Force Measurement

Making your processes measure up

2

At the heart ofABB technology is the

understanding that flatness, tension, pressure, torque,

position and dimension can be sensed accurately, reliably

and repeatedly on a continuous basis. The data generated

by such sensing devices can then be used to control

external equipment in such a way that process parameters

are kept constant. And as a result, operators can increase

productivity and achieve higher levels of consistency in

product quality. Our products not only measure the forces

within a process, they help make sure that production

measures up to expectations.

Using state-of-the-art technology, ABB provides purpose

built solutions for your force and dimension measurement

needs. Making it possible for your production output to

accurately match the most varying and demanding

requirements.

We are helping thousands of clients all over theworld to boost their productivity and yield

Challenge the hiddenpotential within your application.

Pressductor® TechnologyABB’s well-known Pressductor®

Technology is a measurement principlebased on the magnetoelastic effect –the magnetic properties of a metal areinfluenced by the mechanical forceapplied to it. Because the signals pro-duced are not reliant upon physicalmovement or deformation, the loadcells combine sensitivity with extraor-dinary tolerance to overloads and vir-tually no built-in limit to the numberof load cycles.

ABB’sPressductor®

transducerstands for unbeatable loadcell performance, thanks toits unique combination ofaccuracy, overload capacityand ability to withstand harshenvironments. By using this technologyyou will achieve higher quality and reli-ability, especially under demandingconditions.

Pulsed Eddy Current TechnologyABB has developed a completely newway of performing measurements witheddy current technology. It is amethod that makes it possible to meas-ure, in real time and in line, dimen-sions and other attributes with excep-tional accuracy.

The new ABB technology is basedon measurements of the voltage pulseinduced in the coil when the current is

suddenly interrupted. By measuringthis value at three different times threeparameters can be derived; the dis-tance, the electrical resistivity and thethickness.

Since this is a non-contact technolo-gy it eliminates the drawbacks of com-mon systems based on X-ray, isotopecontact measurement.

This system will not only make yourmill more competitive today, it willalso provide you with tools and meth-ods to ensure that you keep in front ofyour competition in the future.

Using JAVA technology gives you anon-proprietary platform-independentway of expanding the system function-ality and the CPU power when yourneeds are growing. Your rolling knowl-edge and experience can be storedanywhere on the network and the sys-

tem will make full use of it. In doingso the Stressometer system will bringyou economical benefits to a as yetunsurpassed extent:• Improved yield out of each coil• Improved strip quality• Shorter production cycles• Reduction of number of strip breaks• Reduction of cost for process devel-

opment• Reduction of cost for maintenance

Flatness Measurement& Control. Based upon our experience

from more than 500 installations of flatness

measurements and flatness control systems worldwide we

continuously develop new generations of the market

leading flatness system – the Stressometer® System.

A non-contact, non-opticalmeasurement system. The Millmate

Strip Scanner System determines the edge position of a

metal strip in a rolling mill down to millimeter resolution.

High, consistent quality is always theaim when producing steel, aluminiumor copper strip. This is equally true inrolling mills and process lines.

Modern rolling mills often use avariety of measurement and controlfacilities. One of the most importantparameters is the position of the strip. If this is not correctly measured, there

is a great risk of rolling the stripunder incorrect presumptions. Thisleads to poor flatness, especially atthe edges, and to a final product ofinferior quality or even strip break-age. In addition to this, the stripwidth must be kept within the speci-fied tolerances – essential for goodeconomy of production.

Millmate Thickness Gauging Systems

Lab accuracy in the millThe Millmate Thickness Gauging Systems (MTG), utilizing

the Pulsed Eddy Current Technology, open up a new

dimension in metal strip gauging with superior features:

• Contact-free and yet material independent gauging fornon-ferrous metals

• Robust and completely insensitive for conditions in themeasuring gap, such as oil, water, coolants, steam, etc.

• Accuracy to a level of 0.1%• Poses none of the risks associated with X-ray or isotop gauges• Measures as accurately in production as in the laboratory

Our Millmate Roll ForceSystem has long set the industry standard for

measurement of rapid changes in roll separation forces in

hot and cold rolling mills.

Rock-solid load cellsThe Millmate Roll Force load cells act asintegral parts of the mill stand. Therock-solid Pressductor load cell designin combination with the intelligent, reli-able communication functions are cru-cial keys to true roll force measurement.

The Millmate Roll Force Systemconsists of a Millmate Controller andtwo load cells with matching units. The various types and the wide rangeof Millmate Roll Force load cells coverpractically all conceivable roll forcemeasurement applications.

The ABB equipment is easy to installand operate. We offer installation sup-port as well as long-term after sales sup-ply and support. Due to ABB’s extensiveexperience in the rolling mill industry,we can offer outstanding applicationknow-how in this particular field.

ABB provides tension measurement systems whose standard design and

custom configurations address the requirements of every conceivable industry

application and environment. Rapid, accurate and continuous tension

measurement are essential to keep tension constant in every process.

ABB has the perfect measurement solution forpractically every process line

Total solutionIn order to achieve true accurate meas-urement also in very severe conditions,it is not enough to buy only high-qual-ity products. The surroundings and thetotal installation, too, have to bedesigned in a correct way.

With ABB’s extensive experienceand a large installed base we can sup-port installation proposals for yourspecific needs and mill geometry. Wealso offer total solutions includingmechanical accessories, such as bear-ing housings, adapter plates, etc., forPillowBlock load cells.

Bringing quality andreliability to the measurement of web tension.

Changing process requirementsToday, web machinery is beingequipped with more process automa-tion than ever before, including closed-loop controls and recipe management.A wider range of materials must beprocessed at higher operating speeds –without sacrificing product quality orrisking downtime.

In most machinery applications, ithas now become a fundamentalrequirement for successful operationsto know what the web tension actuallyis at various points of the processingline. Particulary in paper machinery, where we have a very large installedbase of PillowBlock Load Cells.

The result is that the quality of ten-sion measurement is showing up morequickly than before in both the prod-uct being processed and the operatingefficiency of the line.

Quality tension measurementIn converting operations or on plasticfilm lines, on web printing presses ortextile finishing machinery, recalibrat-ing and replacing load cells that driftor malfunction can be a major preoc-cupation for maintenance departments.

ABB’s load cells, based on thePressductor® Technology, turn this situ-ation around. Rugged enough to standup to real world production environ-ments, these high quality load cellsdeliver all the benefits of reliable webtension measurement. They also allowenough latitude in measurement rangeto handle a wide variety of applica-tions, and have proven their superiorperformance in heavy duty applica-tions in paper and metal industries formore than 40 years.

ABB’s Diesel EnginePerformance MonitoringSystem is the most advanced system for continuous

engine performance monitoring.

Knowledge is the key to success...ABB’s intelligent engine monitoringsystem, a strong tool for condition-based maintenance, raises the qualityof performance data and analysis to acompletely new level.• Increased operational safety• Better maintenance planning• Ease of technical reporting• Longer life of components• Early detection of faults• Higher fuel efficiency

...now and in the futureABB believes that knowledge willbecome ever more important. Therefore the Cylmate® System isdesigned to provide the informationrequired by closed-loop engine controlsystems of the future.

We can take the pressure – continuouslyA unique combination of measurements of cylinder pres-sure, crankshaft position and advanced mathematical mod-elling of the engine provides very accurate, real-time datafor monitoring and diagnostic analysis. The quality of thedata ensures very significant benefits from improved relia-bility and reduction of operating costs and increased safety.
