Snapshot of the Department
The Mechanical Engineering major offers maximum flexibility• Required courses are offered both fall and spring, and many
in summer and winter as well. • Six senior electives from 6 career paths and from other depts.
• participate in competitions:• Terps Racing• Solar Decathlon• Small Energy Appliances
• join special programs (eg. QUEST, EWB, Hinman, GEMTONE
This flexibility makes it easier to:• study abroad• pursue internships or co-op• participate in academic research projects• have a minor or a double major• lead a student organization

UG Teams and Competitions
Team UMD Dryer is the 2013 winner of the Department of Energy’s Max Tech and Beyond, low energy appliance competition. UMD mechanical engineering students, and their advisor Dr. YunHo Hwang, have won this national contest for 2 consecutive years. Last year’s winning project was an ultra low energy air conditioner. This competition is funded by DOE and managed by the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab.
