Measurement of coatings on sheet metal.

Varieties of specialized coatings are deposited in the sheet metal production.

Some of the most common are anti-rust, anti-finger and oil coating. Traditionally, the thickness of these coating is being measured using IR absorption. This method has two serious limitations: sensitivity to the thin films (<2 μm) is low and substrate color variation can affect the measurement results. MProbe system is free from above limitation and can easily measure thickness in these applications Example 1. Measurement of anti-rust coating thickness on zinc-dipped steel sheet. Measurements were done using MProbe VisHR system in 700-1000nm range.

Example 2. Measurement of the anti-finger film on stainless steel. The measurements were taken using MProbe Vis system (400nm -1000nm wavelength range)

Fig. 3 Reflectance spectra of two samples. Reflectance spectra are offset due to a different reflectivity of the substrate. However, the film thickness are almost the same (1.943 μm and 1.945 μm). Using IR absorption will yield significantly different results…
