. Hope to see you there!!!

PARISH-DANA RETIREESSummer is on its way — any day now. Shorts. Flip-fl ops. Tank

tops. I can hardly wait. With that in mind, you defi nitely want to attend our fi nal luncheon meeting (until September) on Thursday, June 4. All Parish-Dana retirees and former employ-ees (management and union) are encouraged to attend. Where? At Wegman’s Family Restaurant, 4401 Pottsville Pike (Route 61) in Reading. The private meeting/dining area is located on the lower level. Please use the rear entrance. Ample parking is provided.

Social gatherings commence at 11 a.m. — or earlier, if you are anxious — and conclude at approximately 1:30 p.m. The hot meal is served buffet-style precisely at noon. June’s sumptuous fare will include: pork chops slathered in gravy, freedom fries, succulent red beets, salad with bacon dressing, rolls/butter. M-m-m m-m-m. Dessert will be...you know.

Our speaker will be Kathy Grim from Blue Marsh. Her presentation is entitled, “Tulpehocken — Land of the Turtle.” Everyone will receive a small turtle. Not! (This isn’t Oprah Winfrey.) However, a prize will be awarded for the best feath-ered headdress.

REMINDER: Time is running out. If you haven’t purchased your ticket for the annual picnic (Thursday, June 25), please do so post haste. They are selling like hotcakes—or scrap metal from the Parish stor-age yard. This year the picnic will be held at Maier’s Grove in Blandon. It is located on Grove Road, no less. Directions are printed on the tickets. Look for signs—and black and white balloons. You›ll love it there. (I’ll bring the horseshoes.)

Questions/suggestions may be directed to Larry Jambeau: [email protected].

An investigational medicine is being tested that could improve your symptoms in a similar way to an already approved medication.

You may qualify for the study if you are at least age 18, have rheumatoid arthritis, and are still experiencing symptoms after multiple treatments. There will be no cost to you to participate, and reasonable travel costs may be reimbursed.
