IntroductionSituation:

People often find mechanical devices amusing. Automata are mechanical devices that perform movements automatically. They go through a routine designed to be amusing. There is a growing market for ‘Automata’ as toys.

Client? MR BLOGGS

Task

I am required to design and manufacture a prototype ‘automata’ with two attractive moving parts. The automata will be for a client of your own choice.

Unit Question: How can motion be used in a mechanical toy?

AOI

Human Ingenuity

I chose Human Ingenuity because I will be making a mechanical toy. When we’re building this toy, we will need

creativity on how we construct things and make things work. I think human

ingenuity is all about creativity and how human work/process.

Page 6: Mechanical Toy Stages

Linear MotionLinear motion is a motion that goes in a straight line.

Linear motion is the most basic motion.

Page 7: Mechanical Toy Stages

Rotary MotionRotary Motion is motion that turns round in a circle. Rotary

motion spins around. The examples of rotary motion could be a turning wheel and a ferris wheel.

Cost $6.40 $11.29 $12.30

CustomerKids, because the

would just push and pull the toy and the

ducks move

Kids, It would most likely entertain kids on how the

worm moves.

Kids, because they will be most entertained by how the fish went to the cats

mouse after the toy is wind up.

EnvironmentThis would probably

made out of plastic so it would destroy the

environment because it is hard to be decomposed.

The material was made out of plywood, that is easy to grow. It will be cheap

and since it grows fast it will be more friendly to nature. But then the paint

would be acid so the won’t be good for the environment.

It was made out of plywood, so it would be

safer to the nature. The fish tank will be bad because it

is made out of plastic.

SafetyIt is very safe, because the ducks will roll smoothly,

perfect for children

any sharp edges

Source 3 would also be safe if the box doesn’t have any sharp edges

Size The size will have to be big for children to pull.

SpecificationTitle Specification and Why Testing

AestheticsThe product will look have to look good and neat so they could attract

people to buy the product

What does the product look like? Why does the product look like

this?

CostThe cost would be less than $4 because the

machine is already there in the DT Lab. The wood we use will be wood that is recycled. The

money will be on;y for the electricity bill we used to make the product

How does the product cost? Why does the product cost this much?

CustomerThe customer would be

people that is amused by my toy.

Who is the customer? Why does the product appeal to

them?

EnvironmentThe material was made out of plywood, that is easy to grow. It will be cheap and since it grows fast it

will be more friendly to nature. But the paint would be bad if we use an oil paint/solvent-based paint.

They could cause an hazardous emissions that would affect the atmosphere.

How does the product affect the environment when in use and

how?

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 13: Mechanical Toy Stages

SafetyI will not make the product

unsafe. I could prevent it by not having any sharp edges and a non-

toxic finish in my product.

Does the product have any safety risks?

How can these risks be eliminated?

SizeThe size of the product will probably be around

200mm*100mm.How big is the product and why?

Can the size be changed?

FunctionTo entertain my client wit the two different series of

movements.

What is the main functions of the product?

Can it perform any other functions?

MaterialThe material I will be using

is plywood because it’s strong and cheap

What material is the product made from?

Why is it made from this material?

ManufactureThe product will be manufactured in the DT lab because he DT lab had so many machines that we

could use.

How was the product manufactured?

Is this the most effective method?

Evaluation of The PlanI think the planning I made was detailed

enough , so that people could just follow my plan when they are making another

mechanical toy. I think my plan is helpful, especially for the gantt chart because it tells the specific time I will be using for each of the manufacturing I do. The step by step would also help to know what we will be

doing in a simpler way.

Page 26: Mechanical Toy Stages

On the Design stage, I made a design of a horse riding mechanical toy. On this design stage, I will be making

a documented evidence of how I am going to manufacture this mechanical toy. I will be following the step-by-step plan and the gantt chart so that I

don’t waste much time on doing something.

The design I made:Horse riding

Page 27: Mechanical Toy Stages

Week 1

I chose 2 PAIRS of plywood. 1 pair of plywood will need to

be the same size.

1 pair

Page 28: Mechanical Toy Stages

We SMOOTH each of the wood

with the sand paper/ SANDER

I am a SanderI am a Sander

We TAPE the wood together. We will be using these pile of wood to make the MACHINERY BOX of

the mechanical toy.

I draw the BODY of the horse...

Then the HEAD of the horse...

IN ANOTHER PIECE OF WOOD...

After that, the LEGS of the horse...

Week 2continuing to draw IN ANOTHER PIECE OF WOOD...

I draw the BODY & HEAD of the horse

rider...

Last but not least, the LEGS & HANDS of

the horse rider...

I cut each of the pieces with the fret saw. I NEED to where the glasses while cutting it with the fret

saw for SAFETY.

