Samhain, the ancientCeltic Festival that wenow call “Halloween”,

originated in Co. Meathmore than 2,000 yearsago. Samhain marksthe end o the oldCeltic Year and thebeginning o the NewYear. The Celts believedthat this was a timeo transition, and the

rits o all who had died since the last Night o Samhainoved on to the next lie.

ne o the main spiritual centres o the ancient Celts wasated on top o the hill o Tlachtga, now called the HillWard, one mile east o Athboy, Co. Meath.was here on the estival o Samhain that the sacred freas kindled. The lighting o the sacred fre was a solemnd weird ritual. Torches were lit and carried to seven other s around the county including Tara and Loughcrew, and

en on to light up the whole countryside.
