gEt OFF tRACkIn snow-free seasons, where a developed trail exists, you should follow it. This confines the impact on vegetation and soil to a narrow band. But in winter, when the earth is buffered by a blanket of snow, the emphasis shifts from not disrupting the terrain to not disrupting your fellow travellers. A snowshoer’s oversized footprints wreck a skier’s parallel grooves. A boot packer’s post holing creates a series of tip-snaring traps for skis and snowshoes. So like should follow like: skiers should follow ski tracks, snowshoers should follow snowshoe tracks, and so on. Overlap the trails of other user types only where terrain features or safe routing requires it. Otherwise, where no track of your self-propelled peer exists, make one. And revel in the chance to be a trail blazer.