I am a fret saw

I am a blower

The BLOWER will help me GET RID of the dust that is

covering the LINE that I should cut.

Page 32: Mechanical Toy Stages

Week 3Mechanism time !

I chose three blocks. Two with the same size, and one with a

longer side.

Then I smooth those three pieces of wood...

I used the sanderMonday, March 2, 2011

Page 33: Mechanical Toy Stages

I drill the hole on to the pieces of wood.

I am a Drill

Addition (+):There are three kinds of drill in the DT LAB (Small,

Medium, Large) . You would want to drill the two same sized wood with the MEDIUM SIZED drill.

And the longer sized block with the BIG SIZED drill.

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 34: Mechanical Toy Stages

It will end up like this...

two holes of the medium sizedOne hole of the large sized

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 35: Mechanical Toy Stages

Pick three sticks. One short, and two longer with the same size...

Hit the stick with a hammer onto the blocks

I am a hammer

I am a HAMMER.

My job is to place the sticks in the

wood.

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 36: Mechanical Toy Stages

But the other stick was too small to put in the block. So, Mr. Julian told me I could use the GLUE. This will make it stick in

the block.

I am a GLUE and I will glue this

stick together to the block.

I am a GLUE and I will glue this

stick together to the block.

Mr. Julian said that it will be strong in 24 hours. So I let it dry...

Page 37: Mechanical Toy Stages

Week 4 I drilled a large sized drill onto the wood that is for the mechanical

box.I drilled it in the centre

For the horse, I started drilling a small sized hole

through the bottom

and another small sized hole through

the mechanism

It will end up like this...

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 39: Mechanical Toy Stages

Working on the horse !Firstly, I drilled a hole through under the head of the horse, and the upper end of the horse’

body.

Then, I sticked a thin strip of wood between the head and body of the horse. This will become the neck of the

horse.Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 40: Mechanical Toy Stages

Firstly, I drilled a hole through under the person and on top of the horse’s body. With a Small sized drill.

Then I painted the person white

Also, I place another thin strip of wood

between the person and the horse. And the horse black

Monday, March 2, 2011

Page 41: Mechanical Toy Stages

I also painted the wood for the mechanism box

I painted it brown because it’s the color of wood.

I leave all the painted wood dry, for next week!

Week 5I start putting things together

Nail up the feet of the guy together

and also sticking the hand of the guy with the

glue gun.

Same thing with the horse. I paint it black

Nail those feet into the horse

Page 49: Mechanical Toy Stages

InvestigationThe  Investigation  was  the  longest  part  of  this  process  since  we  need  to  do  the  AOI,  the  Case  Study,  Design  Speci=ication,  etc.    I  think  the  hardest  part  on  this  stage  is  to  make  the  case  study  because  I  will  have  to  criticize  three  designs.  I  think  I  already  improved  much  from  last  year  and  doesn’t  need  further  improvements.

DesignFor  this  stage,  I  think  this  stage  was  the  hardest  stage  in  the  design  cycle.  I  would  need  to  brainstorm  creative  ideas  and  choose  one  among  6.  But  the  hardest  I  found  most,  was  the  designing  in  which  I  had  used  google  sketch  up.  I  think  I  would  need  further  improvements  at  google  sketch  up,  so  I  wouldn’t  be  wasting  much  time  on  it.

PlanThe  plan  stage  is  the  3rd  stage  in  the  design  cycle  and  is  the  easiest  since  I  only  need  to  do  my  Gantt  chart  and  the  evaluation  towards  my  step-‐by-‐step  plan.  This  stage  is  an  important  stage  because  all  we  need  to  do  is  follow  the  Gantt  chart.  The  Gantt  chart  also  tells  us  how  much  time  should  we  waste  for  doing  a  job  so  that  we  won’t  waste  time  focusing  in  one  job.  I  think  I  wouldn’t  need  any  improvement  for  this  stage.

CreateThe  create  stage  was  the  2nd  hardest  stage  but  it  wasn’t  also  that  hard  because  it  was  the  funnest  stage  of  all.  In  this  stage,  we  had  made  our  =inal  product  of  mechanical  toy.  Although,  this  stage  was  a  really  long  process.  So,  we  would  need  the  documented  evidence  about  our  long  process  of  manufacturing.  Since  it  was  a  long  process,  I  would  also  need  to  improve  on  saving  time.  I  had  also  learned  a  lot  of  new  machines  that  could  be  used  to  manufacture  in  the  DT  lab.

EvaluationI  think  this  re=lection  process  is  kind  of  long,  and  the  most  boring  stage  in  the  design  cycle.  While  evaluating,  we  have  to  tell  everything  that  we  had  done  in  the  design  cycle  and  I  think  this  re=lection  is  really  useful  to  re=lect  ourself  through  the  project.
